Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

I'm just glad this year's Four Nations tournament takes place during a "break" in WCHA play; the only scheduled games are BSU @ OSU. Was this planned by the league?

As I recall, we struggled a little last year when our national team players left for the week. Not that it mattered in the end! :)

It's been fairly common the past several years for teams, particularly in the WCHA, to take the week off when the 4 Nations Cup is happening. The issue is whether or not the players have to leave early to join their national team. The Gophers had the weekend of November 7-9 off last year (the tournament was Tuesday-Saturday, Nov. 4-8), but several players missed the game on Saturday, November 1.

A 1-0 loss to Bemidji.

Thanks to the USCHO writer (whoever that is) for the nice piece on Amanda Leveille. She's establishing a pretty good body of work here at the U of M! That 2014 Frozen Four seems to have damaged her reputation a little. But in my eyes she has shown herself to be a very valuable part of the Gopher team and a good goaltender.

Ditto on the thanks although the last sentence of the article did leave me hanging a bit. ;)

Thank the USCHO, and frequent Gopher poster ARM...he's acquainted with the author and I'm sure he'll relay your appreciation. ;)

I think it would be tough being a goalie for the Gophers because you won't ever face the number of shots that a regular D1 goalie would face so most people would not rank you or value you as highly as they might a goalie from one of those many "regular" or even below average teams. They can still win it all with an average goalie and they have in the past too.

Yes, thanks!
As for 2014, I thought she looked tired at the end of that season. I believe we saw the same thing back in Raty's first post season too, she looked tired & struggled. It may be that freshman goalies are not up to the rigors of a whole WCHA season but both of those carried the team after that. I expect Peters to be #1 next season but she will have had some game experience which should help her then & Leveille this one.

She came back from the Olympics on no sleep, and played an OT game every weekend, including a 3OT and a 2OT game. I agree she was out of gas, but it was related to the Olympics far more than year in school.

if you say so

During the regular season, if you lose, you lose, there is always the next game, but in the tournament … do or die, that’s a lot of pressure, especially for a goaltender who has not been though it and their team is the two time defending champ. Goalies get more credit than they deserve when the team wins and more blame than they deserve when the team loses. That’s part of the job description. If a skater makes a mistake there is always the goal tender and perhaps another skater to cover your blunder. For a goaltender every time you don't make the play a red light comes on.

I wonder what Mark Johnson’s comments about her may have had, she may not even have heard it, but I thought he was trying to get into her head. I forget his exact comments, maybe someone else remembers but she did give up the most goals she has ever given up to the Badgers.

The Gophers lost because Clarkson played better, especially on that delayed penalty, the players on the ice could not stop Clarkson, and they scored. Then scored on the PP. Two valiant comebacks in the game by the Gophers but when you are down by 2 goals twice in the championship game, odds are small that you are going to win the game.

She showed a few chinks in the armour that weekend in 2014, but that was a "long" time ago, and she still won the UW game. Some of us aren't too bummed about the Clarkson game. :). She was stellar last year and I would not expect anything less this year, unfortunately.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

“We need our freshmen to step up, and Sarah did that this past weekend,” Brandt said. “Frost always says, ‘You’re not really a freshman after your first weekend on this team,’ and I thought she did a good job. I’m excited to see where she goes.”

Is there a better first line in all of women's hockey? They certainly have the potential to become one of the best ever.

I still like fitting Menefee into the first line mix if whatever is keeping her out of the lineup is resolved but the current 1st line configuration is "clearly" the best in all of women's college hockey. ;)

Sure, I had forgotten that. But I got the same feeling in 14, just didn't seem as sharp in net. Have a game like that in January & nobody notices but it happens sometimes. The loss was certainly not her fault but she has only give up more than 3 goals once and looked razor sharp last March.

It would be interesting to hear the conversation where Frost tells the nation's leading scorer that she is being moved to the third line. "It's not you, it's me." "We're looking for a little more defense." "Yes, you've done all that we asked for, but we shouldn't have to ask."

On second thought, maybe he should leave well enough alone.

Ummm, this Potomak kid is good.

I have sort of heard that. Last week at Ridder I heard more than one person complain that the way she skates & puck handles they couldn't tell if it was Potomak or Brandt so it is entirely possible she is pretty good I guess.

Certainly no argument from me. Eeyore mentioned how well Garzone has started. I wanted to give Schipper her due credit. Fine start...playing well and disproving that "grinder" characterization. Hope to see that continue throughout the season. I think she's in the right spot to sustain her early momentum.

I've definitely noticed the similarity, but if it helps, Potomak is left handed and Brandt is right.

Early on, the puck is definitely going in for her more than it did last year. I wonder if it gave her confidence in that NCAA game versus RIT where she scored a goal with her speed and then had success in a larger role after Pannek and Lorence were booted. I do think that like Kelly Terry, no matter if Schipper is producing or not offensively, the greatest asset she brings to the team is the effort she puts into both her forecheck and backcheck. Hard work and good wheels don't ever have to slump. It probably helps as well to be on a line with Piazza, with whom she developed some chemistry last year. And my opinion of Pannek is that she is easy for people to play with because she sees the ice so well and quickly comes to an understanding of where her linemates are, so she makes others better.
