Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

I give credit to the Indians pitching staff from about 8 years ago. Our crew has yielded such losers as Baker, Slowey, and Blackburn.

And created decent pitchers out of players that might be #4s at best on other teams.

Hence my dilemma.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Silva doesn't count. He actually was a #4 on another team.

*cough* Radke *cough*

Honestly, he wasn't THAT good.

Even Lohse for a bit. Yeah. LOHSE.

I'm not saying that they are the greatest, but for every bad pitcher, we've had at least one good one that really had no business in being good. And vice versa.

Sigh. Twins coaches. Are they good? Depends on the day you ask. ;)

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

The only team Radke would have been the 4th starter on would have been the Yankees. And that's only because they were buying everyone's #1 starter.

You know what I'm getting at. Swivel-Head Brad was no true ace. But the Twins made him one. Still dunno how.

And for the record, I liked Brad.

The Twins, for all their supposed shortcomings, make diamonds out of coal. Except this year, sorta. Dunno how, they just do.

Example: according to most fans/media: our pitching staff sucks, our batters (looking at you Baby Jesus and Kubel) are underperforming, but somehow we are just out of first place, as usual, and chances are we're winning the division.

We can't place ALL the blame on division rivals sucking. We have to be doing something right.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

They also need to move Black Jesus up in the lineup. He's currently our best player not named Carl.

Maybe. Maybe he's doing that well because of where he is hitting.

Some people may respond to less pressure, resulting in a greater good for the team.

Let's say we move him up. He starts hitting .200 in that spot. Then how would you feel? Honest question.

If he's doing what he's doing, let him be, unless he desires to change things. Ya know?

Sounds like Cuddyer's lame excuse about not wanting to play 3rd base. ;)

Move Delmon up to 5th or 6th instead of 7th. He leads freaking baseball in batting average with RISP. Not having Cuddyer, Mauer, and Kubel in front of him has to make that average go up even further.

On the contrary. They won't pitch around the supposed threat of Cuddy, Baby Jesus, and Kubel to get to Young. They'll use their best stuff against Young. In theory you are correct, but theories are just educated wild-arse guesses. ;)

Why would anyone with a brain pitch around Double Play Cuddy?

Also, Butera should catch every day. He seems to be calling better games than Joe is lately.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

For the record, Radke has been my favorite Twin as long as I can remember. Kirby was up there, but there was something about Radke I just got hooked on.

Near the end there when he went out a pitched with a torn ****ing labrum and a fractured shoulder... :eek: **** schilling and his fake bloody sock. Takes a real pitcher to throw with those two injuries and be effective.

Except he gave up 4 runs in 4 innings and the Twins were swept by the Athletics. :p

Actually we CAN blame it on our division. When the division leader is on pace to win 89.5 games, thats not good. :D

The division is set to finish like this if on the same record pace.

White Sox 90-72
Tigers 86-76
Twins 86-76

Comparing that to other divisions, we are clearly the weakest at the top. You might be able to argue the West is weak as well (they are), but they also have 2 less teams which means they have more non division games against arguably better teams.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Not listening?
Apparently Slowey's last start Anderson told him that under no circumstance was he to shake off Mauer's signs, the game was babyjesus's to call. There are some issues with the staff that go deeper than just the fact that they suck.

He won 20 games on a team that only won 60 all year, I'd say that is as close to an ace as you could get.

He batted 3rd on Wednesday, and went like 3 for 5. BOX.

That was one season, he never even got close to approaching that again. He won 15 once, 14 once and the rest of his career was a bunch of 12s and 11s. That is NOT ace numbers. Nor is his 4.22 lifetime ERA. He had a total of 3 years with an ERA in the 3s...I know that stinks of ACE! ;)

Radke was a decent pitcher, but if he is an ace on your team your team stinks. Hence why he won 20 for an all time terrible Twins squad. He was at best a number 2, but I think he would be a better #3. You win 12 games in the #3 spot you are kicking but and taking names! Think Kevin Tapani in '91 :)

Let's not forget that Brad was a Twin when they were freaking terrible. In 1995, the Twins won 56 games...and Brad won 11 of them. Yeah, 11 wins doesn't look great on paper, but it was a fifth of their wins that year!! Until the Twins started winning in 2001, Brad only had one year with a winning record on a team whose high for wins from 1995-2000 was 78.

It's obvious that Pavano is more comfortable throwing to him. Bert said it is because Butera is more mobile and moves around more to frame the target.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

W-L has nothing to do with whether not a pitcher is good enough to be an ace since it's a team stat. ERA+ is a better way to assess it - and Radke's career ERA+ of 113 is only slightly above average. For comparison, MN's last ace - Santana - has a career ERA+ of 143.

Edit: the Twins really sucked balls tonight with runners on base. At least Duensing did his job giving up just a run in 5 innings.
