Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Thome continues to be the only Twin that can hit homeruns at Target Field... he got all of that one. :eek:

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

FYP. :p

Maybe we can offer somebody the entire Rochester roster in exchange for a decent starting pitcher. Question is, would anyone accept that?

I wouldn't...

This team needs an old priest and a young priest to exorcise the demons!

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Good to see Cleveland's bullpen is trying to imitate ours with ineptness.

Maybe we can trade with them :p

Ya know what would be nice...a Mauer homer!

edit: so much for that...way to get caught napping Joe :rolleyes:

I closed ESPN Gametracker when it was 7-2. Did it get worse? Good thing we score all those runs without Big Thunder.

soh: Did Joe Smallball hit into another double play?

Good thing we score all those runs without Big Thunder.
28 runs in 5 games (5.6 runs per game) is good production - and is nearly a run more per game than they've averaged over the season to date (4.7).

Nevermind the fact they've given up 18 runs in their two losses... :rolleyes:

The first of my predicted moves has happened today.

Burnett optioned to Rochester, Slama is movin' on up!

Yes. To end the would-be rally in the bottom of the eighth, I believe. Might have been the seventh. They all run together when they end the same way, you know.

Honestly, it's about time. Burnett has been terrible of late. Now we can see if Slama is the real deal. For the sake of our bullpen, I certainly hope he is.

I agree. I would also be 100% behind the Blackburn and Slowey getting booted for Duensing and Manship. IMO, you almost have to start giving guys like Kyle Waldrop a chance at this point. By the end of the season, I would not be surprised to see Kyle Gibson in a Twins uniform....

(At least) 3/5ths of our starting rotation needs to be replaced given the way they've pitched lately, and Rochester just doesn't have enough talent to do so. I think Duensing should probably be moved to the rotation, but among Blackburn, Slowey, and Baker, how do you decide who should stay and who should go? I'd be hard pressed to give a definate answer to that question.

I really hate saying stuff like 3/5ths of our rotation needs to be replaced because often times it's so knee jerk, but something needs to be done about it or this team is going nowhere.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Blackburn's ERA is the highest, so he should be removed from the rotation first. Slowey gave up 3 ER in 5 2/3 tonight, so that's pretty much the mediocre line we've come to expect from the bottom three of the rotation.

Good to see the bullpen *'ing things up tonight... first Crain can hold them at 1 with 2 outs and the bases loaded but gives up a 2-run single. The Twins manage to tie the game, but then Mijares walks the first guy and then gives up a run-scoring double to the gap to give the Cleveland steamers the lead again. :rolleyes:

If it ain't one thing, it's the other. Pitching was passable tonight (save for giving the lead right back after tying the game), but the offense was especially MIA--especially in the middle innings.

Be prepared: this team will be under .500 after returning home from the upcoming road trip.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

Wasting Mauer's leadoff double was bad.

Mauer bunting with two on and one out was worse.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Part III, {sigh}

I have never seen Mauer take the heat he is over the bunt...was it really that bad? (I couldnt watch so I have no clue)

Runners on 1st and 2nd with one out - MN had just tied it at 3 with the previous hit (they'd strung together singles as per usual). Mauer comes to the plate and inexplicably lays down a bunt in an ill-advised attempt to get an infield hit and load the bases - instead, the ball traveled about 10 feet and served as a pointless sacrifice when Kubel came up next and weakly grounded out to first.

And if Mauer had hit into a double play, which he does often, he'd be criticized for that.
Yet if the bunt for a hit had worked, he'd be praised for a smart play, funny how it all works huh.

With two on and one out, he should be swinging away. He's a career .300+ hitter for *'s sakes. Leave the bunt gimmickry to guys like Punto who are far less likely to get on base without making an out.

Mauer's had 17 GIDP's in 353 plate appearances this year - that's a rate of roughly 1 per 21 at-bats. I think I'll go with the ~5% risk of a double play by swinging away vs. the >80% chance of handing Cleveland an out by bunting.

Note: he has 32 extra base hits this season, which is nearly double the amount of double plays. The risk-reward clearly favors swinging away.
