Minnesota Twins 2010: Part IV - Thome's Quest for 600

Love the sweep, but the closing (regardless of the pitcher) needs serious improvement between now and the playoffs.

Closing needs improvement over yesterday much sooner than that or there won't be any playoffs. I assume Fuentes would have gotten the call by the Murphy at bat had he been available, but it is starting to look like he'll next take the field about the time that Morneau does. I don't think that the Twins acquired him to face just one batter -- in a game, let alone his Minnesota career.

The good news as far as Capps is concerned is the Rangers weren't smacking balls over outfielders' heads, but at least Rausch was getting most of the guys he faced out. Three hits and a walk doesn't inspire a lot of confidence.

As for the final play, had Hudson just thrown the ball to third w/o the pump fake, Young would have been tagged out and there'd be no controversy. As it was, the play was close enough that the runner could have been called out and nothing more would have been said. Of course, the ump wasn't looking at the tag, just like he earlier wasn't looking at the "contact".

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010: Part IV - Thome's Quest for 600

I think people are overreacting just a little bit. The Twins still lead the division by the same amount they did before and with the upcoming schedule I just dont see the Sux gaining any ground not to mention they have yet to prove they can beat the Twins head to head. Hell I doubt any of us would be surprised if the Sux lost 2/3 to Detroit. Remember the Sux have the same issue with their bullpen especially their closer.

I am doubting the team will go far in the playoffs (though we should have home field for the first round against a team not named the Yankees so we might make the LCS) but I would put large sums of money on the Twins winning the division, and I still say it will be by 5 or more games.

It might be time though for Gardy to stop playing the percentages and not worry about which pitcher is the "closer" and just have the ninth pitched by whoever he feels confident in that game and see who gets hot.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010: Part IV - Thome's Quest for 600

Capps faced four batters in the last 1/3 of an inning, got the save without retiring a batter...

Both close games the Rangers made really bad baserunning plays in the ninth to give the Twins the nod. We can call it good defense if we'd like. I'd prefer striking the #!@$@ hitters out.

On the bright side, the Twins continue to score despite Thome/Morneau and Valencia not in the lineup.

I hope Handy is right and we win this going away, but I won't be suprised if we need three of four vs. the Blue Jays to avoid game 163.

So far, we've gone 5-1 on this home stand and lost ground. The WSox seem to have gotten fired up by getting Manny. I doubt he personally makes that much of a difference, but if his presence makes them believe, then who knows.

Hell I doubt any of us would be surprised if the Sux lost 2/3 to Detroit.
If that's going to happen, Detroit better win the first two, because I don't see Bonderman beating Danks on Wednesday.

Remember the Sux have the same issue with their bullpen especially their closer.
Jenks has been better of late, and they just got Thornton back, and he closed yesterday's game. I think the Twins have to assume that Chicago is going to win every day. If they lose, great, but we can't count on it.

I have a tough choice. Do I watch the Det or ChW broadcast for an hour before the Twins game. I'm thinking Det is the lesser of two broadcast team evils.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010: Part IV - Thome's Quest for 600

KC pitcher walks the bases loaded and can't sniff the plate so Tolbert swings at the first pitch? Knucklehead.

Looking at the radar, Gardy should manage this as though it's a five innning game.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010: Part IV - Thome's Quest for 600

Only in this town would people seem to think that the team in second place who almost never beats the team in first place is somehow going to win the division. I am a cynic and a pessimist and I am guaranteeing the White Sux will not win this division.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010: Part IV - Thome's Quest for 600

Would someone tell Kubel that it is obvious the White Sux are gonna win the division because of our bad outing against Texas. (in a sweep) He should not be wasting his time hitting homers right now :d

Season's Over! :)

edit: Thomer too...HOLY CRAP THAT WENT INTO ORBIT!

Good lord did Thome get a hold of that one. Even better than the pelican shot from Tin Cup.
