Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

Agreed, it seems like they come out like **** on Friday and it takes a game to figure their opponent out. So it seems like they play better in the second game of a series as if it took them a game to gameplan for their opponent. At any rate, this is a horrible trend.

I don't think it is "taking a game to figure the opponent out." I think they just play uninspired. They aren't trying from the first faceoff (with the exception of the first CC game) on Fridays. It isn't like the opponent has been doing trickery form the beginning. The Gophs just aren't competing for the puck in those games, aren't picking up their players on D, aren't forechecking aggressively.

I think the lack of inspired play in front of Kangas might be partly due to overconfidence in front of him, but is more just not being prepared to bust out of the gates and hit anything that moves on Friday. I don't think it is likely a team dislike of Kangas, or conspiracy.

If this team could play aggressively for a whole game both days, they could be a team to be reckoned with and who ws in goal wouldn't matter so much..

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

The Gophers are 2-3 on Friday including a 1 goal loss. Not sure this is the result of poor preparation during the week followed by an overnight awakening or not, but they are clearly a work in progress. Either way I'm all for giving Patterson more time until he proves he cannot handle it.

So if Lucia were a good coach, he'd figure out how to change the schedule so all games are played on Saturdays and Sundays!

They play as inconsistently as a team of young players. Hopefully that will improve as the year goes on. At least this year they appear to be able to score when showing some heart. They need to learn to always act, instead of wait to react. Play with confidence. Then bodies are checked, races are won, backchecking is done and passes connect.

As for Patterson, I think he starts this weekend and next. As I stated elsewhere, I don't expect the Gophs to get any points this weekend, given the opponent. Next weekend, they better play like they want all 4.

They better, or there might be a national news story about some Rube burning down a remote town in the UP.

I bolded the most important part of your post. I think that will be the key to anything good that comes from this season. If they can find a way to play with heart for two, full games every weekend, these guys could be a pretty decent team seeing as they have been able to put the puck in the net. Obviously they had the two ugly games against SUCS and sconnie where they put themselves in a hole early. But the game that comes to mind is the first UNO game where they were facing a four goal deficit half way through the second period. They punched in two late goals in the 2nd and put in an early goal in the 3rd and were right back in it. Balls punched one in late to tie it. Obviously we all know that there was a defensive breakdown shortly there after that cost the Gophers a chance at a win or a tie. My point is, though, I remember teams in the past two years that would either A. get down early and quit(which has arguably happened in the previously mentioned games) or B. jump out to a two or three goal lead and **** it away by not being able to get the goal that puts the game away. I can't predict how the season goes from here, but if I had to find one good thing about this team, it would be the fact that they have actually showed the ability to score(when they are playing with heart, as you mentioned). I am hopeful they can carry efforts like the UNO game and the CC series into the rest of the season.

At least the recruiting front is still strong for the Gophers. Sounds like A.J. Michaelson has committed to the Maroon & Gold.

It's amazing how that train keeps rolling. I just wish (as we all do) that it would translate to the ice.

Heavily recruited Eagles junior forward picks Minnesota over North Dakota

A.J. Michaelson had just won a national championship. Now it was time to make a phone call.

So Michaelson punched up the number for Don Lucia and pressed the call button.

When the University of Minnesota men’s hockey coach answered, “I told him I wanted to be a Gopher,” Michaelson said.

“He said, ‘Welcome aboard, glad to have you,’ ” Michaelson said about his Sunday, Nov. 7, phone call that came after Michaelson’s team, Minnesota White, won the Bauer National Invitational Tournament at New Hope Ice Arena in New Hope.

And just like that, Michaelson, a junior forward who one of the state’s most coveted recruits, wrapped up a recruiting saga that included visits to most of the top midwest WCHA schools and finished with the highly anticipated phone call.

Michaelson’s second choice was the University of North Dakota, but he’d been leaning heavily toward Minnesota throughout the process.

“When I was growing up, ever since I was 5, I wanted to be Gopher,” said Michaelson, who lists current NHLers Phil Kessel and Thomas Vanek as two of his favorite former Minnesota players.

Michaelson said the drive to the Minneapolis campus from his Apple Valley home is “no longer than 25 minutes” and that his family is particularly excited about his decision to stay close to home.

Michaelson said he was excited about the possibility of playing with other incoming recruits, including Eden Prairie senior Kyle Rau. Most notably, however, is the commitment of former Lakeville North standout defenseman Brady Skjei. Michaelson and Skjei are longtime golfing buddies who have also played together on numerous elite and all-star teams.

“He’s a great player,” Michaelson said about Skjei, who is playing for the USA Hockey’s National Development Team Program this winter.

The 6-foot, 182-pound Michaelson was ranked No. 1 on the Hockey Hub’s list of the state’s top sophomores at the conclusion of last season, and he visited Minnesota, the University of North Dakota, the University of Minnesota-Duluth, Wisconsin and Bemidji State. All of those programs made scholarship offers.

Michaelson scored 19 goals and added 16 assists last season as the Eagles made a surprising run to the state Class AA tournament semifinals. Last summer he turned down an offer to attend the National Development Team Program in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Eagles are ranked No. 5 in Class AA in the Hockey Hub's preseason "Encyclopedia." Bolstering the Eagle's already lineup, and in more breaking news, Michaelson said standout defenseman Vince Pedrie was back roaming the hallways at Apple Valley high after spending part of the fall playing for the Kansas City-based Russell Stover Midget AAA 18-under team.

"He came back today," Michaelson said about Pedrie, who is listed as having three points (one goal, two assists) in three games with Russell Stover. "It was a shock when he showed up. He said he would have missed it."

Apple Valley coach Jerry Hayes said, as of Wednesday, Pedrie was not enrolled at Apple Valley high and that Pedrie's potential eligibility with the Eagles still was being determined.

Michaelson, who was drafted by the Waterloo Blackhawks of the United States Hockey League and also selected by the Portland Winter Hawks in the Western Hockey League’s draft, has said he chose to stay at Apple Valley in largely because of the opportunity to chase a state title.

Michaelson scored 11 goals and added 13 assists in 23 Upper Midwest High School Elite Hockey League games this fall and was selected to play on one of two league teams entered in the Bauer National Invitational Tournament Nov. 5-7 in New Hope. Michaelson registered a goal as Minnesota White won three games en route to the tournament title.

Michaelson is the fifth Minnesota high school player to commit to a Division I program heading into the 2010-11 season. Blake’s Ryan Bullock (Dartmouth), Wayzata’s Tony Cameranesi (Minnesota-Duluth), Virginia’s Garrett Hendrickson (St. Cloud State) and Eden Prairie’s Kyle Rau (Minnesota) are the others. Michaelson is the only junior on the list.

Apple Valley begins the high school season on at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 30 against Bloomington Jefferson at the Bloomington Ice Garden.

Rau skips senior season at Eden Prairie for USHL

When Eden Prairie forward Kyle Rau verbally committed to play hockey for the Gophers, he was told he could stay for his senior season of high school and then go straight to college.

Plans have changed. Rau will forgo his senior season with the Eagles to play with Sioux Falls of the U.S. Hockey League.

"It's a tough call for him to give up playing with his buddies and for his community," Eagles coach Lee Smith said. "And it's disappointing because the other schools that recruited him weren't putting that on him. Initially the Gophers weren't either. So for them to tell us one day before tryouts -- that's tough. It's a loss to Eden Prairie and high school hockey."

Rau, a 5-9, 165-pound center, tallied 77 points last season and emerged as one of the state's most electrifying players. He helped the Eagles win a Class 2A state title as a sophomore and led them back to the section finals last season.

Rau, a Star Tribune all-metro first team selection, chose the Gophers over Denver and North Dakota.

Just thought I'd drop in for a second to congratulate you all on the Gophs holding on to their #19 ranking. And you deserve it. :)

I thought I heard after he made the announcement to leave for the USHL that he is indeed returning to Eden Prairie.

Thank you. I think us holding our ranking reflects how tough of an opponent Bye has become over the past few years.

Any word on how the sick and injured are progressing? Will we get back to full strength minus Budish this weekend?

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

From Gophersports

Weekend Overview: Minnesota heads to Michigan Tech this weekend for a pair of road games. The Gophers have played 10 games this year, but only two away from Mariucci Arena. Minnesota is 2-0-0 on the road this year and has won three straight games at John MacInnes Student Ice Center in Houghton, Mich. Minnesota did not play last week and Friday will mark the team's first game in 13 days since they tied border-rival Wisconsin 3-3. The week off could not have come at a better time for Minnesota. Against Wisconsin, the Gophers were without Nick Larson (injury), Pat White (illness), Nick Bjugstad (illness), Jake Parenteau (illness) and Zach Budish (injury). Everyone with the exception of Budish, who is out for the year, could be ready for the trip to Michigan Tech.

Last Time Out: Minnesota went 0-1-1 against Wisconsin on Nov. 5-6 at Mariucci Arena. On Friday, the Gophers killed three first-period power plays and were about to escape the opening frame unscathed until Wisconsin's Michael Mersch scored an unassisted goal with 53 seconds left in the period. The Badgers would add four goals in the second period and one in the third to win 6-0.

On Saturday, Taylor Matson and Jacob Cepis scored first-period goals and the Gophers led 2-1 after the first period. Jay Barriball tallied his ninth goal of the year in the second period and Minnesota took a 3-2 lead into the final frame. Wisconsin's Jordy Murray scored his second goal of the game with less than three minutes remaining to force the game to overtime. Both teams took three shots each in the five-minute extra session. Kent Patterson made 23 saves to preserve the tie.

Series History: Minnesota leads the all-time series with Michigan Tech 167-76-15 and twice defeated the Huskies (1974 and 1976) to win a national championship. The Gophers own a 6-3-1 record against Michigan Tech in their last 10 games and have won the last three meetings, all in Houghton, Mich. This weekend will be the fifth and sixth consecutive meetings (March 6, 2009 - Nov. 20, 2010) between the teams in Michigan. The previous six games between the teams (March 3, 2007 - Nov. 16, 2008) were all at Mariucci Arena. Tech heads to the Twin Cities for a pair of games later this season on Feb. 25-26.

About The Huskies: Michigan Tech is 3-4-2 on the year and 1-4-1 in the WCHA after going 2-3-0 in an August 13-18 exhibition tour of Germany and Austria this summer. They have played only three homes games this season (last being Oct. 16) and are undefeated on home ice with a 1-0-2 record. The Huskies began the year with a 3-0-1 record but are 0-4-1 in their last five games. Four Huskies - Steven Seigo, Eric Kattelus, Milos Gordic and Deron Cousens - lead the team with eight points. Gordic is tied for the team lead in goals (4) with Brett Olson, Alex MacLeod and Bennett Royer. Seigo has three goals and five assists, while Kattelus has one goal and seven assists. Cousens, who does not have a goal this year, leads the team with eight assists. Like Minnesota, the Huskies have used two goaltenders this year. Kevin Genoe is 2-3-1 and sports a .910 save percentage, while Josh Robinson has a 1-1-1 record.

Is the Game On?: Thirty-one of Minnesota's 34 regular-season games have been or will be televised this year, but there is no television coverage for either game this weekend at Michigan Tech. However, GopherSports.com will be live blogging both games, providing up to the second information.

Technically Speaking: Michigan Tech leads the WCHA with an average of 21.3 penalty minutes per game. They have racked up 128 minutes in only six games. Denver is second with an average of 18.0 minutes per games (144 PIM in eight games). Minnesota's power play ranks tied for eighth in the league (five for 29) at 17.2 percent.

Road Success: The Gophers play four of their next six games on the road. Minnesota is 2-0-0 away from Mariucci Arena this year, with both wins coming at Colorado College. The Gophers have scored 13 goals on the road and have had recent success at Michigan Tech. Minnesota has won its last three games in Houghton, taking a pair of 3-2 games last year and earning a 2-0 win on March 7, 2009, thanks to 21 saves from Alex Kangas.

Kangas vs. Tech: Alex Kangas has four career shutouts and two of them have come against Michigan Tech. Kangas stopped 38 shots in a 3-0 Nov. 16, 2008, home win and earned a 2-0 road win on March 7, 2009, stopping 21 shots. In seven career games against the Huskies, Kangas is 4-1-1 with a 1.85 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage.

If Kangas plays I would play him against Michigan St. He hasn't had great luck against Michigan.
