Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

Re: Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

Quite a loss for Red. Thought he might retire. Sounds like you guys might be like we were last season with a FR class of 9-10? We'll obviously be a more experienced team. Deeper and perhaps more talented on D depending on how two promising FR D (Zuhlsdorf and Lindgren) adapt. With the loss of Fasching, offensive scoring may be an issue depending on how well former Hockey East All-Rookie Mike Szmatula fills that gap, and top scorers Bristedt, Kloos, and Sheehy perform. Schierhorn should be much improved after a good, not great season. IMO on paper looks like the potential for good season, possibly another repeat B1G title and NCAA playoff berth.

Michigan typically loses a lot every year. This has been the first year in 3 or 4 where we had a mass exodus. Coincidentally, actually it wasn't much of a coincidence as this was the reason, Michigan made the tournament this past season. Well, we were better. Offensively at least.

I'm not worried about Michigan scoring next season, as always defense and goal-tending will be the issue. Leadership "might" also be an issue next season. We lost a lot....

You forgot "could be a medium season".;) Sparty lost 10 seniors, Penn St. lost 8, Mich is most likely in a rebuilding year, OSU lost several key players, and I suspect the Badgers will get better with the new coaching staff, but I don't see them as a contender yet. The Gophers probably lost the least and are replacing them with some good recruits. Who do you see as a better option as a title contender than the Gophers? Nanne is a Gopher? I thought he was a Buckeye?
"I played in a death metal band. People either loved us or they hated us... or they thought we were OK."

Yes the Gophers should win the WEAK Big Ten. That doesn't do much for a lot of people anymore.

Nanne is a Gopher now.

FYP unless of course you've taken a survey.:D Have a link on Nanne?

Yeah. Have to figure the Gophers will be at or near the top of the B1G and possibly favorites. I still think MI and UW could put up a fight. But that will still probably land us on the bubble. That really again is going to come down to our neighborhood NC battles.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

With the AD search over at MN, will Don Lucia get a 2 year extension or will he he a lame duck this year? Seems like the new AD would know him from his past experience at the U. Any thoughts?

A short extension would be my guess as well. If he fires Lucia but keeps Pittino (with his $7 million buyout) that would be terrible IMO.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

Does the length of the extension matter when it comes to a buyout? I don't pay much attention to that stuff.

I think this could be Lucia's last year if a surprising move isn't made this summer and the Gophers don't at least win an NCAA game next year. So what are the implications of firing him with a one year extension vs a two year extension?

No easy link but there is a comment on this pic where Marooney says he's excited to be teammates

Not sure about that link. Obviously his family is deep in the MN hockey tradition so it's hard to justify a transfer to the Gophers without something more substantial than that in the press. Nanne will most likely be the most overall talented offensive/defenseman for the Buckeyes and my guess is he'll be fitted into Dalrymple's role.

Hammy confirmed it on GPL.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

I could be mistaken, but if that is true wouldn't he have to red shirt similar to what Szmatula did (unless he's using a One Time Transfer exception)?

Re: Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

Since he didn't play last year I'd think he might be able to play right away.

Medical redshirt may allow him to play right away. Seems strange we haven't seen anything in the press or on his twitter on the transfer though.

EDIT:

This seems like the best kept secret for next season, but I did find a tweet stating Tyler Nanne will be with the Gophers next season. Nanne will add a strong offensive upside to a deep D corps. Very positive addition.

Nanne hasn't tweeted since 2015 and there is a lot of talk of the transfer on twitter by people connected.

I looked at @GopherHockey and they didn't mention anything about Nanne. Nice addition.

Per Jeff Cox of SBN College Hockey:

Nanne has "has elite-level agility and a surprisingly heavy shot for his size." However, the problem with Nanne is that he is only listed at 5'10, 175. If this screams Brian Rafalski lite to you, I would not blame you at all. Rafalski was a smooth skating, offense first defenseman who rang up 50 points four times over his NHL career.

This is exactly the type of player you bank on though later in the Draft. When you're a good team drafting at the end of every round or really any team trying to find inefficiencies in the Draft to make the most out of your later round picks that usually have about a 12% chance of playing in the NHL, there are certain types of players you should go after. Scorers who are smaller is probably on the top of that inefficiency list. Nanne is as good a bet as anyone to outplay his draft spot. He's played forward in high school and that agility combined with his shot and forward instincts should at least give him a puncher's chance of scoring at a decent clip professionally.

I see that he didn't play at all last season, so he must have been injured with the Madison Capitals after finishing up at Edina? Anyone know the nature of his injury? Must have been serious to have missed all of last season.

So I hear the Twins are honoring the Fighting Whioux for their national Championship. Time to Boycott the Twinkies!

Re: Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

They are boycott worthy already... I had no plans to give them money anytime soon.

Not news, but hockey is very big in the cities. And Gopher alum outnumber ND alum by 20 to 1 and five times that in Minnesota (see the name of said sports team)? I also didn't see any mention of the U of M women who have won numerous national championships including this year.

That's seriously stupid.
