Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

Re: Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

> Kieffer Bellows has a great shot, but about half the time he would be better off looking to make a play instead of shooting every time he gets the puck.

So he hasn't changed since mites. ;) He played on a spring team with my kid back in mites one time. I once thought about pointing out to him that his dad had over 1,000 career NHL points and more than half of those were assists. I decided to let his dad tell him that if he wanted to. Another kid on that same mite team had his parents offer him rewards for points scored, but they made an assist worth 2 and goal worth 1, that kid became a set-up man in high school (though he still scored plenty of goals).

Couple of thoughts. Good to hear about Lindgren. I would add that MN is used to bringing in top tier D talent. We usually bring in the top player in MN (which is usually some of the tops in the country - see Goligoski, Schmidt) and a bevy of U18 players. But Glover was seen as an above average U18 player - and it has taken him some time to get to D1. Maybe Lindgren is right there...but not even Reilly, a two time first team all American, was a world beater in his frosh year.

I have seen very little of Middelstadt. But he has excelled at every level he's been introduced to...including moving from high school to these international U18 teams. If Middelstadt comes in this year and it means he's with the team an extra year (no way of knowing), it would be in the team's best interest to bring him in.

Watched Mittelstadt in a few of the games. His stickhandling skills are exceptional, good speed, and full ice vision. Could be a valuable asset next season for the Gophers, but he must be at center.

On full display on the USA's 7th goal; also check out the pass Clayton Keller makes a little more than a minute in: http://teamusa.usahockey.com/news_article/show/640377?referrer_id=701370

That's what I call a passing, stickhandling and shooting clinic by the USA. Embarrassing loss for Canada. Surprised the USA lost to the Fins. This team was gold worthy. But they still nailed the bronze with precision play par excellence. Like to see Mittelstadt in Maroon and Gold next season.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

The speed of the game at the U18 looked a little tough for Mittelstadt. He'd probably take a few months to get up to speed if he comes in the fall. It's hard to gauge his top speed with his short stride. His stickhandling is world class, though. He should be fine right away in the weak Big Ten.

Team USA last did better than a bronze in 1960, and that year the Olympics counted as the WC. That roster would need a not so mini Miracle to win gold. Stinks the Olympics are the only true best on best we can get for hockey these days.

Few NHL players are going to take the offer to play in the WC after a season of hockey. Think.

USA dominated by Canada as expected. Could be a long tournament.

I wonder why any would. Do we have to place in the top 8 or something to avoid relegation? Otherwise, I see no reason for a guy under contract to play in this.

USA jumped out to an early lead on the PP. Could have been 2-0 USA had Foligno buried the shortie on a pass from Larkin. Fasching, no shots on goal?? Another good Canada team this year, but not a strong as last year. Looking at the USA schedule, they've still got a shot at the quarters.

Canada had no problem putting NHL players on the ice last year (i.e. Crosby, Duchene, Giroux, Seguin, Spezza, etc.) and they blew everyone off the ice. I see Dumba has signed onto the Canada squad this season. IMO it's been a matter of personal choice and it's just not been a popular one for the American NHL players after a season of smash mouth hockey. Like to see that change.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

I didn't see the first period or the first few minutes of the second, but on Canada's decisive 3rd goal, which gave them a two goal lead, it looked like Brady Skjei misplayed it by allowing Matt Duchene all kinds of time and space, which Duchene took advantage of by walking in and firing from close range on a beauty of a wrister. Instead of moving up to challenge Duchene, Skjei retreated to the net to cover another Canadian forward, perhaps not realizing that his D partner already had him covered. Of course this one play was just one of many other mistakes the USA made throughout the game, but this one was one of the more obvious. Perhaps it was a case of miscommunication with his defensive partner, but on that play it sure looked like Duchene was Skjei's man.

Brady's obviously made HUGE strides in his game since his freshman year (remember him then?) and hopefully he can continue to get better and reach his full potential and have a long and successful NHL career.

Ryan Edquist to BC. was he originally slated to come to Minnesota this fall? If so, assuming he realized Schierhorn was the guy going forward? Or something else?
