Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

Re: Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

Easter Sunday on CBS vs ESPN2. Come on now let's not read too much into that.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

Still think that's pretty impressive. It also outdrew last year's men's NC game on ESPN itself on primetime after a month of hype. Remember the men's game has twice the teams, perhaps 20x the national attendance and maybe a hundred times the televised games that the women's game had. Frankly, I think it speaks to hockey enthusiasm in Minnesota.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

Yeah, Easter Sunday has nothing to do with it and most people don't channel surf and stop on women's NCAA hockey.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

Ya they are ranking them as potential NHL goalies. Schierhorn needs to take a step next year as he was definitely good but not great. Jurusik was surrounded by garbage, so tough to gauge what he'll become. I could see them being about even statistically next year, and a separation occurring either way in their junior years.

Which is the reason I wonder about the scout's criteria for evaluating Jurusik above Schierhorn. Schierhorn made some circus saves last season with his glove hand, which is amazingly quick. Agreed, Jurusik's numbers are partially due to the team in front of him, but I just don't think he has the same quickness and overall skill set as Schierhorn.

The other day Mileski of KFAN fame said, the Men's National championship game didn't have better national tv ratings than the Women's National Championship replay game.

I had to look this one up and apparently the Women's NC was the most watched college hockey game last season! The UND/Q game may have suffered some exposure after being kicked over to ESPN2 from ESPN where it competed with the NBA Warriors game that broke the Bulls win record. The Gopher/Union NC game was the most watched since 2009.

Frozen Four Title Game ratings since 2009

2016: 541,000 (North Dakota vs. Quinnipiac)**
2015: 635,000 (Providence vs. Boston University)
2014: 717,000 (Union vs Minnesota)
2013: 402,000 (Yale vs. Quinnipiac)
2012: 353,000 (Boston College vs. Ferris State)**
2011: 624,000 (Minnesota Duluth vs. Michigan)
2010: 526,000 (Boston College vs. Wisconsin)
2009: 656,000 (Boston University vs. Miami)

**Game aired on ESPN2

Good point. The NHL has been trending towards size and strength in recent years. I think the avg NHL goalie today is about 6'2 with greatest % being 6'2+. Dubnyk is around 6'6, Kuemper/6'5, which allows goalies to play a bit deeper and see better over screens. Jurusik is 6'2. But a case could be made that goaltending is still a technical pursuit not entirely based upon height.
Hope that size helps Dubnyk and the Wild in an hour. God knows they need it. Haula is back so we've got that Nino-Haula-Pominville line (hopefully) going for us.

Bingo. The Badgers wouldn't have known proper defensive structure if it bit them in the ***. The defenders are the worst part on our team and if we go into next year with no significant upgrades I think we won't see much improvement outside of goal scoring: returning all forwards, likely Kunin stays, and Frederic/Zimmer coming in. It might take till Max Gildon gets to UW. FYI to gopher fans: I think Schierhorn is better but it's still hard to judge since the teams weren't on the same level. Reference: Jurusik played in 33 games (1,978 mins) and faced 1,055 shots and Schierhorn played in 37 games (2,144 mins) and faced 1,018 shots.

Nice to see the two U of M recruits each getting a goal in Team USA's 6-1 win over Sweden! Casey Mittelstadt opened the scoring for the U.S. with a beautiful wrister, which I happened to see on KSTP's sport segment this evening. Then Ryan Lindgren scored the USA's third goal on a give-and-go passing play...might he lend the Gophers some offensive punch from the blue line?

Other Minnesotans who scored for the U.S. were Kieffer Bellows (Edina) and Joey Anderson (Roseville). With six players Minnesota is well represented on the team. Missouri and New York, with three players each, are tied for second.

Zuhlsdorf will likely be more of an offensive threat.

If the two of them match Brodzinski and Seeler's 31 total points, that would be awesome. I'd expect about 25 total points between the two of them.

Offense from the D may be a real pain point.

It certainly was this past season (at least from what we expect of a Gopher team).
I think Johnson is going to make a jump in pts, though.

My bigger concern is how well they move the puck zone-to-zone.

So how did Mittlestedt look overall? I forgot the game was on NHLnet.

The key there is the year. If they can put up 25 pts as freshmen vs. 31 as a junior and senior, things will be looking pretty good. We should keep in mind that Bischoff will be primary QB if he stays, but that would make 25 all the more impactful. Goals from offense is almost always the key for the Gophers. IMO last year recruits were on average a little light in that department.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

I wouldn't assume Bischoff is the PP QB. I'd say Zuhlsdorf or Johnson if he steps up would be in the running.

You may be right, although Bischoff was chosen as QB over Johnson last year and is the only experienced Gopher QB on the team. My best guess is that Johnson will be on the inside track for QB #2...with Zuhlsdorf and Lindgren on the outside looking in for their first year. IMHO

Seems likely to me Bischoff's experience, consistent increase in his point totals since his FR year and the much needed senior leadership on the backline makes him a likely candidate for another season as alternative captain and the D QB. Overall I thought Johnson improved on D as the season progressed and showed flashes of his offensive skill set at needed times. But I remember a couple bad turnovers and position play issues too that he'll need to work on for game situations.

On Zuhlsdorf, solid offensive minded D, but it remains to be seen how quickly he adapts to D1. Traditionally he's not buried the puck much, but tends to jump up in the play and create scoring opportunities.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

I really like what I've seen of Lindgren so far in the Worlds. Solid defensively, and makes a lot of smart plays in all three zones. I'm anxious to see how he does against better competition than what the U.S. has faced so far.

Nice to see he keeps getting considered for captain. Assume that can't hurt in giving him ample ice time next year to make the leap.
