Minnesota Gophers 2022-23

Either the U's Bookstore can predict the future, or they're not afraid to tempt fate:

I used to work with a guy (both computer programmers; coincidentally, he now lives in the Twin Cities) who would call any major problem or bug we might have in our products "a little oops, no big deal, just a little oops".

This is a little oops they have there. Just a little oops on the web site. :-)

I may buy one now. May become a collectors item. The curse of Vicb may strike again. Kind of like the "Dewey defeats Truman" headlines oops. ;-)

I don't think it is a very long list of teams who have played as many or more total NCAA Tournament games as UW & UM have versus each other. To date:

2006, final, UW
2008, quarter, UW
2012, final, UM
2014, semi, UM
2015, semi, UM
2016, semi, UM
2018, quarter, UW
2019, final, UW
2023, semi, ?

We do seem to wind up on the same side of the bracket a lot. In addition to the six listed above, we were in the same half in:

2005
2011
2022

Adding to the three finals, years where we were on opposite sides:

2009
2017

No UM years:
2001
2007
2021

No UW years:
2001
2002
2003
2004
2010
2013

I didn't include the 2020 tournament that wasn't. It looks like we've both been in the field 14 times, and of those, we've been in the same half of the draw nine times. Familiarity, breeds contempt, so, a rivalry is born.

Considering that MN and WI have played each other 9 times, and there are only 6 other schools that have even been in the tournament 9 times, it's pretty safe to say no two schools have played more frequently.

I thought MN and UMD might be close, but it looks like they've only played each other 4 times in the tournament. Remarkably, all 4 of those meetings have been since 2010 - a period where UMD only made the tournament 6 times. The Gophers and Duluth made the tournament in the same year 7 times from 2001-09, and somehow never once played each other during that decade!

Wisconsin and UMD have also played each other 4 times, but all 4 came during the 5 year run between 2007 and 2011 - with 3 of the meetings happening in the Frozen Four.

Gracie has spent so much of her Gopher career out hurt, but she has been coming on SO strong lately. I hope she can keep it going for five more periods, and bring it all home!

Pretty veteran rotation. Five seniors (four in their 5th year) and an Olympic medalist on the blue line. Five more 5th-year seniors in the top 9 forwards. The future is this weekend, because it gets a lot tougher after this season to compete.

This is the Gopher team I’ve watched for 7 years, rather than 3 weeks.

We got 11 minutes, I’m still hoping.

pshaw, that was crap. What the hell were we doing in the second period and the third until Wisconsin took the lead. And suddenly we decide to play hard. WTF, the national semifinal isn’t enough reason to play hard?

If we luck out and make it to tomorrow, I hope we play like the previous three weeks.

Reminds me a little of 2016. Gophers score early. Wisconsin scores twice to lead in the third period. A Gopher senior scores to tie it up. That time, a national rookie of the year won it OT (Peyton Hemp was national rookie of the year). Trying to speak it into existence -- unfortunately, Dan did that for the first UW goal.
