Minnesota Gophers 2022-23

I see that the Gophers had nine 5th years this year. How many are in their recruiting class for next year?
I think it is currently six, 4 F and 2 D. They lose 4 D, but they have a couple in Nicholson and Franco who weren't dressing. They also have a couple of 4th year goalies who likely aren't returning. So they need at least one D, I would think, and a couple of goalies from somewhere.

What's the story with Josie Dunn? Still injuries?

The gopher website says they have 5 fifth year forwards and 4 fifth year defense. Is that not accurate?
I have no reason to think otherwise. Forwards: Skaja, Heise, G. Zumwinkle, Boreen, Norcross. D: Ostertag, Hengler, Oden, Norton. Both goalies would have eligibility via the Covid year if they so chose.

Guessing so, but I don't know.

She pulled the THEE osu as far as where they rank in the Big Ten from a total athletic standpoint. Talked about all the opportunities that tosu affords someone who choses the program. Problem with that perspective is that all the Big Ten schools have that. It's not unique to them. Took the shot at the Tunnelers that they only "select" kids.

It caught my ear when she talked about her players are ones that Minnesota and Wisconsin didn't even recruit; I'm quite sure I can name two who Wisconsin definitely recruited. :-)

I think she means people like Schepers, Bizal, Levis, and Rosenthal, who were key to her program in the early years when to a large extent, Minnesota and Wisconsin were getting first choice of Minnesota kids. Ohio State has always had some success in Ontario, but to win, you need the right players to supplement those like Maltais and Jaques. Minnesota HS players haven't been that key to Wisconsin's success, and the Gophers can't take all of the best players, but she did a good job of finding people who would play the way she asked them to play.

Tatum Skaggs is another poster child for it I believe. It’s a great hockey story that the OSU crew is understandably proud of. Skaggs scored the OT goal vs Wisco to win their first ever WCHa tourney championship. I believe she was also part of the OSU team that had their first weekend sweep of Wisco. She was interested in Wisco, but there wasn’t much return interest - I think they may have said she could walk on. No insider knowledge, I just listen to podcasts.

Honestly I think these are great stories. Mercyhurst’s first all American, Desi Clark, was recruited by a DIII school and Mercyhurst. She was a Program changer, like Muzerall’s first crew. Great stories and you can understand why the people involved take such pride in them.

Definitely someone who brought a lot to tOSU's program, but from what I've heard, Skaggs, like Maltais, was a Handrahan recruit. Of course Muzerall was in charge when they ultimately signed, so if nothing else, she didn't lose them.

There were a number of incremental recruits that led to the Lakers reaching the NCAAs year after year as an at-large team, a string broken, ironically enough, the year the CHA got an autobid.

Maltais, Skaggs, and Schepers arrived in Muzerall's second season, and even with Potter having a year in the interim, recruiting was far enough out in those days that Handrahan still had an imprint on recruiting. Going full circle, Muzerall was likely the program changer/starter at Minnesota, although Ambria Thomas and Erica Killewald were very important as well.

.

True, I give her credit for developing and retaining those players, but they were Handrahan’s recruits.

it’s kind of funny that Muzerall says Minnesota selects players; meanwhile Frost says Ohio State was a sleeping giant in part due to Ontario proximity and all those players. Maybe they should trade jobs lol.

She said tosu treats thier players better than MN in regards to the outside the rink things like travel accommodations and the like.

How is that "taking a shot?" At least back in the day, the U of M took great pride in the fact that local kids "grew up wanting to be Gophers." Thus the ability to select.

Are you seriously suggesting that this recruiting advantage has been lost?

Or that this is somehow something to be embarrassed about?

Me thinks you don't know a good thing when you see it.

Think of it as the muzzinator saying "select"' implies that the tunnelers don't work very hard to recruit...

I understood that's what you meant. My position is that it's not a valid complaint. The Gophers are getting the players they want, and are putting an awesome team on the ice. Why would the coaching staff spend valuable time on needless efforts?

The rest of the story is that, when it comes to Ice Hockey, recruiting at Ohio State is simply more difficult than it is at Minnesota. How is this anything other than a self-evident fact? Especially when the coach making the comment has recruiting experience at both schools?

]I don’t want to invite wrath and criticism by saying this but it seems like UMD put on a great tourney.

This was the eighth FF I've covered in a row and it was absolute eons beyond any other that I've been to, from my perspective. It was treated like a big event and the reporters there who also cover men's FF said it was on par with what those events look like from a media perspective and handling it professionally. I hated everything about driving to Duluth in mid-March and the weather and I'd still say Duluth should host more often. It was a great experience.

I don't even understand most of what I post on this forum so hats off to you for your understanding...

What's the complaint? The muzzinator was just muzzinating.

Poor little tosu.

Which in this case means being just slightly too candid, in terms of self-interest.

Coach Muzzerall will make the minor adjustment soon enough, and her pressers will be just as vanilla and boring as everyone else's.
