Minnesota Gophers 2022-23

That time, a national rookie of the year won it OT (Peyton Hemp was national rookie of the year).
Unfortunately, Sarah Potomak was also the reigning WCHA Rookie of the Year. No comment on who was the 2023 WCHA Rookie of the Year.

No way we deserved to win that game.

Seriously, that was a great game. OT is the very definition of 'could have gone either way'. Too easy to focus on the flaws, both teams have 'em. I'm hoping Ohio St will show theirs on Sunday :-)

Just got back from a get together with a number of Gopher women's hockey fans to watch the game. We had the stream up on a big screen and had a lot of good food. Enjoyed watching the game and certainly was disappointed with how it turned out but overall it's what you would expect from a top 3 WCHA matchup. This year the Sinners were the Tunnelers kryptonite, the Tunnelers were the Yuckeyes kryptonite, and the Yuckeyes were the Sinners Kyptonite.

I guess that means Muzzinator's marauders will probably win the National title? I guess that would seem like the lesser of two evils for me.

We'll see. The two late season games between UW and OSU in Madison were both extremely competitive. I don't think that anyone should be surprised either way it goes on Sunday.

Hey Tunnelers...You have your work cut out for you, now.

I watched the Tunnelers play the second period, and the first half of the third period against Wisconsin on Friday--like a movie I have seen before over and over again. Too many times. You'd think the national semifinal against Wisconsin is an important game...lol.

I have seen enough.

I just got my first chance to watch the goals from Friday's game. That wily, old coach Johnson did run a nice pick play off the faceoff to get the Badgers their first goal in the third period. Curl rubs out Ostertag on the faceoff and then goes to the net, where she and Edwards now have a 2-on-1 versus Wethington down low. If Wethington steps up to defend Edwards, Curl is alone in front. As it was, she didn't really take either of them away. Nice design, because Johnson knows that a) the officials aren't sharp enough to pick up on the fact that it was interference, and b) even if they do, they'll say, "Not going to make a call that can impact the game." I suppose when you watch your team be completely futile on offense for 300 minutes straight, you go to the drawing board and come up with all sorts of ways you might be able to steal a goal down the road. Over the years, his team has been one of the best at bumping players off their path, especially on the PP. Many times, the fault is on the defending players, because they shy away from the contact, instead of being more forceful and making the interference obvious so the officials will see it. Curl's pick wasn't subtle, but in a FF game, they'll let it go every time.

I get that you are frustrated but my comment is for the immediate future for the Tunnelers. They lose a lot of talent off this years team and they have been losing ground on the recruiting front to the Yuckeyes, Sinners, and for next year, even the Tommy Bahama's. The Tansfer portal has been better utilized by both the Yuckeyes and the Sinners. Tunneler manglement needs to step up their game.

IDK....Curl and Ostertag are tied up as they both slide towards the faceoff dot from the boards. Curl is able to shake free of Ostertag and go to the net and Ostertag loses her balance. Meanwhile LE gets the puck clean and skates around Ostertag as she's re-gaining her balance. Wethington picks up Curl, uses her stick to immobilized Curl's stick, so LE had no choice but to make the attempt herself. I'm not sure where the penalty would have been.

It's kind of like a block in football where the back chips the pass rusher and then releases downfield. Curl's assignment on the play is to chip, the UM D. She doesn't have to knock her down, just prevent her from being able to contest Edwards gaining the puck. Well-designed, well-executed, but by the rules, it is interference. Are they going to call it? No. Maybe in the first month of a season where the direction by the rules committee is to crack down on interference.

Yeah but I would say from the video I have slo-moed, Curl and Ostertag are mutually tied up, kind of like when 2 players get engaged along the boards and they stay engaged until they mutually release. Ostertag is preventing Curl from getting to the puck, and Curl is preventing Ostertag from getting the puck.

Yeah but I would say from the video I have ...
I'd say that you suck at watching film, but that doesn't change the fact that you're celebrating a natty and I'm wondering who reminded GWH that they are, after all, a Minnesota team.

Friday's postgame media conference. The two seniors were likely selected based on their ability to remain fairly composed after a sudden end to their season/careers.

They handled it with a lot of Grace. (Ducks)

thank you for posting - I see all the press conferences from before the frozen four through the championship game are posted on the UMD Bulldogs YouTube channel. I was looking for these previously and couldn’t find them but this seems obvious now. I don’t want to invite wrath and criticism by saying this but it seems like UMD put on a great tourney.
