Minnesota Gophers 2022-23

I got goose bumps seeing how pumped Norcross was , skating to the bench after her goal.

to comment on something upthread, Murphy and Heise both play with emotion and heart that is fun to watch, even if it sometimes appears Heise is trying to do too much; I interpret it as a well intentioned player trying to put the team on their back. I don’t watch enough of Murphy to notice the dirtiness. Is it possible she’s trying to reform, but now has a reputation?

Possible, but she's already dived at least once today. I do think she's cut down on the actually dirty play over the last few weeks. I hope so, because outside of the shenanigans, she's such a delightful player to watch.

Hopefully, she can dial back some of the most blatant instances by the time she's a senior, and get more in line with the kind of player that Rosenthal is for Ohio State. There's never going to be any Lady Byng trophy's in her future.

It seems Norcross lost playing time a while back and she reclaimed it the last couple - few weeks. To me, her recent play is her best in the two years she's been a Gopher. I agree, it was fun to see her joy when she scored!!

She had some good stretches last year with A.Weth. and A.Pot. This year, she wound up on the 4th line where your ice time is going to vary game to game, and the composition of that unit wasn't set for long due to injuries. She backchecks hard, so she made that line much stronger defensively. She kind of fills a similar role on that line to what Skaja brings to the first.

Eeyore, should we revisit our discussion from a few weeks ago about whether the Gophers needed to: a) score more; or b) defend better! Your main point, that they needed to find secondary scoring, was very true, and this weekend proved it. Heise's line and Zum combined to score once, Skaja's E.N. goal. They were successful offensively because Murphy (3 G) and the 3rd line (3 G) picked up the slack, and Wetherington, as the P-by-P guy liked to call her, chipped in with one. So half of the goals came from the "others", which is what you were saying that they had to have.

It also helped that Vetter was able to keep many high-quality chances out of the net by one means or another. She didn't have much chance on the two yesterday, and the one S today, when you stop a breakaway, it has to be up to your teammates to defend any follow up. Overall, she's proven to be far better than most against the Grade A chances. It's the ugly slop that's bouncing around that seems to get her. I'm not sure how a goalie practices that? Find some wii game where you insert your self into a pinball machine? Anyway, it's important to have her playing well at this time of year when offense can be tough to find.

Apparently, they decided the the correct answer was, "Both." They scored more goals (7) this weekend than the other three teams did combined (6).

The Tunnelers put together a nice weekend and played up to their potential against the Yuckeyes. Although, the Yuckeyes looked gassed to me for much of this game.

Very nice for the 5th year players to finally get a WCHA playoff title.

Maybe that blind squirrel is gaining it's sight back and is finding more nuts.

I didn't feel this way, but OSU spent significant stretches of the semi against Wisconsin using only the top two lines. Combined with Jenna Buglioni being out of the lineup, that may have caused problems today.

Then again, I thought Brad Frost leaned too heavily on the first line in the third period today, so maybe both teams were gassed.

FYP.

When coaches aren't used to playing with TV timeouts, they often fall into a trap of using their top line an extra time coming out of an ad break. The line is "rested" in terms of recovery time after the previous shift, but by the end of the game, if they've played say eight additional shifts, that's going to take some toll on the legs. Maybe he was trying to match lines and reacted to what Muzzy was doing. Heise's line seemed tired at the very end when they got stuck in their end defending 6-on-5. Other than that, most of their problems were in the first 5 minutes of the game.

It also became clear that Frost didn't have any confidence that Huber could win an important face-off down the stretch, with some justification. In one instance, Murphy took, and lost, a defensive zone draw, and in at least one case, sent Heise out with Zumwinkle and Murphy.

I agree on the thumbs up on the article.

In an unrelated, random thought, I thought that the consistent back pressure for the Gophers last weekend was better than I remember seeing from them for years.

Good read! Thanks for posting.

Very eye opening what she said about Frost...

As fans, we tend to hyper-focus on results that happen on the ice but it is a good reminder as to the kind of a person he is off the ice, where she expresses the fact that he is someone she feels she can talk to about what is going on with her, good or bad.

And you would hope that all players would feel the same about their coaches. Unfortunately, that is not the case everywhere.

Off the top of my head I can think of one well-publicized example. ; )
