Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013 Part II: Mmmm, Iron City Beer!

The way it is shaking out so far it looks like if Michigan wins we get them, if they lose we get Yale or Canisius, probably Yale. That's crazy stuff.

Want to know what's really crazy?
It's quite possible UND will be sent east to a regional with Quinnipiac, Niagra and Canisius

EDIT: UND or DU

My biggest concern for the regional won't be effort because we saw what happened against UND in the WCHA FF last year, but rather having Isackson on the first line, recent poor play by Parenteau (I know a lot of guys had a bad game last night but is play has been poor for a few weeks) and I wonder if Condon is languishing on the 3rd. Although I love seeing him at center rather than wing.

I truly believe this team will not lay an egg going forward and will have to be beat by solid, dedicated play.

Don't know that I agree with Parenteau comment. He had one of the best defensive plays last night with the diving swat at the puck to take away a chance. He had a couple other plays he broke up with hustle that I wasn't seeing out of a lot of them. Isaakson, on the other hand, held the puck too long a few different times, including a couple times trying to carry it out of the zone when he was one of the last guys back, almost costing them. And I wish he could skate better. Great hands, but looks like his feet are in slow motion.

I was giving the Big Ten a shot but now I hear the shootout thing... Wow.

I'm hating this league more and more. I am sure the BTN said shootouts were cool, and made good TV, so if the schools want their millions, they better add shootouts!

So when is the Mich/ND game, and when do brackets come out?

He also was one of the guys directly responsible for the first goal. He had a number of passes picked off or misfired, and a couple bad decisions in pinching that led to dicey situations, although none of them resulted in a goal.
I've been a huge Parenteau supporter, but he did not look good last night and he has been making some mistakes the past month or so that I would not have expected from him.

It will be interesting to see how the line-up shakes out that first game of the NCAAs. Like others, I didn't really care for the line combos against CC. I'd like to blame the loss on it, but that's silliness. That train wreck of a 5-min PP was all the evidence needed to show that the "big guys" were not present the way they needed to be to give MN a chance to win.

I think my biggest complaint with the line-up, though, was Serratore being moved off of that 4th line. He plays hard, and he plays well, so I can understand the temptation to move him up. But that 4th line of Serratore-Michaelson-Holl has been such a spark plug for the Gophers. It wasn't the same against CC.
Those 3 have really struck a chord chewing up the opposition's bottom couple of lines. I'd like to see them stay together and continue that.

Agree with this. I like JP in general, but he's not been playing his best of late.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013 Part II: Mmmm, Iron City Beer!

If there's one major complaint I'd log against the Gopher coaching staff is there are far too many line changes this time of year. I understand the effort to form favorable matchups against opponents, but at this stage of the season: 1) with the added tension of the postseason, tweeking lines by continually shuttling in a different winger on the first line can be more detrimental to scoring than helpful, and 2) refined line chemistry is typically more consistent when line mates consistently stay together.

I can't remember, but did Don do any of this tomfoolery during the Natty years? Or did he mind his own business and let them gel and play?

I had this discussion about 3-4 years ago with Hammy. Lucia did make the typical changes and tweeks early in the season. But I found some archival evidence on lineups and the answer is "no", the lines were basically set in concrete much earlier than what we've seen in recent seasons.

Gurrrr... Not to compare apples and grapes, but that does not give me confidence in this long rough journey we are about to embark on if his perception of the team is that he still feels the need to mess with it.

If you're really worried about it head over to CollegeHockeyStats and run through the schedules of all the national champs. Let us know what you find. :)

Obviously, Lucia still doesn't feel 100% comfortable with any recent combos on the first line. Rau's scoring has been down (2 goals/17 games), so Lucia brought Condon in a few games ago as scoring threat and setup guy. Then Condon hit a scoring slump and now has only 2 pts./8 games. So Lucia brought Isackson in, who had a little spark early in the season, but only short lived. Budish has also played up, which would be my consistent choice on that 1st line...lock it in. He's gets my vote as the most improved player over last season.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013 Part II: Mmmm, Iron City Beer!

I'm willing to wager that with the #2 being locked up a bit ago that Lucia has been switching things up just throw opponents off the trail. He's won consistently for decades for a reason and trust he'll have the right lineup for Grand Rapids.

I like Notre Dame for the CCHA championship. The Ugly Helmets have staged a bit of a run lately, but Notre Dame has also found their stride and defensively, they're extremely solid.

The projected bracket if ND wins sure looks easier on paper given the recent play of some of the teams, so I am pulling for ND, but at the same time, If the Gophers fail to show up again, it won't matter which bracket they are in.

I acknowledge he had some bad plays too. I wasn't saying I thought he had a good game, just countering the first claim that seemed to be shouldering him with a lot of the blame for the loss. While he made a couple uncharacteristic poor decisions that were noticeable, most players on the team seemed to be mis-firing on passes and out of synch. And he showed more hustle than a lot of the players on the team (at least he stood out for that in the first half the game). The diving play, a couple times he attacked the puck in their own end when other players seemed to be standing around waiting for it to come to them, and in a couple times he seemed to be trying to get the puck to the net when a lot of the other players didn't seem to have that drive. I guess what I am getting at is he made some bad plays but the effort was there for most of the game. The worst part about that game was the lack of effort. So to me, it is all the players who weren't giving it their all that deserve more of the blame.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013 Part II: Mmmm, Iron City Beer!

I actually wouldn't mind if Michigan won today and was our opponent, I think we match up well and play our best when playing against teams like Michigan. The up and down the rink style is much better for us imo, the sit back and trap style gives us fits. Either way Yale or Michigan bring 'em on!

This is what I wrote:

I didn't single him out for the CC game and moreso I was referring to his overall play prior to just that game.
