does playing in a mid-year exhibition game burn a year of eligibility? wondering if christian horn is red shirting or if this is going to burn a year off his college career?
Mario Lucia said via e-mail going to Notre Dame is a, "chance for me to get out from my dad's shadow and start my own path. I just feel it's best for me to establish myself without any concern about who my dad is."
Um, didn't his dad play at Notre Dame? At least he had some easy stats for Mario to overshadow![]()
Yup. His dad played D when ND sucked. I'm sure a high end forward on a top team will score more points than a solid D on a crappy team ever did.![]()
Don't you dare try this kind of reasoning over on GPL!!!Given the potential for a conflict of interest and public perceptibility of favoritism in the Gopher locker room, Mario's call to attend Notre Dame was the right decision. Both Don Lucia and Mike Guentzel openly expressed in the past the difficulty of maintaining objectivity and dispelling rumors of favoritism in coaching their sons Tony and Gabe at the college level.
IMO Mario is much more of a true goal scorer than Tony was, which complicates matters a bit more as well. Don Lucia is much better off just being his dad.

I may have my history wrong, but I don't think they played in "Mariucci" back then. The Mariucci of today has only been open something like 20 years and before that they played in a rink named after someone else that eventually was renamed "Mariucci," but well after Don Lucia graduated (and maybe even when ND didn't have a league-affiliated D1 program)......By that time I was already a Gopher season ticket holder so I had mixed emotions when Notre Dame came to Mariucci, ...

Well, you're somewhat correct in that the old arena was named "Williams Arena" - together with the basketball side of the building - when Lucia was a player. The hockey side of the building remained "Williams" until it was re-named "Mariucci Arena" (in honor of John Mariucci) in 1985. But most everyone today remembers it as "the old Mariucci"! They moved to the "new Mariucci" in 1993.
If you don't remember the old place check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIcyI5yx1jI
My season tickets were located in the first row (#18) right above the opening where the Zamboni came out, at center ice on the opposite side of the players benches. Fun times!![]()
I still refer to it as Williams and always will.
I think Hobey is the only one there that was openly critical of Mario not coming to UM, but if not he was in the vast minority.![]()
Hobey also thinks that BC totally dominated the Gophs in the first period.
Great Video, thanks for posting......dodging the Zamboni in the concourse between periods.
Our seats were one section over from where the video starts. We could watch the the overhead guy write the league scores on the screen for the press box and before they announced them. Our little area would alway cheer when a favorable score was posted - high tech times.
First couple of minutes, yes, but after that not so much!
There were a couple others on the Mario deal, but Hobey is pretty much the only one saying BC outplayed the Gophers and it is getting really old...I think Hobey is the only one there that was openly critical of Mario not coming to UM, but if not he was in the vast minority.![]()
I was rarely on this side. First year I went, my brother had seats in 1st row of balcony across from video. Instead of clapping, one would kick the boards of the wall to make more noice. That usually lead to seeing a little daylight between the wall and the floor, which made you wonder how hard you should kick. When I went to Grad school, had seats in the "NE" section when 'what's his name' was Goldie, the ultimate in a mascot getting a crowd fired up. Things were so much loader then, compared to the corporate seating/TV timeout games of today. Then sat a couple seats behind the bench in the "MIN" section. That really stunk after the first period.
I also got to skate on the ice for intramural games, so can say I scored goals in the barn.
Those were some great times!
