Also of importance to note:
This could have a significant impact on whether Haula and Condon are back for their Senior seasons.
Condon is already four years out from his draft and Haula can pick a team this summer then?

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

I know it's always the talk of the college hockey poll/pohls/poles, but I was commenting to my friends last night before the game how interesting it is to (currently) be a middle of the pack WCHA team, but be the #1 team in the nation and #6 in PWR(before the game). That truly shows how worthless the polls are in the grand scheme of college hockey. Looking forward to a full slate of WCHA games from here on out!

So to follow your line of reasoning, polls are not accurate so the Gophers are more like a middle of the pack team in a conference than they are like a number one team in the country.
I disagree. I'll lean towards the polls being a more accurate reflection in this case.
PWR and a mid-season record is based on teams playing against a number of different teams with different levels of ability, and in this case, different number of games) so nothing is a perfect indicator of a team's ability at this point of the season. I just don't think I can be convinced that the teams above them in WCHA standings are better.

Furthermore (to reply to my own message), one of the problems with polls/pohls/poles is that they often rank teams that haven't played each other, so are less accurate. But in this case, MN beat a couple of the best teams in the country in convincing fashion. Once again, I think the polls are more accurate in this case than conference standings for showing the ability of this team.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

I understand your point as it applies to the Gophers, in this case. However, there are teams like Cornell, for example, who are ranked in the top 20 in the nation according to the poll(#15 in this case) but are not even top 20 in the PWR. How does that reflect accuracy? If the season ended today, Cornell, a top 15 team according to the poll, would not make the tournament.

Simple Math (R)

that's the key right there. But the season doesn't end today so worrying too much about pohls/poles/polls is way too much math, which leads to more unnecessary stress.

Seems we go through this explanation every year.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

Seems Wooger's been reading my posts. Before the ND game, he said he would try Rau at Center if he were coach, which of course would move Bjugs to Powerforward Wing.

Tomorrow night would be a good time to try it. That line wasn't at their best against ND, plus they have UAA at home, a game they should win regardless of which one is at center.

The argument against is why make any changes now, when they've been winning?

?

I hope they go that way. Bjugstad would look like Gulliver in Lilliput facing off against Grimaldi.

A Through These Doors episode, I know it is a UND production, but around the 6 minute mark there is a section about how all of the college players from the Twin Cities get together and play pickup games over Christmas break. Bjugstad has about a 30 second interview beginning at the 8:40 mark. I thought at least that section might be of interest to some of you.

Despite the fact that the actual 1st place team in the conference is the only team that's beaten you in your own building all season? The only game you've lost, as well this season, that you scored first in?

Looked like a couple pretty evenly matched teams to me. I begrudgingly give you the edge on the power play and in goal right now, but, the season isn't over, either.

When Searfoss scored with 2:02 left on Saturday night in our 3-2 loss we could hear sphincters puckering in Mariucci all the way down here in Omaha.

You might have the better team when it's all said and done but I think some of it just might be that Coach Blais just knows how to play a game against a Lucia coached team.

Does anybody know what the all time Blais vs. Lucia record is? I don't. And, my impression about their head-to-head has been formulated since we joined the WCHA, only.

I've seen the Gophers play many times on the tube this year so far and the best performances by any of your opponents against you I have seen this this season has been by us with apologies to Mankato. I did not see those particular games. I also did see the Tech series, but we swept them in their own building right after you split with them and they aren't really a factor in this conversation as they are in 11th place.

Even if you win the two games in hand right now that would only earn you a tie for first. UNO and Mankato have 2 of the easiest 3 schedules remaining in the WCHA (AA is the other). We only have 4 games left with teams that are even tucs right now. Two of those are this weekend.

If we come out of this weekend still in first, I really like our chances. The defense needs to stiffen up some. That's my only real concern.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

Settle down. He didn't say he expected the Gophers to win the WCHA, he said he doesn't believe the current standings in the conference are necessarily indicative of his perceived strength of each team. Congrats on your early season win in Minneapolis.

BUT UNO! RESPECT! ;)

MN will be just fine, and they are a top team (if not THE top team) in the nation.

I might not ever get a chance to write those words again so forgive us if we are basking in the glory of it all.;).

16 seasons to finally matter in a conference race for the first time.............UNO fans are a little punch drunk, me included, which I am certain you guys find very amusing and, that's O.K., I understand that. I would too if if I were in your shoes since our program has never had any sort of history of real success, ever. It's hard to act like you have "been" when you never have. It can be tough to post in another conference teammate's thread and extol whatever virtues we might have since every team in the conference can laugh in our face from any sort of legacy standpoint. We don't have one.:)

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

Why is it that you if you even step foot out of your own team's thread other posters give you negative rep? Apparently honest, respectful discussion is only okay if you're a fan of that team.

Welcome to the WCHA and congrats for snearing Blais. Those two factors have played very well for you in terms of recruits like Walters, etc. Yet its hard to say what the future holds in your new conference. I still maintain that UNO and its new conference mates are smart/lucky to have retained UMD and SCSU.
