Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

tDon was on with Russo this afternoon and said Haula should only be out a few weeks (3 games). He expects him back by the UND series. He also said they haven't made a decision on whether or not to rest Mike Reilly, but sounded like he's leaning towards resting him.

Good news, minor injury.:) Having Haula rested, cocked and loaded for the UND series is huge...the grand finale of one of the best WCHA regular season rivalries evah. I must admit I'm going to miss the UND series the most.

Good decision on resting Reilly. Guys have struggled with fatigue in the past seasons coming off the WJC, but the Gophers couldn't afford to rest them from jumping back in the lineup. With the depth on D, we have that luxury this season.

Agreed on all accounts.

That 2nd goal by Bjugs was just amazing, great highlights in this video.

We are ALL going to miss the UND series the most. I am trying not to think about so the pain will go away. ;)

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

What was the point of agreeing to this Tuesday game, which was supposedly agreed upon to let the WJC guys rest/recover, and not playing those guys then?

the short answer- don wanted to coach opposite his son

and not to nit-pick the "haula will be back for north dakota" comment.. but it should be noted that lucia said haula is week-to-week, they expect him to miss the next 2.5 weeks for sure and he hoped haula might be available around the north dakota series

fly on the wall?

no.. just a guess

its also possible the coaches thought they would be missing more than one a piece (maybe don thought boyd and skjei would also make the team)...

Well, Don did tell Russo today that part of the reason we're playing Notre Dame in the first place is because Mario is there, so it wasn't too off the wall to suggest that the decision to push the game back was at least partially related to Mario.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

Predictions on how the Gopher fans will react when Mario is introduced? (assuming he starts)

a. Loud cheering
b. Loud booing
c. Minnesota nice - polite clapping mostly
d. Mixed...some of everything

I don't think there would be more than a smattering of boos, if any. At least I hope not.

d. But the most common of the three by far will be c. There will of course be some *******s who boo but should be drowned out pretty easily.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

With Haula out (for a few games) what do people think of the idea of putting Mike Reilly in his spot as a 2nd line center (or wing)? I think it would be interesting to see, yes he is a skilled D man but we do have guys who can play back there already. Why not throw him up there and see what he can do, he is a silky smooth skater and has great hands and vision. That way we could keep Condon up on the first line with Bjugs and Rau and we could keep the 3rd line in tact as well.

Probably C, I don't see the UM fans raising a stink over Mario playing for ND but what if Mario slams a couple home in a ND win?

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

There are a select few who are ready to hang Lucia for not bringing Mario to the U. Other than that, I think people will be Minnesota nice toward Mario.

Given the potential for a conflict of interest and public perceptibility of favoritism in the Gopher locker room, Mario's call to attend Notre Dame was the right decision. Both Don Lucia and Mike Guentzel openly expressed in the past the difficulty of maintaining objectivity and dispelling rumors of favoritism in coaching their sons Tony and Gabe at the college level.

Mario Lucia said via e-mail going to Notre Dame is a, "chance for me to get out from my dad's shadow and start my own path. I just feel it's best for me to establish myself without any concern about who my dad is."

IMO Mario is much more of a true goal scorer than Tony was, which complicates matters a bit more as well. Don Lucia is much better off just being his dad.

"So what is best for him? There is more that goes into it because he is a different player than Tony," Don Lucia said. "There is a lot to that," Don Lucia said on Wednesday. "Part of me wants to be his dad, not his coach. For him a lot goes into [his decision]. He is a different type of player. There are a lot of dynamics that go into your locker room. It is one thing if you are a coach’s son killing penalties, it is another issue if you are the coach’s son on the power play."

Not what I'd do. Most importantly he's heir to the Schmidt and #10. We want him as polished on point by play off time as possible.

I'd rather see a more experienced D who can skate well and doesn't have such a critical future of development ahead of them. My 2 cents.
