Minnesota Gopher women's hockey off season thread for summer 2014

Re: Minnesota Gopher women's hockey off season thread for summer 2014

Why Piazza? Almost everyone else has a clear statistics trail, I haven't been able to find any anything serious on her. In my book, she's kind of a big question mark.

As D2D says I think you will be pleasantly surprised with Piazza. She is probably the fastest skater of the incoming Minnesota freshmen and if you dig a little bit into the Chicago Mission data (She was with them for 7 years) that will help.

96IllinoisDad had this to say about Piazza:
Piazza is the best Mission player since Coyne/Bozek (and at their level). If she is on the 4th line, I'm petitioning the NCAA/WCHA for a supplemental draft to reallocate UM's bench players.

Not my question. I sense your of the opinion that it is not possible for outside activities to cause a serious distraction regardless of their number.

I think he's actually saying that the effect could be good, it could be bad, and we'll never really know one way or the other no matter what happens during the season, even though either could be cited as an excuse for the results.

Good lord, I'm defending pokechecker. Grant! Help!

I've watched the Minnesota kids previously, so I know what to expect. I may have seen Piazza as well as part of the U-18 series with Canada a couple of years ago, but at the time, I didn't know to watch her specifically, so I don't remember anything. I'd never seen Kelly Terry before she became a Gopher, and I never had reason to be disappointed, so unfamiliar doesn't necessarily equate to dubious. Anyway, she was the subject of the link posted, so that's a good reason why. :)

I trust the word of Boz the connoisseur of fine bacon cuisine per the talent of Miss Piazza. That word is very positive.

Grant can't help you, he can't help himself

on the US 2013 U18 team, 6 of the forwards are now Gophers, including Piazza
add their older team mates,
it should be another interesting year on offense despite the loss of the seniors who graduated

From Shooter's column this past Sunday:

Krissy Wendell Pohl will co-host a half-hour Minnesota prep sports show with Tori Holt at 11 p.m. Saturdays on KSTC Ch. 45.

When we get closer to the start of this, like within a week, remind me to set up the DVR to record it. Thanks.

I also see where her high school team (Cretin-Derham Hall) was selected to play in the "Hockey Day in Minnesota" girl's game on January 17th. Their opponent will be the Duluth Northern Stars.

Lastly on the subject of Krissy Wendell, she's still playing hockey in the local recreational league, called the Women's Hockey Association of Minnesota (WHAM). Her "McGovern" team looks pretty decent too, with mostly former D1 players from the area including recent Gopher grad Becky Kortum.

Haley Skarupa should transfer to Minnesota and play on a line next year with Hannah Brandt and Dani Cameranesi.
They do click well together, don't they? Unfortunately, I doubt we even see that much of Brandt and Cameranesi together, because I think they'll both be needed at center. But who knows? Sometimes things unfold differently than we'd expect, so a different candidate could emerge in the middle. For example, I thought Terry did a great job for her first year and a half at wing, but she clearly was an even better fit at C. I've never thought of Menefee as being center material, but when Brandt was injured in the final game in Madison and 14 moved to the middle, she looked very solid in that role.
