Minnesota Gopher women's hockey off season thread for summer 2014

Re: Minnesota Gopher women's hockey off season thread for summer 2014

I feared this possibility while reading the news of a concussion recently...in addition to her previous injury situation. So unfortunate for her and her Gopher teammates.

Now I hope Amanda can, and does progress to a symptom free life.

All the best wishes. Amanda has won the hearts of fans the way few can.

Rachel Ramsey has a "C" on her jersey during picture day.

Updated StarTribune article on #8 offers some hope for 2015-16:

"I’ve had an unforgettable experience at the University of Minnesota thus far, so I’m disappointed that I won’t be able to return to the team this year,” Kessel said in a statement.

“My No. 1 priority is my health, and I hope that I’ll be able to return to the ice in the future. I want to thank my coaches, teammates and everyone at the university for their support.”

Kessel would need to request a waiver from the NCAA to play next season if healthy and would be a likely candidate to compete for the U.S. national team in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

yes, Brooky may be a bit premature in beginning to write her obituary in a Gopher or any hockey uniform.

This is disappointing news; I was really looking forward to watching her play this year.

Seconded, I kept having visions of her on a line with Hannah Brandt and being practically unstoppable.

Now, I'm getting ready to start thinking about them being seniors together and Ms Kessel being more healthy for her senior year next year than she's been for a long time!!

The Kessel deal is a big bummer overall for women's college hockey. UW lost top end D Stephanie McKeough to concussions her Jr year and she never did get back on the ice. It was a sad deal indeed. I am relieved and even a little happy UW will not have to face her, but it's too bad it had to happen like this (vs her just graduating).

I think whoever plays on a line with Brandt benefits. We saw a small sampling of a dynamic line comprised of Brandt, Cameranesi, Skarupa with the U22 team. Brandt and Cameranesi with Bona or Menefee could be very good.

maybe it's just me, but it would be my guess that at least 2 of those players will be centers this coming year, and it wouldn't surprise me if all 3 were, so except on the power play, that isn't going to happen.

...and it seems to me a year ago the conversation in this thread and the WCHA thread was "woa is the Gophers, what will they do without Kessel" Brandt won't be able to score without her

I agree with this as well. I think Brandt is a great shooter, but an even better passer.

I wonder if Piazza may be a candidate to play center. What do you think 96IllinoisDad, is she a good skater?....backchecker?....have good vision on the ice??

Re: Minnesota Gopher women's hockey off season thread for summer 2014

She played center a lot at mission. Piazza is a phenomenal skater. Tremendous 1st and 2nd step acceleration. Relentless back checker. Vision - remains to be seen at UM. At Mission she was asked to score, but she is a smart hockey player. On team USA, she passed more than I saw at Mission.

If she needs to improve on anything it is beefing up to survive the way she plays.

Thanks for the report!

I certainly don't know how the freshman are going to do, but for some reason I'm particularly hopeful Piazza and Baldwin will be good almost right out of the box and make significant contributions.

Meghan Lorence has an "A" on her jersey.

Pannek should be up there also. She appears to be a totally wired competitor.

The flip side, so to speak, is Brittney Ammerman, who also had to take pretty much a full year off but - knock wood - has made a full recovery.

Wishing (Madison kid) Amanda a quick and full recovery.
