Minnesota Gopher women's hockey off season thread for summer 2014

Re: Minnesota Gopher women's hockey off season thread for summer 2014

Interesting that the women's team has garnered some recent posts on the Men's Forum (Minnesota Gophers Offseason Thread 2014 - Quick, Reload!). High expectations for both Gopher teams this season!

The comment was made that this coming year has the "potential" to be even better than the 2012/2013 undefeated team. This coming season should see a very deep roster with a lot of forward depth but this years team will not have the best goaltender like Raty or the best defenseman like Bozek. FWIW, I think this team has the potential to come close to last years record with maybe 2 or 3 regular season losses (due to Wisconsin being better). Should be a frozen four team with a good shot to win the national title.

Realistically we all know that the result of a given hockey game can be fluky or lucky/unlucky or whatever you want to call it. As great as the Gopher teams were in setting "The Streak" - D1's all-time record - they had any number of close calls during that stretch that could have easily gone the other way. There would be no point in this season's team to even think about breaking any win records; they should focus on doing all the things they need to do to keep getting better throughout the year, so they're as ready as they can be at the end when it counts the most. I believe Coach Frost refers to it as "The Process" which is exactly what it is.

Of course it could be better. This year's team could go 42-0-0.

made me look at the schedule, I am assuming the extra game against SCSU is not counted in the WCHA standings.

So how good/dominating was the 2012/13 team?
Compare the ratio of goals scored to goals given up for each player while on the ice (PP not included). Most players either stayed about the same or dropped significantly.

15/7 6.1-9.2
18 !!!-6.4 !!!= the number cannot be defined, no goals given up
14 14- 5.5
13 4.3- 5.5
9 7-5.4
20 4.8- 5.5
22 10.6-4
27 12-3.4
10 3.3- 3.4
5 10.2-3.2
17 5-2.8
16 4.1-2.3
8 9.9
7 8.6
19 8.6
4 8.6

maybe it would be simpler to say they scored 7.5 goals for every one the opponent did (non PP) compared to 3.6 last year.

Before moving on to the next freshman intro...mostly I hope Pannek is not shy about shooting the puck, and in fact develops a confidence and aggressiveness early in that regard no matter who she plays with. Shooting appears to be her most prominent skill from my limited exposure. That exposure being a handful of high school post season games. Far fewer than some of my west metro GWH fan associates. They can tell me if I'm wrong about this. Appears she can score from nearly anywhere in the offensive zone. Good hands, quick release and the ability to put it where she wants. So, even if playing with more experienced and high caliber linemates my hope is she is not overly passive in deference to those linemates and lets it rip when she has the shot.

I think we've seen with many a great HS player than many of the shots that went in in HS don't go in in college. I agree that players can't be passive and reluctant to shoot. I haven't watched her in person enough to have a first-hand clue, but Frost speaks as though one of Pannek's talents is to be able to see the game at a high level similar to the Darwitz, Kessel, and Brandt types. Not saying she's at that level, but I'd expect her to be at least as likely to set up as to finish.

I was going to mention "sees the ice" as her greatest strength also...like she knows where everyone else is without looking and where the puck is going to go next. And from what I've seen she's every bit as good a playmaker as she is a finisher. I do think she would be more effective sooner if Coach Frost puts her at center, the position she's always played and where she could better use her creativity. She's also very good at winning faceoffs.

Her biggest adjustment to the D1 level - one that all high schoolers must make - will be to the speed of the game. At times she will seem too deliberate in what she's doing, and against most high school competition she would almost always get away with it and make something great happen. But against the better D1 opponents she will definitely need to pick up the pace, something that I believe she will do if only because of her obvious athletic ability. It will be interesting to watch her develop and see how Coach Frost uses her as the season progresses.

P.S. I'm also really looking forward to seeing the other freshmen - Piazza, Baldwin and Rodgers - wearing the Maroon and Gold! And how much ice time will redshirt freshman Sidney Peters likely get to start the season?

Good news is that Pannek appears to be one of those that is instinctively driven. See her foray into soccer.

Does anybody know the benefits of subscribing to Gophers All Access vs CBS digital network vs cbssports.com uive if you want to see all the GWH games? What do you get with these various subscriptions?

Re: Minnesota Gopher women's hockey off season thread for summer 2014

Can coaches and players be too busy? As in not focusing enough on getting prepared for the upcoming season?

are you the person that said going to the white house was a bad idea and that they should stay home and prepare for BU?

if GWH attains their goals, these experiences can be cited as contributing to their success

if they fail to attain them, we can blame it on these preseason activities, they should have been more concerned about the coming season ;)

Re: Minnesota Gopher women's hockey off season thread for summer 2014

Very, very much looking forward to seeing Piazza on the ice.

Me too! As with fellow forwards Pannek and Rodgers, can't wait to see how the coaches fit them in and follow their development as they gain experience at the D1 level.

Not my question. I sense your of the opinion that it is not possible for outside activities to cause a serious distraction regardless of their number.

Why Piazza? Almost everyone else has a clear statistics trail, I haven't been able to find any anything serious on her. In my book, she's kind of a big question mark.

We'll get our first look at all the freshmen in seven short weeks, and I have a hunch that you'll be pleasantly surprised with Miss Piazza!
