Minnesota Golden Gophers Season Thread 2017-18 Part II

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers Season Thread 2017-18 Part II

We wouldn’t be 15th or 16th. We’d be 12th-14th. I highly recommend Dahl’s blog post. He gives all of the percentages for each seed.

Even then, there aren’t a lot of teams who would say, “Yeah, as a one seed we definitely want to play Minnesota.”

While I agree with this, I can't say there are some teams who are scared of us.

We'll probably play Cornell if we get in. I don't think SCSU, Notre Dame, or OSU would have been scared at all.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers Season Thread 2017-18 Part II

I see that former assistant and now head coach at Northern Michigan Grant Potulny just won the WCHA's Coach of the Year award. Not saying that this makes him the front-runner if Minnesota does decide to make a change, but I would think he would at least be a candidate deserving of some consideration.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers Season Thread 2017-18 Part II

The only one year of HC experience is what's scary.

As bad as this sounds, after we pick the next guy, maybe it's something where if it doesn't pan out we plan to go for Grant in a few years. Guessing the U would be his preferred destination.

Give Bob M four years and see where we're at. ;)

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers Season Thread 2017-18 Part II

I'd be all for G$ but I'd have to think with the lack of experience as a head coach, not just an assistant, it's not going to happen. The early success is fantastic to see, albeit in a lesser conference. And let's be honest, no offense to Tech or to take anything away from NMU, but if Northern Michigan makes the NCAAs they will not have had to beat the consensus best team in their conference to do it. It's not NMU's fault that Kato didn't hold up their end of the bargain in the conference tourney, but I could see that being used as kind of an asterisk against Potulny.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers Season Thread 2017-18 Part II

I am because dx is acting like Mel Pearson is a perfect parallel to Bob Motzko despite the fact that Motzko coached at the U of M for 4 seasons and Pearson was at Michigan for 23. And Pearson had 6 years at the helm of Tech vs. 13 for Bob at SCSU. And Pearson was coaching in a conference where you can win the regular season title and still miss the NCAA tournament vs. being in the best conference in college hockey that can get 5-6 teams into the tournament. I am glad our coach is in demand and understand there is a possibility he leaves. It's just funny after all the years of derision from Gopher fans about our program being dogcrap, they now want our coach and some of them are delusional enough to think it's a sure thing.
Sorry, I'm late to this one. But hey, if the U comes calling and Motzko bails maybe you can hang a banner at the Concrete Center next to the participation banners? "Gophers Stole Our Coach 2018" ;)

FTR, who is calling your program 'dogcrap'? Anyone wearing maroon and gold can't really say that with a straight face.....

I don't think he is saying it happened recently. But 5 to 10 years ago anything we mentioned we were proud of kind of got poo-poo'ed

You've been on this board since March of 2008 and you are asking that question "with a straight face"? This has been going on since I have been on this board, and I bet I can go over to GPL and find posts from THIS YEAR, probably even one from you, ripping on our program.

I sense snow in the forecast.

I'll admit, I missed the 'all the years of derision' part of your post. However, I have said nothing negative of your squad this year that I can think as it pertains to on the ice results. And I'll also admit that all of the SCSU hockey I've watched this year, outside of the Gophers series, took place this past weekend in the playoff series against Miami.......since my team wasn't playing.:(

When our teams were both in the same awesome conference and were bitter rivals, that is what one did on this board. That was part of the rivalry. Rip on the fans and programs of the rivals (unless it was the beavers, then you made as many innuendo jokes about beavers as you could before the thread was shut down. Oh I miss those days....) To pretend it only went one way, directed only at your school, is no more honest.

Whoever came up with "can't spell SUCKS without SCSU" should get an award. I still use that on a buddy who played there. His wife likes it too. (She is a Gopher fan.)

I know all this. Just pointing out the irony.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers Season Thread 2017-18 Part II

Comparing CM’s output to Vanek’s is doing it wrong. It’d be almost as bad as comparing Gretzky’s output to anyone currently playing.

Depends on the IVs. :) Initially the comparison was made earlier in the season by the poster I was responding to, so I was summarizing. Secondly, there's a baseline correlation of both Vanek (#5) and Mittelstadt (#8) being 1st round picks of the Buffalo Sabres. On that basis it's a statistically valid comparison to look at the correlational variance in "hype" that each received prior to their freshman season and their subsequent season outcomes.

Prior to their arrival, I don't recall Vanek receiving as much fanfare as CM did. As I mentioned, the covariate here is Vanek played with a better team than CM during a high scoring era in college hockey so that would need to be controlled and adjusted for (no time for that). CM is a talented player and was projected by many to be the #1 FR in college hockey, but to my point his freshman season didn't highly correlate with the hype that preceded him.

For example, his season totals 11-19-30, were very similar to Tyler Sheehy's FR season (12-18-30), or Justin Kloos (16-16-32), Fasching (14-16-30) and Cammarata (10-17-27). Best FR seasons in the last 10 years belong to Jordan Schroeder/2008-09 (13-32-45) and Kyle Rau (3rd round Florida-2011 draft)/2011-12 (18-25-43). Like Mittelstadt, Schroeder was also a 1st round pick, however @ #22 with Vancouver. He was named WCHA rookie of the year.

Mittelstadt was recently chosen as one of the three finalists for the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award, but the conference office announced on Tuesday the award went to Mitchell Lewandowski (19-15-34) from the Spartans. Lewandowski finished his rookie year with a team-leading 19 goals, which was tied for the most in the Big Ten. He was also one of three Spartans to receive All-Big Ten honors despite their last place finish @ 6-16-2.

By way of contrast, no Gophers were named to either the first or second All-Big Ten teams this season (Sheehy and Lindgren were honorable mentions). SR Szmatula received the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

Regarding comparisons to Gretzky with a current player, someone just did that yesterday! :D ARTICLE

While the AD and Co. will evaluate the season and the coaching staff at the end of the season, it's been my opinion that Lucia will most likely sign a "conditional" short-term contract. Regarding a potential candidate Don Lucia would like to see replace him when the time arrives, he talked to the media about it last season at this time:

Lucia delegates more responsibility to his assistants now. Hockey circles have speculated for some time about who will or should succeed him when that time comes. Lucia hopes his longtime assistant Mike Guentzel gets the gig ... eventually.

"Mike has certainly paid his dues," Lucia said. "He'd be the logical one to take over. He's obviously someone that I would endorse. He's very passionate. He's knowledgeable. He was a former captain. If I could wave my magic wand, which I don't get to do, I think he's earned the right to get the next opportunity here." - Star Tribune. March 10, 2017.

Perhaps I'm a minority here, but since Motzko has taken over and they've upgraded their program I've enjoyed seeing SCSU progress over previous years. I think this may be their year for a Natty.

What have the Gophers done under Coach Lucia since then compared to other top coaches and programs over the previous 6 seasons (2011-12 to 2016-17)? (Corrections, adding BU, SCSU and all 6 previous National Champs).

LT: League Tournament, RS: Regular Season Title, FF: Frozen Four Appearance

1) York (BC) - W%/.675, 5 NCAA Appearances, 4 FF, 1 LT, 4 RS, 1 National Title
2) Hakstol/Berry (UND) - W%/.666, 6 NCAA Appearances, 3 FF, 1 LT, 2 RS, 1 National Title
3) Lucia (UMN) - W%/.657, 5 NCAA Appearances, 2 FF, 1 LT, 6 RS
4) Gwozdecky/Montgomery (DU) - W%/.642, 5 NCAA Appearances, 2 FF, 1 LT, 1 RS, 1 National Title
5) Leaman/Bennett (Union) - W%/.639, 4 NCAA Appearances, 2 FF, 3 LT, 3 RS, 1 National Title
6) Leaman (Providence) - W%/.608, 4 NCAA Appearances, 1 FF, 1 RS, 1 National Title
7) Parker/Quinn (BU) - W%/.585, 4 NCAA Appearances, 1 FF, 1 LT, 2 RS
8) Motzko (SCSU) - W%/.581, 4 NCAA Appearances, 1 FF, 1 LT, 2 RS
9) Allain (Yale) - W%/.578, 3 NCAA Appearances, 1 FF, 1 National Title
10) Sandelin (UMD) - W%/.577, 4 NCAA Appearances, 1 FF, 1 LT
11) Berenson (UMich) - W%/.570, 2 NCAA Appearances, 1 LT

Looking at the top 6 W% teams, every team has won a National Championship, except the Gophers. Yale stole that from us. ;) Ergo, the fanbase angst.

I thought that 2 years ago when they were the overall #2 seed and got upset by Ferris State in OT in the first round.

BTW, good stats on all those programs the last 6 seasons you posted. Pretty easy to see who has had the most success lately.

Indeed, one and done can be brutal. That team had a better W% than the current squad too. Thanks. :)
