Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010 the last year of the old WCHA

Positives:

Taylor Matson, buried two in transition, crashed the net for one, had occasional sustained forechecking, evidently have two pretty good goaltenders.

Negatives:

Can't hold a lead. Can't will a goal out of sustained pressure when it is desperately needed, still like to miss the net by 3' or more when shooting, and God only knows what Friday night was supposed to be about.

A long ways to go and 12 critical points coming up the next few weeks with 4 must have points against Anchorage.

*Gopher fans clamoring to get back on the wagon*
They got one point on the road in a series in which they were heavily outshot and often times outplayed. Their powerplay is a mess, their defense is stationary much of the time, and their passing is often horse****. The only redeeming quality of this team right now is the goaltending.

Matson and Hoeffel as well, Saturday night anyways.

Matson was out to prove something. His name came up a multitude of times.

He was flying around the ice like a man possessed. His set up on the shortie was nice. But he let Eidsness' stick block his shot on a sure goal on an open net. You have to get that donut off the ice and make that shot 10 out of 10!! COM'ON MAN!

Fairchild had the broadside of a barn to shoot at on another open netter and missed that too. COM'ON MAN!

I saw very little "going to the net". The majority of the shots were perimeter attempts and too many were off target. That's WHEN they decided to shoot. Shot attempts were 2-1 Sioux. COM'ON MAN!

:)

are you sure it isn't sue fans panicking, since a horrible team like the gophers couldn't even be beat at home?

Did you repress the result of an event that happened on Friday October 16th? Cause that 'horrible'(your words) Gopher team was beaten on that day. Sorry if that reminds you. ;):p

But hell, 3 out of 4 points? Better than being swept or having a split. Not as good as a sweep though :(

We'll see if they figure it out. The Sioux are the ones with all the freshmen and they are way ahead, however, last year it was the Gophers with all the freshmen and it was the first part of the year that they were really good and then it fell apart. We'll see.

The thing that bothers me is time and time again the last couple of years we've had these "teachable" moments without much change occuring afterwards. We have two pretty dang good goaltenders right now, TWO. It'd be a shame to waste that.

I am a little concerned with the pk too. That was a bright spot last year. Do I remember incorrectly in that I thought last year they played a pressure pk as opposed to forming a tight box that allows the pp team to pass around the perimeter at will?

If we're thinking of the same play, (I can't remember if it was him for sure - feed across to the right side of the net, 7 feet out and missed?) he was handcuffed by a pass that wasn't quite on causing the miss ( I can't picture it exactly but it seems like it was almost in his feet. I just remember as soon as the puck went wide, I knew the pass was the problem.) It seemed like a lot of their passes both nights were just off enough to throw off timing for the follow up pass or shot. I expect that will improve. It seemed worse on Friday, as often seems to be the case when a team isn't skating and trying to make longer passes. But there were still signs of it on Saturday, even when they were skating better.

I didn't really like having this series this early in the season. Neither team looked as sharp as I expect they will look by mid-season when one would expect to see a better played game, with more chances generated off skill plays and less off errors and miscues.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010 the last year of the old WCHA

So let me see if I got this straight...the Gophs looked rough in the first two games of the season on the road at their biggest rival and you are all surprised? The lines didnt click and the PK and PP stunk even though they had played a whole whopping 1 GAME TOGETHER previous to the trip? Yes I can see why everyone is so upset stupid gophers should have been clicking on all cylinders like it was the second half of the season and we were playing Tech!!!!11!!1! My lord the team didnt even make the NCAAs last year did you really think they were going to start off the season on fire?

Maybe my vision was clouded or my mind was mush from the retarded seating in the upperdeck at the Puke Arena but I liked what I saw a lot on Saturday and that seemed to be the consensus of the people that were there. Friday was horrible but the team rebounded and played 100% better the next night what more can you ask?

If you guys want to already concede the team is terrible that is fine but I would suggest then maybe not watching this year because I think you are going to be sorely mistaken.

BTW watching a game at the Puke Gardens Arena or whatever they call it is like watching a game at the X right down to the cheesy dance music and 80s hits and the fake "Fan o Meters"! They also have 3/4 of their fans sitting on their hands just like at Mariucci :D

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010 the last year of the old WCHA

Christ Handy, settle down. Where are the people saying that the season is over?

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010 the last year of the old WCHA

Oh please you read this thread you would think they lost in OT to Union...waaaah the pk was horrible...boohoo the PP passed liked crap...sniff sniff I am not getting back on the bandwagon yet...its two games in and people think this should be the 1980's Oilers by what they have said here! ;) Last year the Gophers got mauled twice in the Forks and put up no fight and this year they fought back and played BETTER the second night...that puts them 2 steps ahead of last year already.

Don't be Sioux fans, 2 games in October is nothing to get your panties in a bunch about especially on the road :D

Christ why am I the one being positive? (I wasnt Friday night but then again it was hard to be they played like Bantams out there  )

(note: In both my posts I am exaggerating for effect just so you know :p )

You're worse than Sioux fans. At least they wait about five games to call for Hakstol's head and they keep it on SiouxSports. After one game Gopher fans were calling for Lucia's head here, GPL and everywhere else.
