Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

But I'm posting this because Kessel added another 2 goals and 2 assists for a jaw-dropping 10-point weekend. :D

Amanda Kessel is unbelieveable. If anyone has the video of her first goal this afternoon (the team's 5th, which was the backbreaker for UND) please post it in this thread. Highlight material and then some!

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

The aforementioned penalty problems didn't help the Gophers quell UND's momentum until late. Got to get that resolved.

I love it when the Gophers play super hard and aggressive, and I understand that playing super hard and aggressive will result in some penalties. But there comes a point in some games, like the one today, when the smart play is to back off, just a little at the right time, and don't make sealing the deal any harder than it needs to be. Fortunately, the Gophers were able to rise to the occasion offensively today and overcome several errors in judgement, which they will hopefully learn from.

Also, I have to give kudos to North Dakota this weekend. They gave it everything they had, and forced the Gophers to dig really deep to get the wins...which I might add is typical in the WCHA, the best league in the nation, year in and year out.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

I mentioned in my weekend predictions in the WCHA thread that a Red Menace sweep of Ohio State would actually be in the Gophers' interest, and that came to bear.

The Buckeyes were dealt their 5th and 6th losses in conference play, so now the Gophers have a 6-game cushion in the loss column over everyone else in the WCHA with 12 games remaining in the regular season. Crazy...

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

Very exciting game this afternoon.

As was the case yesterday, the recap at the UND site of today's game gives an excellent non-Gopher perspective.

The collegehockeystats boxscore lists attendance of 2,703. I have been in attendance for each of the two games which were "official" sell-outs. I am quite comfortable in stating that the crowd tonight was the second largest number of people actually in the building for any of those particular three games and I am going to go ahead and list it in my personal archives as the second largest attendance in GWH at Ridder.

It was a great crowd and a very exciting hockey game.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

Thanks ARM and Taz for your comments. I knew about the 3 noms per team, and wasn't so much thinking that we would get 3 players in the top 3. I know how sports is sometimes as political as other things, which is a shame, but at the same time, its probably better for the growth of women's hockey to try to spread the wealth out abit.
I actually think that you are right ARM, about Nora, she probably won't get the credit she deserves because of the quality of players that are on the team. My post was more of a way of just saying that wow, we have a really good team this year. Been watching this team since the beginning, and at least as far as this topic is concerned, this year reminds me of when Wendell & Darwitz were playing. I do think that they both made it into the Top 3 at least one of the years they were playing together here. I don't see it happening this year though, partly because of what you said about the perception that will hurt Nora, but it also seems that Goalies rarely get POY recognition, so that is kind of 2 strikes against her. It's too bad. But my guess is that they know back in Finland just how good she is.
But it does seem like Kessel, at the rate she is going, will be hard to ignore this year.
As for the whole Olympics question, that also reminds me of back when Darwitz and Wendell played for us, and they went off to the Olympics and we had a season with a lot of new young players that Olympic season, and it was actually a pretty good season for the Gophers. So it will be interesting to see how everything works out the rest of this season and the next 2 seasons after this one. I think its a dang good time to be a Gopher fan, that's for sure.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

Interesting that the 2014 Olympics were brought up. As I watched the team this weekend (great wins, btw. Good to have some adversity, but still get the wins), I was thinking about how different they might look next year. I would think Kessel & Brandt would have to be locks to be on the team along with Bozek, but she will have graduated. There are three from the D that could go with McMillen and Stecklein probably having a better chance than Ramsey. Ramsey wasn't named to the recent Winter Training Camp in December but the other two were with McMillen also being on the Four Nations roster this fall. The D (and maybe whole US roster) will probably look similar to the World Championship roster from last spring.

So, my guess is the team loses two with a slim chance at losing three next year to the Olympics.

Although I dont have direct information (so take it for what it's worth) I heard Ramsey was invited and passed ...which then opened the spot for Stecklin.

Probably a safe guess given the coach. The team will most likley have a Crimson feel to it.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

I went to the Saturday game and it was my first women's game in about 5 years, and all I can say is WOW! I was amazed at how much faster the game has gotten, and how the skill level and intensity has increased - not to mention the speed of the slapshots.

It was a very entertaining game to watch and I think the Men's team could learn a few lessons about puck movement in the offensive zone from this group.

I will be back before another 5 years goes by.

This is off topic but seeing as how this is among the most popular threads thought I'd ask here -- what is Mercyhurst's status for NCAAs as far as bus vs. flight goes? I've somehow been under the assumption that they are a bus trip to the eastern teams but looking at past comments from past USCHO articles I think the threshold is 300 miles?

As far as I know, they are a flight to Boston, which seems to be the most pertinent question with three Boston teams in potential host spots in the PWR. Whether in practice they would fly or bus is another question; maybe somebody in the Mercyhurst thread would know what they've done in previous NCAA tourneys:

This is very possible, and would be an interesting decision on her part given how close it is getting to naming the next National team. But good for her for having a life outside of hockey.

Agree. Similar to the team having a Wisconsin feel to it when Mark Johnson coached the team and a big Minnesota presence when Herb Brooks coached the 1980 team.

over the past 4 years ALL games to Boston...Maine...Conn...Providence...etc have been flights for Mercyhurst usually to and from Pittsburgh.. 2 hour bus to/from Erie

Those prices were extraordinarily reasonable. Agganis in Boston was twice that and priced us right out of the building. It was a shame because we had planned on going.
Well, had you opted for less beer, pizza, and internet poker you'd have had no problem coming up with the coin. ;)
