Minnesota Golden Gopher Off Season 2011

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Off Season 2011

"A search for Darwitz’s replacement at the University of Minnesota will begin immediately."

Any thoughts on who they might (or should?) consider? I wonder if the position pays enough to attract a current qualified high school coach?
I think...and have thought for awhile that the pay issue is at least a partial cause of what I'd characterize as some instability at the assistant positions. Circumstances not exclusive to GWH by any means. I think that makes finding the right, truly quality person for an asst. position no easy task. They've always managed to hire good people in the past though. There are a handful in high school hockey I'd consider qualified, but I get the impression most of those coaches are pretty comfortable where they're at.

Edit: I'd be a big supporter of Slomo if it were a possibility...look how she's done at Edina. Her teams play great hockey and she seems to be an excellent motivator getting the most from her players and they always play well in the big games. She's also an example of one who I think is pretty happy with her current position. Don't see her leaving the Hornets.

It's difficult to recommend specific candidates without knowing them as people, but certainly based on her team's performance the past few years Slomo would seem to be a great choice. Then again, Edina has one of the top feeder programs in the state, and then there's that pay thing which could be an issue. If any high school pays their hockey coaches well, you have to believe that Edina ranks right up there.

Might look around behind those MIAC benches too.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Off Season 2011

Never say never but I would think that a teacher's salary plus coaching pay at Edina is better than an assistant coach's salary at Minnesota. There's always a lot of factors but why would Slomo want to be an assistant when she can be the head coach of a successful program even if its a high school program.
Since she vacated a D-I assistant position for the Edina job, I really don't see her doing a 180 and returning to an assistant position in division I. I think with more time and continued success in her present capacity it would be more likely someone from the college ranks comes knocking on her door in a search for a head coach...someday. That might be what it would take to have her leave the Hornets.

Many times in the past UM searches for assistants have resulted in surprise picks no one could have guessed. They've managed to hire quality people consistently. Hope they can do that again relatively soon.

Is Mr. Ramsey busy? :)

What about Krissy Wendell Pohl as the Assistant Coach?

Doubtful she would be interested since it was recently announced she will be assisting her husband John at Cretin-Derham Hall, a private high school in St. Paul. Not to say she would never change her mind, but I would guess it's unlikely for this year, especially since it's a husband/wife deal that you have to assume they're excited about!

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Off Season 2011

Any idea if the practices/scrimmages are open to the public up in Blaine?

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Off Season 2011

No Schleper -- she'd become somewhat of a fixture on recent teams.

Also has Darwitz announced her retirement as a player or was she not invited this year?

I haven't seen a formal announcement, but as a first-year HS head coach, it would be pretty tough to juggle. Never say never, but it sure looks like not right now in any case.

The USA Hockey Website announcement states that all practices and scrimmages are open to the public and that the schedule can be found at USAhockey.com.

No Schleper -- she'd become somewhat of a fixture on recent teams. Hope that doesn't mean she is less than healthy. Also, I noticed that Lee Stecklein, Milica McMillen, and Hannah Brandt appear on various camp rosters.
Ankle injury. She will be on ice at the end of August next time.

Wonder how they're doing in the way of applicants for this? Like to see someone in place before long.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Off Season 2011

Nothing heard in the way of a replacement for Natalie yet. I'm hopeful they can find a quality replacement that will stick around for awhile. ;)
