Minnesota Golden Gopher Off Season 2011

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Off Season 2011

Here's a fan's look at why optimism is justified.

Defense wins championships.

The defense will be backstopped by a second team All-America, already an Olympic bronze medalist.

Regular shifts on D will be taken by three who are almost certain 2014 Olympians. Additional strength is added by another outstanding senior. The team has a 5th D a player with a year of WCHA experience with steadily increasing responsibilities. 6th D is the only open position and all the Gophers have to offer is a national U-18 team stalwart. But even that spot will be contested by two returning rostered players with WCHA D experience.

Defense wins championships, the defense will be solid.

But you have to score some goals.

Well, how about returning intact the top two lines and 7 of the top 9 forwards from a team that competed for the conference championship and made the NCAA tournament? How about adding to those 7 a returning two time captain returning from an injury redshirt as an 8th forward? How about three highly touted freshmen hoping to capture that 9th forward position in the face of competition from the same two returning rostered players who have WCHA D experience, both of whom also have WCHA F experience?

It is early.

The Gophers are very clearly going to be able to put on the ice 9 forwards, 6 defenders and a goaltender who all clearly look able to play at the level required to compete for the top prize.

There is a reason why they actually play the games. Nothing is final until it is final, but why shouldn't we be optimistic?

Buckle up and get ready for the ride. It really, really should be fun. Shame on anyone in the Twin Cities calling themselves a hockey fan who misses this.

Hope the team gets off to a great start and more area hockey fans begin to take note! With the mediocre (at best) results that just about every other sports team in the area has had over the past year, you would think people would come to appreciate a winner.

Unfortunately the team could be 20-0 and it wouldn't matter.

Well...we've added a handful of locals. That should get us between 5-10 family & friends for each. Could add as many as 50 to the average...on a good day.

...guess we'll probably be losing a couple too due to those added to the roster that were often in the seats last season.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Off Season 2011

OK. I'll play the part of eternal optimist here...

The area is hungry for a winner! (witness the Lynx, who look to be much improved!).

If the Gopher women get off to a great start, including some big wins over their main conference rivals, the local papers SHOULD begin to take notice, and more fans SHOULD then follow. The coaches have recruited some great hometown talent, and people who've followed their high school careers will be interested IF the team is successful. I'm not forecasting sellouts, but I do believe the potential is there to build more interest and better attendance this year.

You can play the optimist and I'll play the wet blanket. I just remember back to the year they won their second NCAA title and women's basketball made it to the final 4. Front page of both papers and opening of sports on the news was women's basketball. The only thing they got on any of the news channels was the team getting off the bus with the trophy. This town wants a winner as long as it's a pro sports team or men's college team. Over the past 10 season they've arguably been the most successful team other than volleyball and wrestling and they couldn't get a sellout if they gave tickets away. I hope I'm wrong, but I doubt I will be.

I do remember this, the womens basketball team was regularly drawing 6,000+ fans a game and Lindsey Whalen became a local hero of sorts. And I agree that the audience for womens hockey is not as broad as for basketball (even here!) but it still gives me some hope that the potential to grow the sport is there.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Off Season 2011

Long shot question...with the lack of info available during the off-season. Has anyone heard anything about the progress of recovery of Alyssa Grogan?

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Off Season 2011

I know there's a fair amount of optimism for 2011-2012 among the Gopher faithful. That's certainly a reasonable position...or outlook in my estimation. Just for the sake of some off-season discussion, if anyone feels like it, maybe they could comment on what they think, or predict for this teams overall potential, perhaps compared to a couple / few of the more successful GWH teams in the recent past.

Details for some fairly recent editions of the Maroon & Gold that had nice seasons:

http://www.collegehockeystats.net/0405/teamstats/minw

http://www.collegehockeystats.net/0304/teamstats/minw

http://www.collegehockeystats.net/0809/teamstats/minw

Each of these teams put up some respectable numbers...particularly 2008-2009 with some good scoring balance. Feel free to compare with different Gopher teams than those I chose if you like. I know it's difficult if not impossible to predict...whether the 2011-2012 Gophers will develop the chemistry to possibly surpass...or equal the accomplishments of the previous teams...but I don't think anyone can contend it's not a legit possibility.

One more time...it'll be great to have West back. About that, with the significant "changes" to the team between the 2008-2009 and the following season, it was crystal clear from game 1 in '09-'10 that Emily West was the leader...spark plug...biggest offensive weapon and go to player on that team. As I said, it'll be outstanding to have her back...but she's definitely going to have more help next season. She'll still be a key but the team shouldn't have to rely on her as heavily as they did in her junior season. Ten game winners that season though...that's clutch! I have a feeling whichever linemates she ends up with...that's going to be a fun line to watch.

Unless of course you'd rather stick with the "Adrian" thread.

Across the board, it may be the most talented team we've ever had. However, I don't think that it is reasonable to compare them to the 2004-05 team at this point. That team didn't have to face the same level of competition as this one will, in part because the WCHA is much stronger now, so I think 36-2-2 will be rather tough. Also, they returned a large number of key contributors who knew exactly what it took to win at NCAA time.

I expect that we'll be better than the 2008-2009 team, although likely not as high-scoring. We should be better defensively.

Next year's team may be the fastest we've ever had. Getting West back obviously helps the team speed. Anderson is very fast. Bona has speed, although hers seems a little more like speed + quickness rather than pure end-to-end speed. Lorence, like many scorers, seems to get faster when she smells the net.

On the blueline, I'd guess that is the best 1 thru 6 rotation in Gopher history, assuming everyone is available.

But all that said, I don't know if we are better than the 3rd-best betting choice in the WCHA to win a title next season. Wisconsin has to be the favorite, even considering what they lost. They return a ton of talent up front, they've played in the championship game in Johnson's last five seasons and won four of those. UMD has hosted the Frozen Four twice, they've won both times, the second with a team that frankly wasn't that good. So both Miller and Johnson have both proven they can have their team playing their best hockey when it matters most. For the Gophs to hoist one or more trophies, they'll have to emulate the 2003-04 and 2004-05 Minnesota teams in that regard, not the 2008-09 edition.

Well, I was thinking about this as I typed my post...the obvious difference / improvement in competition between then, and now...and not just in the WCHA. A factor anyone has to consider when contemplating this teams potential vs. those earlier teams. I don't see an overall record like that previous season happening. With four games against both UMD and UW, I wouldn't consider two in the L column realistic...need to go at least .500 vs. both...or, at least that's what I hope for as a bottom line. .750 would be better and exceedingly satisfactory.

Coach Frost does have something to prove regarding post season play. It's time to secure that proof.

Several very good netminders in the WCHA. Goaltending will be huge.

Would it even be possible to have two players score more than 100 points (each) against today's competition? I see last year that Wisconsin, as dominating as they were all season, had three players who each netted at least 80 points, but no one had over 90. In 2004-05 Darwitz and Wendell were two of the best players in the world, let alone the conference. As good as several of the current Gophers are you would be hard pressed to say that any of them will dominate like those two did back in 2004-05. As you point out the other teams in the conference (and elsewhere) are so much improved (and tougher to score against) so it's at least questionable (IMO) if even a Darwitz or a Wendell would be able to break the 100 point barrier today.

I expect that we'll be better than the 2008-2009 team, although likely not as high-scoring. We should be better defensively.

Agree that the team should be better defensively especially as the season progresses and the freshmen adopt to more talented opponents and the much faster pace overall. I would expect the 3rd unit to be able to apply more offensive pressure than in years past, and as the chemistry develops (once the line is set) they should be able to outscore most other lines they face. And the coach should be able to put a 4th line out there that should be able to hold their own against most other lines in the conference, while giving the other forwards a break and fresh legs. Overall it has the potential be the deepest Gopher squad ever!

And don't forget about the goaltending, which can be the best in the nation.

(note the qualifiers, as the 2010-11 team has not even had a practice yet!) :)

Wisconsin and Duluth right out of the shoot after the mid-winter break. This should be fun and a time when we will all learn a lot about all three teams.

Well...as you aren't getting any new blood commenting on this thread and if your going to open the door like that...I'll make a comment on what I think. BTW...This on the back of you putting it out there on the Gophers being # 1 in ur signiture then mysteriously deleting it.

At last count there were 6 teams out of 34 reporting on BTD that haven't taken any Canadians in this years draft. Predictable that 2 of those teams are from Minnesota, 1 being a perenial also ran and 1 seemingly determined to get there. A 3rd just recently added a lone Canadian but that won't make a difference. The balance are a Div 1 independant that continues to be stuck in purgatory, a team that never takes Canadians cause they are the King, an Ivy that will never be better than .500 and a team situated next to The State of Hockey that is now drinking the same USA!, USA! Kool-aid.

What makes you think an all Minny freshman contingent is going to work on the Women's side and position your team for a run for the cup? Just asking...

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Off Season 2011

So...a little guess work on potential dates with the Buckeyes would be between 11/5/11 and 12/2/11...then maybe between 2/4/12 and 2/17/12.

Wisconsin and Duluth right out of the shoot after the mid-winter break.
Halldorson's teams, even some of the very best ones, tended to exhibit a good deal of rust in that first series out of the break. I haven't noticed that being as big a problem under Frost. The concern these days seems to be health and availability of all players due to holiday camps and international tourneys. It'll be key to be as close to 100% as possible for those two.
