Minnesota Golden Gopher Off Season 2011

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Off Season 2011

Fantastic article describing the awarding of a WCHA Post-Graduate Scholarship to Kelli Blankenship:

Especially gratifying to read such news regarding a former GWH player in light of recently announced HUGE cuts in state aid to higher education and the Minnesota University system, with 8%-9% increases in PG tuition. Congratulations are clearly in order!

Fully concur with this sentiment. Nothing is more impressive than a student-athlete being rewarded for taking the "student" part seriously. :)

BTW -- sorry about being MIA from the board the past couple of months. Gave me a chance to focus on the Stanley Cup Playoffs this year. :o

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Off Season 2011

...and the 2011-2012 roster! Now I can start getting the rookie jersey numbers straight in my head. Takes me a little longer these days. ;)

Frost and Co. have a nice roster there. Some of the best from the state of Minnesota mixed with some very talented players from north of the border and across the pond. It's going to be interesting to see what this team can do in the challenging WCHA competition.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Off Season 2011

Maybe only a little bit interesting-

7 listed as D, 13 listed as F, 1 listed as F/D.

Only Stenerson listed as F/D.

Downey listed as F.

Ramsey listed as D.

Frischmann listed as D.

Q: Grogan is listed as a Senior, her academic status. Is she eligible for medical redshirt? Which COULD lead to her being listed as a redshirt Junior?

I guess it could be considered a little puzzling that Frischmann and Downey aren't listed as F/D given their past service to the team. It's quite possible...with a little good luck and increased depth chart Frischmann won't be needed up front. Perhaps the same for Downey at D? Just speculating all around. Ramsey listed strictly as a D at the start of her college career does not surprise me. I can't recall ever hearing Grogan was taking a red shirt last season. A lot of people asked me that question at the rink throughout the season.

Equally surprising is Stenerson continuing to be listed as a F/D. Maybe I missed it, but I don't recall her ever seeing service as a D.

My guess is that the returners are listed as they were listed last season. Having worked on web pages in the past, most new pages start as a cut-and-paste of an existing one.

Because she didn't play or even dress after the UND series in October and only played in three games, she should qualify as West did. Whether that fits with her career/education plans, I don't know. West is obviously going to get plenty of ice time in her 5th season. If Grogan had an "extra" year, Raty will still have remaining eligibility, so there is presumably less benefit to Grogan in terms of playing time. We'll find out next fall if not before.

I was wondering about Stenerson listed as F/D as well and if maybe she had that designation while a Spud and simply kept it when joining the Gopher roster. Don't know enough about her HS career to say myself.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Off Season 2011

This is a very good looking team and are for sure the front runners for 11-12. I do like the Freshman coming in but feel maybe only 1 or 2 will get the opportunity to play a ton next year. I am a fan of Ramsey as she as a outstanding shot from the point. Just don't feel she'll get the opportunity on the PP as Minny is loaded back there next year. I like her better at forward for next year. Lorence is my pick to get the other playing time nod.

Still feel there will be 6 or 7 unhappy girls with lack of playing time.

If Frosty can't win it all with this group...

Agree that the team should be improved over last year, but I think it's unreasonable to EXPECT them to "win it all" at this point! There is just such a huge jump going from high school to D1, especially in the top tier of D1 where the Gophers compete, that you just know there will be an adjustment period. It will be very interesting to see which of the incoming frosh are able to adjust and become impact players. Hopefully this will happen well before the playoffs begin for several of them. The return of Emily West should be more of a factor early on. I really think the team missed her spark (and talent!) during several of their big games last year.

Sorry, I think this prediction is a little premature and one that's as difficult to make / support as a prediction for any one player's huge success prior to the season beginning. Even if you end up having players who are not content with their playing time on this roster, I don't believe the number would be as high as 6-7. There are a few returning who've dealt with the limited ice time since they joined the team. They may have never been thrilled with their situation but have stuck with it and played their roles without creating any apparent serious turmoil. I'm assuming some of those players will be in a similar situation in 2011-2012. So one question I'd have to ask, are you adding as many as 3-4 who will be in that same boat? I still think we could see more ice time for a 3rd & 4th line than what may have been typical in prior seasons. Of course, that often depends on how the game is going so it will obviously help if the team is ahead on the scoreboard most often. That's tough to predict as well.

Agree with D2D on "expectations" for winning it all. If the rookie class adjusts and gets comfortable...and some confidence fairly quickly, the team will win their share and compete with anyone...and contend for the WCHA crown.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Off Season 2011

I watched many games last year and rarley did the forth line play more than one or two shifts a period and quite a few one or two shifts a game. This team doesn't loose as do Wisconsin and UMD. They actually gain the freshmen and West. So yes they should be considered strong favorites. I don't see Frost playing four lines evenly so let's see three lines equal 9 forwards and 6 D so yes I see 6 or 7 players being dissappointed. Of course unless there are injuries.

On this team just the freshies alone have super stars from their HS teams and I see only 1 or 2 spots available in the top 3 lines. That could be a problem. A great problem for a coach but not for a player.

They will be fun to watch no matter who plays.

First, I'm not implying a 3rd & 4th line are going to get ice time equal to that of your two top lines...just that they may get more ice time than 3rd & 4th lines of seasons past. That'll depend on the scoreboard, I'm convinced. It's also pretty unusual to avoid injury throughout any season and not have opportunities created that way.

Other than that, I guess we just have a difference in opinion when it comes to some opponents in the WCHA. I think there will be at least 3-4 other teams with rosters of formidable talent. Enough so where I can't make a definitive type "win it all" prognostication. As much as I hope you're correct and would love to see it. Certainly, I think the potential is there and it's a possibility.

I'll be honest, I'm always puzzled by predictions of "trouble" before it happens. I've said it before...that's more of a believe it when I see it type thing for me. Not something I'm going to take someone's word for months before the season starts. I'm hoping your wrong on that call.

I guess the reason for speculating is this is off season. I'm a little bored and saw the roster and wanted to talk about hockey. I'm not saying there's going to be trouble. Yes, I'm anticipating some tough times this year with the players. I've always been a fan of Gopher hockey and would like to see another championship. That is if and only after my daughters team is eliminated. She knows many girls on the Gophers and they're already stating how nervous they are about this season and playing time.

Just having some fun and talking hockey. I do appreciate your passion.

Well I can definitely understand the players feeling that way with this roster...couldn't blame them for those sentiments in any way. It's just an opinion, but it's the wrong frame of mind IMO. If my kid is among them, my advice would be to not dwell on that. I would suggest focusing on going full bore at practice and when given ice time during games...giving everything you got, and let the chips fall. It's all you can ask of a player. Easier said than done, i know.

Off season speculation is good. Really enjoy reading all of it. Your thoughts included.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Off Season 2011

A rare mention of GWH in this morning's Star Tribune:

http://www.startribune.com/sports/blogs/123662814.html

Rare mention indeed especially for June. What is not at all rare is that the details are not correct.

"Also there will be four former Gophers, all forwards: . . . and Jenny Potter, who played her senior year at the U after three seasons at UMD."

Any Bulldog fans care to weigh in on that?

They're just nervous. With what my daughter says they know the numbers and are working hard. So I'm thinking they're ok now just hope they stay that way for the whole season. Very special players and girls. They'll be fine.
