Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

I think that players should have blinders on when it comes to polls and just go play. It doesn't matter where somebody is ranked, the score starts at 0-0, and the only thing that matters is where it ends up.
My guess is players and team staff are far less absorbed in the rankings than fans...and of course the sequined official destroyer, for motivational purposes.

Assistant Coach Nadine Muzerall at the Power Play Club Chalk Talk on Saturday was very emphatic that she and the other coaches and, hopefully, the players are not the least bit interested in the polls. She emphasized it is all about the next game and continuing to get better.

A very good message to reinforce in the locker room heading into Duluth.

...and if you believe that I have this bridge out east I'd like to sell you:)
Actually I do believe reinforcing the irrelevance of a #1 ranking would serve a purpose prior to the series at AMSOIL, even with the players completely aware of that irrelevance. Bigger danger would be the potential for the emotional and energy letdown after the UW series IMO...and possibly the post UW walking wounded factor.

I'm all out of disposable income when it comes to bridge purchases. :)

Will there be internet or some other form of viewing for this weekend's games for those of us unable to be there in person?

Please post link. Thanks in advance.

At the very bottom of the UMD website series preview is a link to video. I'm hoping it'll be active come game time. I would surely hope and think they'd have video capability and availability from their shiny new digs.

Well that should put to rest all of that "We're number 1" folderol.

It looked to me very much like the first period in Madison back in October when the visitors came out dead flat and got buried by a motivated home squad into a hole from which there was no digging out.

It is also worth noting that neither team has ever swept the season series so Minnesota going up there and expecting to win two more from the Bulldogs was a bit of a reach anyway. I think I read in the Duluth thread and agree that today is another day.

Yes, I believe it will. It should be noted that this is pretty much the equivalent in meaning to the brief ranking as #1.

Missed part of the 1st with video difficulties (like "America One" not enabling their registration / event link until after the puck had dropped) but I thought the same, among other things, from what I did see. Even with the brief delight after the first marker. That was short lived. I'd guess they'll get their opportunities in the rematch so I'd like to see a more productive PP. It didn't look very focused or potent last night.

For almost every year that there has been a Gopher women's hockey team 3 out of 4 against Duluth would seem like a good result.

Somehow, this year it seems just a tiny bit hollow.

If you're of the mindset that we use the regular season to get better and each game prepares us for the next, then Friday night offered a good lesson and Saturday showed the deserving results of execution.

You always gain far more from games that challenge you and the past two weekends should make you a better team.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Well, a good recovery on Saturday after a bad showing on Friday. Good adjustments made by the coaching staff and the team responded. I told Sarah Erickson before the game to get one -- and she got two with a couple of chances for the hat trick. Hopefully the Gophs will get more of that down the stretch. It was her first goal in seven games.
Sarah Davis looks strong after her time with the Canadian U-22 at the MECO cup. Plus they are getting productive play from their freshmen...not scoring a ton, but when you can roll them out and bottle up the opposition which they did more times than not last weekend, it takes pressure off those top two lines.
Sad to see Emily West not to play last weekend and was obviously not herself this weekend due to injuries...especially with her mom making the trip from Colorado to watch the last two series. Didn't play in the third period on Saturday after appearing to re-aggrivate the injury...not speculating what it is.
Congratulations to Nora on career shutout number 21 and is now tied with Erica Killewald for the all-time career record.
Appologies to those listening on Saturday as we lost our audio service with about seven minutes left to play. The server at Stretch Internet went down and was not able to get it working by the end of the game. It was not the fault of the U or Amsoil Arena (or mine for that matter..lol).
Let's get everyone out for next weekend against Bemidji. Would be great to see large crowds like the ones we had against Wisconsin.

The Beavers consistently play the Gophers tough and I'm expecting more of the same this weekend. For Minnesota, I hope there is improvement in the nagging injury dept. and all are able to play. There may be an emotional factor to the series as well. A good series / time for Minnesota to put together six periods of consistent, strong high energy effort. As always, a high number of quality SOG vs. ZT would be a priority objective. Bemidji has been pretty impressive in recent games vs. Minnesota with their shot blocking in their D zone.

My sincere condolences to Gopher Stephanie Anderson and family for the loss of their loved one.

Minnesota returns home to face Bemidji State on Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m. at Ridder Arena. Friday's match can be watched live via Gopher All-Access, while Saturday's game will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.
For those unable to make it to Ridder on Saturday.
