Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Minnesota can't afford another slow start and surrender the first goal like they did yesterday. From the opening faceoff they need to take charge and put the Badgers on their heels, just like they did for most of the second and third periods when they clearly had the upper hand. The Gophers also need to create traffic in front of Rigsby to block her sightlines on shots from the point, and then immediately position themselves to be square to the net for rebound opportunities. There were maybe a half dozen chances yesterday when there were loose pucks that came out in front of an open net but there were no Gophers there to bat it in.

I'm looking forward to another very exciting game this afternoon!

P.S. What a great crowd and atmosphere at Ridder yesterday, with ~2,500 in attendance.

Four outta six. Not perfection but I'll take it.

In all likelihood, it is even more important that they took three out of four points in the national picture. I don't think we have a chance to catch Wisconsin for the regular-season WCHA title. We had to battle to the end to win today; I don't see two more conference opponents being able to drop them the rest of the way. Never say never, but I don't see it happening. We won the season series, for the first time against them since 2005, and IMO, that was long overdue.

My personal props ...
Yesterday, I thought Kelly Terry was a little off her game, but she was back to being her usual one-woman forecheck again today. Her motor just keeps going. Great effort all weekend long by Anderson, Bona, and Brausen; they seemed to synch up with each other very well. The frosh looked to grow up a little this weekend, as did Lorence and Ramsey. A number of people played through injury today, none more so than Kelly Seeler, who picked a very nice time for #1 on the season. WTG Gophs!

Also, nice of folks to show up and fill the stands. For next time, when an annoying, "Let's go Red!" chant breaks out, feel free to drowned it out with something more welcome in our house. ;)

EDIT:
Also, Roman Augustoviz yesterday, Bruce Brothers today (women's coverage near the bottom.) Terry Ryan was at the game. Hopefully, this isn't just our 15 minutes of fame.

I still say, while being a tremendous team, UW is tapping their horseshoe warehouse and the inventory must be down to the last pallet. You can't dodge bullets forever and walk away only grazed. .

Well, there you have it. Now for someone other than UM to accomplish the same feat in order to create more early March interest.

The time also now seems appropriate for UM to achieve a little more "balance" in their results column. It's never a good thing to be overweight(ed)...in any direction.

Like next weekend, I presume? Nobody has ever swept a season series in that rivalry, so I presume that your favorite team will do their utmost to ensure this year is not the first.

Even a split would achieve a bit of the aforementioned "balance", would it not?

Minnesota Women's Hockey

Didn't get enough GWH action last weekend? Catch both games against Wisconsin on Big Ten Network tomorrow afternoon. The games will air back to back, beginning at noon.

Not how I'd vote. I think Wisconsin should be #1 until somebody makes a convincing case that they aren't. The Badgers did what they needed to maintain the WCHA lead this weekend. H2H results are nice, but UW has played the rest of the conference better and I don't see Minnesota's slightly tougher non-conference schedule being enough to vote the Gophers higher.

Agreed. 3 points on home ice by such slim margins should not have been enough to unseat Wisconsin. I don't think there's much to the point to the poll if it just moves teams up and down based on what happened last week without any deeper analysis.

I think the results in the four meetings between the two make the latest ranking plausible but of little significance obviously. I would have expected first place votes to be split just about down the middle though, less 1st place votes in the Cornell column...even with Wisconsin retaining the #1 spot.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

I think most would agree that polls are just for conversation, they have absolutely no other significance.

Does your number 1 vote go to what you perceive to be the best team or to what you perceive to be the team that has had the best season to date.

Best season to date? still Wisconsin, still clearly Wisconsin.

Best team? Head to head record opens this topic for conversation.

It was very, very entertaining hockey this weekend in Ridder. I suspect most everyone (with the notable exception of our friends in Duluth) wants to see these two teams play a couple more times.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

I agree with the rest of you in that I think Wisconsin should still be #1 for many reasons; none other bigger than it paints a huge target on your back -- especially going into UMD. You don't think Coach Miller is going to be using that to motivate?
Looking back at the Wisconsin series, I thought it was amazing how so many individuals stepped up. ie.-Kelly Terry, determined on the forecheck. Becky Kohrtum, best play this season. How about that third line? Best play from our #3 line all season --numerous chances in the offensive zone and held their own in the D-zone.
During the broadcast, I unofficially dubbed the line of Brausen-Bona-Lorence as the "piranhas" (or as Ozzy Guillen would pronunce it -- per-hant-ahz). Small, but fast and ferocious. Hope to see them get some ice time together against Duluth.
Let's also not forget how Kelly Seeler gutted it out on Sat despite a nagging and painful injury to net the game-winner.
A well-deserved 4 points, ladies!

As I implied previously, I can understand a first place vote for either team and any likely reasoning used to place a vote one way or the other. I'm having a little trouble with reasoning that a team shouldn't be #1...or receive votes for a #1 ranking simply because a team would rather not wear the target a #1 ranking puts on your back. If you want to be #1 when it matters you're probably going to have to be prepared and content to wear that target, as well as take the motivation it provides opponents head on when your own motivation is to earn and support a top ranking when the dust has settled. Even though I'm all for flying under the radar, as the season progresses that becomes decreasingly likely if a team is a true contender for the top spot.

I don't think you can duck a #1 ranking based on not wanting it at the same time you're attempting to play well enough to actually end up as the #1 team.

I didn't imply that the Gophers would WANT to duck the ranking, especially if it is deserved -- which more than one person voting obvious do.

This was only an opinion of my own and not intended as a suggestion of any implied meaning on your part.

Once again with the "your" for "you're" thing.

I think that players should have blinders on when it comes to polls and just go play. It doesn't matter where somebody is ranked, the score starts at 0-0, and the only thing that matters is where it ends up. Polls are just to give fans like us something to discuss between game days.:)
