Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

They are, by a lot of measures. Are they by their own? I sure hope not, because I believe that they want to be champions, and right now, they aren't playing at a championship level consistently enough to get there.

That is basically how I feel about Cornell's play. The good news is it is still early. Even if things were clicking on all cylinders now, it doesn't mean it would continue through the end of the season, and in all likelihood it would not.

I think everyone needs to relax. This team is a very good team and ran into a hot goalie. I think the team will learn from this game. It's early in the season and I do feel we were the better team on both nights. It's hockey and it's hard to be perfect. UND made some nice adjustments on Saturday that worked for this game. I can't believe that UND's D were thrilled to be replaced by 2 forwards. How will that affect them in upcoming games? There are at least 30 teams and coaches that wished they had our problems.

Considering the Sioux had to have been in the showers by the fourth, it's hard to imagine the Gophers couldn't at least have tied it up:confused::rolleyes:
A clear indication of just how bad the bounces were.

They clicked pretty good on Friday night, so if I judge them by their high points and not the lows, the potential is there. I just feel I've watched this story play out before.

Ah yes, the Brad Beutow defense. I'll concede that we were still the better team for most of Saturday, but we definitely were not in the third period. At least in our previous two losses, I thought that we were. I'll happily be wrong as the season unfolds.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Good points and yes I'll agree they didn't look at the top of their game in the 3rd. I do feel a team in the WCHA must play 3 lines to be consistent and if you over work a line on day one it will haunt you on day 2. especially in the WCHA. Keeps players fresh. YOu can not play 2 lines when you're also killing penalties and working the PP.

On the other side, UND gave up 7 goals in front of a big crowd and in a big game, but came out and gave up none the second game. Yes the goalie played magnificent but overall UND showed more effort, energy, and didn't turn over the puck. And I think UND will be just fine with MLK at D, she obviously can play that posisition quite well! Overall I think both teams showed their strenghts and weaknesses and it was a good series..

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

I think what this weekend proves is that there is no clear cut favorite and that a team can't get too high or too low at this point of the season. There is still 1/2 of the schedule yet to play and every team has shown that they have some vulnerability. Don't read too much into the 7-2 shillacking on Friday or the 3-0 loss Saturday.

Now putting on my rose-colored glasses, if Kessel hits the twine instead of the pipe in the 2nd, I think MN wins on Sat and sweeps. Big kudos to Jorid Dagfinrud...she didn't always see the puck, but by being in the correct position almost every time, the puck hits her. Out of position by 3-4" here or there, Gophers put in about five. She was HOT. Based on that performance, and the fact that her numbers this season when she does play are better than Ney's, I can maybe see her getting more time.
Gophs basically gave up 1 goal on Sat (I know the 2nd goal wasn't technically an empty-netter, but Nora was practically to the bench when the shot was taken.)

Northhockey was right, it was a good series.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Very important now to be focused and motivated to entertain a very dangerous Buckeye squad with many potent offensive weapons of their own, one, a player I've seen completely take over a game a couple times. I hope for a sweep to put a strong finish on the 1st half...knowing that won't be easy and two strong sixty minute efforts will be needed.

Little work on that PP in practice this week?

I was expecting to hear, "The goal is under review." Those people in the first few rows must have gotten pelted.

Brilliant! Gotta say..that's a Beauty. Specially Gumby coming over the glass at about the 1 minute mark!

Hit Men Tradition for a number of years now with /charities/less fortunate kids/hockey winning!

Check out KSTP's 10:00 news tonight (that's Channel 5), they came out to film some of practice today and talked with Coach Frost, Jen Schoullis and Amanda Kessel.

It works! The new scoreboard was tested today. Can't wait to see it during game action on Saturday!

:)

Hope there are many home team scoring highlight replays to show on the new Jumbo!

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

I don't like every single thing about the new scoreboard but I do think it is an enormous and long overdue improvement. Now if they can just get the replay function tuned in a little better. Between period highlight package?

Is there any information about Kelly Terry?

Unfortunately, no #10 today.

Well, there was in the Maroon & Gold game (Brittany Francis), won by Gold in a shootout. There's no stopping Alex Zebro in a shootout, and apparently, you can't even hope to contain her, as she scored on both of her attempts, including the decisive goal. For Maroon, Jody Horak dominated offensively as she often does in these events. Great to see a lot of familiar players skating once more.
