Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Actually, I asked somebody about that at the UND game last week after reading some of the talk about using suits. I don't know what Wisconsin does but UND only registers scanned tickets into their attendance. Having been at the game last night I would say the attendance figures were accurate at the beginning of the game and less and less as the game went on as it was all Gophers. Great win for the Gophers, poor showing for UND. Should be an interesting game today to see how both teams respond after that beating.

I never heard that about UND, although I have heard that about UW. They very well could though, do you have a source? :)
Apparently not a reliable one. :o I read it online, but whether it was in the forum or some team's live blog I don't recall. Based on yungblud's post, I'll retract what I said in relation to UND, because in years past when I've attend games at the REA, there did seem to be a head count to support the announced figure. Definitely not the case in Madison.

Convinced it'll be a very different game tonight. With a bad attitude, fight (not in a literal sense)...and huge effort from the Sioux. It could get physical.

LET'S GO GOPHERS!

Well I hope it is a better game today for the sake of all fans. And I hope the Sioux get the split (for my sake)!

Three WCHA series on the road; three splits. I could post a lot of other stuff, but I think I'll just censor myself.

Disappointing the inability to take advantage on the PP in the 3rd.

At least you took it down. Good job.............see. :) Now at least you can look forward to the rest of the season. Stick with the positive. :)

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

I did not see the game but naturally as a Gopher fan I'm disappointed in the outcome, especially after Friday night's dominating win. It would appear that UND's goaltender (Dagfinrud) played very well, having made 34 saves on 34 shots, so congrats to her. The Gophers' shot total was down only slightly, from 39 the night before, so it seems like they had plenty of opportunities to score. And defensively, it looks like the Gophers gave up fewer shots on Saturday (17) than the night before (24), so maybe they surrendered better quality shots and UND took advantage? Or perhaps Raty just had an off-night?

It's certainly not the end of the world, as they say splits against the better teams when playing them on the road are OK, but I'm sure the team and coaches are a little disappointed to fall another 3 points behind the Badgers in the conference standings.

Two of the goals were essentially empty net. The third was officially, and she was halfway to the bench on the second. On the first, Davis and Jalosuo both fell down on the strong side; couldn't tell if #7 was "helped" to the ice. Hard to blame your goalie in a game where you don't score. To that end, to score, you have to shoot the puck. Supposedly that's been an area of emphasis, but it looked like a few people may have forgotten that lesson at key times. The Goph's best chances came when Kessel did just that, but the inside of a pipe was as close as she came. Both Schoullis and Terry had chances with empty nets, but it looked like #24 was forced to try an awkward backhand and #10 had almost no angle, but had she been a lefty, she probably scores.

Thanks for the added detail. The box score shows UND's second as a short-handed tally, as opposed to an empty netter, I suppose because Raty was still on the ice (albeit halfway to the bench at the time). So really only one goal on 17 shots...as you say if you're going to win your offense has to score. Disappointing how they could go from 7 the night before all the way to zero in this one.

(I know, we shouldn't complain, they are having a great season so far).

I know, we shouldn't complain, they are having a great season so far.
They are, by a lot of measures. Are they by their own? I sure hope not, because I believe that they want to be champions, and right now, they aren't playing at a championship level consistently enough to get there. They set the bar on Friday night, showing what they are capable of doing. Coming out in game two on the road with an effort some distance below that, when you can be positive that the team that you beat the night before is going to come out harder just isn't going to get it done. I know North Dakota was far, far better on Saturday than they were on Friday, but we all know how hard teams go in March, so we may as well get used to it. I realize that we missed Seeler last night, but UND missed Slavin, and they found a way to reconfigure and win in spite of her absence.

So players, consider this some tough love. Because the way that you're going right now just plain isn't going to get you there. You want to be NCAA champs? Prove it. Show me in December, don't think you can turn it on at some point in March and that will be enough. And the coaches need to look in the mirror as well, because at this level, it is a pretty unforgiving game. You can't get called for "too many" in the final minutes when you're trying to come back, and there can't be any confusion with your goaltender as to when to come off. Wisconsin made it rather clear last season that they won't be beaten by a team trying to get by playing mostly two lines. We need a third line that can be trusted on the ice at any point of a tie game. If we don't have one now, then somehow, we need to figure out how to construct one. Because when a team gets its first PP chance 3 minutes into the third and the players that are counted on to score are already too gassed to get anything done, that is a problem that can't be repeated. "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

If I've misjudged this team's aspirations, I apologize, because if our definition of great is make the NCAAs, maybe even the Frozen Four, and get to add a number to our participation banner, then we are looking great.

How come you only pipe up after a Gopher loss and we hear not a peep after wins? Kind of like a little p**sy I'd say.

Your memory is also short. Spoke to you a few days ago; the Karma thing. I owed you one for all those silly rep comments you keep sending me. Now THAT is what I would call being a p**sy. As for the team, they'll be fine. You can't win them all. :)

These are three things that very much needed to be said and I salute you, ARM, for saying them.

Coaching at this level is recruiting, x's and o's, and game management. Two out of three makes good coaching. Merely good coaching isn't going to be enough to consistently win championships at this level.

The current staff certainly CAN recruit as well as anyone, better than almost all. They certainly CAN do the x's and o's as well as anyone else.

Game management?

Is a rating of 5th in the league fair? It is a young coaching staff but a staff with enough experience that young is no longer an acceptable excuse.

Johnson. Miller. Sertich. Idalski. Frost.

Until he proves that he deserves a higher rating?

Minnesota had four power play opportunities in the fourth period, but the Sioux’s penalty kill was superb and limited the Gophers to just two shots in those chances.

So, it sounds like at least a few of the players felt they played well enough to win on Saturday...but couldn't get a break, or a bounce. There was that one pipe by Kessel.

Considering the Sioux had to have been in the showers by the fourth, it's hard to imagine the Gophers couldn't at least have tied it up:confused::rolleyes:
