Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

The UND crew isn't happy but on the other hand they are both very knowledgeable hockey guys. They are not trying to sugar coat for the ND fans what is to this point a pretty ugly two periods.

4-0.

Yeah, I would say UND didnt show up. at all. especially their D and turnovers. Minnesota came out and capitalized on their chances.

Especially the color guy is a welcome change from what one gets on most team's feeds. He actually knows hockey and recognizes good and bad plays no matter which team made them. Plus they aren't begging for a call every time a Sioux player falls down like most home town announcers do.

Welcome relief indeed.

TV replays now on, very, very bad turnover by the UND defense on the 4th goal.

Very gratifying result for Minnesota.

I think, though, that UND is a quite a bit better team than they showed tonight.

I am expecting a fabulous game tomorrow.

Let's go Gophers!

Agree. I expected a much closer game, and getting behind in the first 30 seconds, and then giving up a second goal a few minutes later seemed to take the wind right out of their sails.

Just returned home from the mens game (4-2 win over MN State Mankato). I am SO happy the Gopher women won, especially so convincingly.

Now hoping for the SWEEP!

I'll second that. As long as those conniving sisters are on that team I don't think the Gophers can beat them by enough. 15-0 would have been alright though.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Before we turn the page, last night's game reminded me of one of the funner games to watch from a Gophers fan perspective. There were a lot of similarities beyond the obvious final score of 7-2:

- Minnesota scored on the first shift with a goal upstairs, one at 13 seconds and last night at 22 seconds;
- the Gophers made it 2-0 shortly after with a quick strike off of a turnover;
- the lead after one period was three goals;
- the Minnesota top line scored five goals, with each member having at least one;
- the power play was lethal (3 of 5 and 3 of 6);
- the Goph's speed and fore-check pressure proved decisive;
- the opponent had three forwards who either had played in the Olympics or would the next year;
- a rivalry with the opposing team had flared up in the past couple of seasons;
- the opponent's primary color was green and they had either changed their school mascot or were in the process of doing so;
- the game took place in the opponent's state.

Amazing coincidences! (ARM, you are the ONLY person that could have possibly come up with all these ;))

I also wonder if there was any "discrepancy" in the reported attendance figures in the 2005 Dartmouth game? I see that the USCHO box score has last night's game at 2,484 but this morning's Star Tribune shows 3,789. Either way, it's a good crowd, but you wonder what might account for such a large difference (1,305).

Didn't even have to follow the link...I'll never forget that game. :)

I remember being sternly warned right here in this very forum to "be careful what you wish for brookyone" after I posted that I'd rather play Dartmouth than another...5th-6th rehash with Wisconsin.

I also remember an early camera shot of coach Hudak after the quick 2nd goal. Shaking his head...a look of complete bewilderment on his face.

Everything on the UND site says 2,484, as does collegehockeystats, so I'm guessing that the S'Trib fact checking has been lost in a budget cut. Note that UND counts suites sold for men's hockey in their women's hockey totals, so that doesn't mean there were actually that many fans there. UW does the same thing, so it will be interesting to see how their average attendance trends in their new rink after everyone has attended a game to check the place out.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Actually, I asked somebody about that at the UND game last week after reading some of the talk about using suits. I don't know what Wisconsin does but UND only registers scanned tickets into their attendance. Having been at the game last night I would say the attendance figures were accurate at the beginning of the game and less and less as the game went on as it was all Gophers. Great win for the Gophers, poor showing for UND. Should be an interesting game today to see how both teams respond after that beating.

I never heard that about UND, although I have heard that about UW. They very well could though, do you have a source? :)
