Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

I'd like to see the match up...thinking also that the current Tonka team is superior to those dominant EP teams of yore.

I would love to see the match up. Let us see how the fall elite league goes. Some very good talent will play against SSM

Here is schedule of competition. Hats off to the continued evolution of the Elite League to allow the top 60 HS players in MN to get some NA competition prior to the HS season.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

Was going to start a thread but the topic didn't seem specific to women's college hockey. At a tournament this week, one of the rules states; "Girls will shake hands after each game with GLOVES ON."

Has there been some incident about this? Seems odd. Thought others around the HS age group might have some input.

Only thing I can think of is they are worried about spreading a flu or some other illness.

MRSA most likely. Nasty stuff that requires strong antibiotics to kill, usually via IV

Spot on. I was playing five or so years ago, and contracted said "bug". I can't say for sure that I contracted it in hockey, but it in s a huge coincidence, a nurse on a team we played a week or so before had recently had to take time off for a "highly contagious bacterial infection." It took me six months to get clear of it. I've been gloves on ever since.

Getting primed for the action in a couple weeks or so. Again, last season's final rankings...which should have some adjustment for the 2012-2013 pre-season I'd guess. I think BSM slides into #2 behind Tonka. Edina probably strong / top 5 again. I'd probably rank Srillwater, Eagan and Lakeville South higher than they finished. Never overlook Roseville...it seems, almost regardless of their losses.

Shattucks is not dominating the Fall Elite League this year. Team White has beat them twice, both times the score was 5-1.

I did go to Duluth to watch the JWHL games a few weeks back. As an earlier poster said, the games are much faster. I would agree. The skill level on a depth chart was much higher than a MN HS Girls team, much to my surprise. The players are from all over US/ Canada, not to many from MN. I guess if you are from areas that don't have a structure for girls hockey (like MN) than perhaps this is the road to NCAA. The biggest thing for me is the money. I am even more grateful that I live in MN! I believe our approach is the greatest :)

I will say that the parents in the JWHL that I spoke with at the games were happy that their daughter could have this experience (i.e. traveling, the hockey & such).

I did notice that the periods were 20min long. Like the Fall Elite League there were scouts at the games. Did anyone else see any games here? Curious about your thoughts.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

I was in Duluth and watched several of the JWHL games (daughter plays for Colorado). My feelings are that your own kid's game always looks fast until you are able to see the next level up play a game in person. We went and saw the Ohio State vs Minnesota Duluth game after watching JWHL games and it appeared to me that there was a significant difference in talent level from JWHL to D1 college. Colorado has a high school season for girls that starts in March and ends in May. Most of the girls that play on the JWHL team also play on a high school team. The girls have great fun playing on the high school team in front of their friends and family, but the serious hockey is played during the JWHL season. I have never seen anyone scouting a high school game in Colorado, so the only choice if you want to play beyond college, is to play for Colorado Select which although it is expensive, it is still about 20-25% of the cost of going to a hockey boarding school like Shattuck St Mary's. There are times when most parents wonder if they are spending 10K per year for a 5K college scholarship.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

You are right if you are in a position to get a D1 scholarship. If you look at the numbers of US players going to D1 schools each year it is kind of shocking. There are 34 D1 schools. Each class has 5-6 players or 170 to 204 recruits per year. More than half of those players are foreign. Also, there are only 18 scholarships per team, so you are talking about 64-77 US players per year getting scholarships at D1 schools. The numbers stated are also a bit lower because the ivy league schools don't offer athletic scholarships. Of course D3 schools technically do not have athletic scholarships, but if the school is private, they have some flexibility of the overall cost for the player such as an "Academic Scholarship". As a parent, you have to decide if you should keep spending the money through high school or not. It's really hard to know if your kid will develop into a college player or not. Sometimes it will be obvious that a player will be able to play at the D1 level, but the majority of players and parents have no idea until November or December of their kids senior year of high school.

I'd be surprised if it is that low. At least around here, most of the kids that are going to get D-I scholarships are verbally committed before their HS season even starts.

Also one must have some idea as their daughter competes in their younger years if they might have a chance at a scholarship. A player invited to national camps or doing showcases has a pretty good idea before senior year.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

ARM is correct. The top tier players are committing either before or during their Junior year. The next tier are getting offers right before or after Ntl camp in the summer and then there are a few more that get opportunities in the fall but very few.

Definitely the right timelime for D1 scholarship players. D1 recruited walk-ons happen a little later - usually in Summer/Fall of Senior year. There is always some movement amongst the D1 teams right after the Early Decision deadlines when some kids don't get into the schools they committed to - this is more of an Ivy League phenomenon, but it sometimes leads to a very good player being unexpectedly available and the schools that have scholarship room for whatever reason (transfer, drop-out, etc.) maneuvering to get that kid.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

I don't know if this is the right thread but I could not find a JWHL, or the MN Approach thread anymore. SO here goes, I noticed NAHA ran it up on the MN T-Breds 18-0. That does not seem right.

It actually isn't a big surprise given the current state of the T'breds...dare I say roster. Just having a conversation via email regarding this very topic. Many anticipated these type of results during pre-season discussion and viewing the final roster. Hope they can turn the organization around sooner rather than later.
