Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

Big win for Hill Murray over Stillwater 5-0 ...
Brooky ... brooky ... are you okay? Might be a long year in the St. Croix Valley. Or is Hill that much stronger than expected in the post H.B. era?

They did return most of their top scorers from last season, excluding Brandt of course and No. 2 Heller. Otherwise, six of their top eight point producers are on this year's team, as are both goalies.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

Hill was a good team with talent in addition to the 2012-2013 WCHA ROTY, last season. Still the score surprises me. Ponies are a better team than that score indicates I think. SEC and 4AA will be brutal competition as usual.

D2D...how was the competition at Braemar? Did you see the BSM / Cake Eater tussle?

Yes, I did see the game on Friday night. BSM controlled play for the most part, outshooting the Hornets in each period and by a final margin of 29-15, but the game was still in doubt until the very end. With BSM holding on to a 2-0 lead, they managed to give Edina a two man advantage in the final minute - a 6 on 3 after pulling their goalie. But seconds later an ill-advised pass led to a costly turnover in BSM's zone, which resulted in a short-handed, empty netter which all but ended it.

I saw this morning that Benilde did handle Breck pretty easily in the championship game, by a 7-1 score and outshooting them 46-15. So they obviously have some offensive firepower, and defensively they appear to be improved over last year as well. In the consolation game, Edina and Blake tied 4-4.

Looking at the schedule this week, it doesn't get any easier for Edina as they will host Minnesota's two best northern teams, Roseau and Warroad, this coming weekend.

Got a chance to watch Benidle play Saturday afternoon here in Cloquet.. they didn't fly up and down the ice like I thought they might, maybe the afternoon game after a night game had them a little tired. Still fun to watch, Cloquet had some chances to carry the puck deep (even got a 1-0 lead on them) and nearly every time a player in red turned on the speed and chased them down.

Photos of Cloquet (Esko/Carlton) vs Benidle if anyone is interested

2012 Schwan Cup...scroll for the girls brackets:

http://www.nscsports.org.prod.ngin.com/page/show/505765-schwan-cup-schedules-and-results-

Having trouble finding anything on the Kaposia Classic. Is Edina hosting a holiday tournament? Any others?

The Schwan's tournaments for girls are nowhere near what they used to be...not a single ranked AA team in any of the brackets.

This link will show the teams that are playing in Edina's "Abra Invitational" starting on the 27th: http://www.mngirlshockeyhub.com/page/show/672099-holiday-tournaments
The field here, though still strong, does appear to be slightly weaker compared to what it's been in the recent past.

The "2012 Eagles Mid-Winter Meltdown" in Eden Prairie will have its strongest field ever this year, mostly due to the state's top two ranked teams - Minnetonka and BSM - choosing to play here this year instead of the Kaposia and Schwan's respectively. Perhaps not coincidentally, the host school was placed in the opposite bracket from these two. ;)

The Kaposia Classic, which begins on December 29th at Wakota Arena in South St. Paul, has once again drawn a strong lineup of teams from both classes. First day matchups will be:

Upper Bracket
12:00PM - Hill-Murray vs. Bloomington Jefferson
2:15PM - Roseville vs. Lakeville North

Lower Bracket
5:00PM - Warroad vs. Blake
7:15PM - Hibbing vs. South St. Paul

The semi-finals will be held on Monday the 31st at 2:15PM and 4:30PM, while the championship game will be played on Tuesday the 1st at 4:45PM.

There are many other tournaments held over the Holidays but these three (Edina Abra, EP and Kaposia) are the big ones this year.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

Thanks D2D...good info. I usually use the metro area holiday tournaments to catch particular teams...for obvious reasons. I won't see them all obviously...but would like to catch BSM, Hopkins, Blake, Breck, Jeffereson, Roseville, Eagan. Wingers too if the chance presents. I see they're at Breck on the 22nd.

Agree on the Schwan Cup. Used to attend that regularly back when the Blue Division was routinely strong.

Good opportunity for many college scouts as well, again for obvious reasons. ;)

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

The problem with scouting the holiday tournaments is that several of the marquee players are away for U-18 Worlds.
