Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

It actually isn't a big surprise given the current state of the T'breds...dare I say roster. Just having a conversation via email regarding this very topic. Many anticipated these type of results during pre-season discussion and viewing the final roster. Hope they can turn the organization around sooner rather than later.

Roster, perhaps. Hopefully they can improve by years end. I for one believe in the MN approach, but I would think more WI kids might play here. I did see my first JWHL weekend in Duluth this year and have had a different attitude toward this league since (still prefer HS). I can see the lure of this league. I wish I was really loaded with $ and could assemble the top 15 Minny Kids and run it up on NAHA!!!!

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

I don't know if this is the right thread but I could not find a JWHL, or the MN Approach thread anymore. SO here goes, I noticed NAHA ran it up on the MN T-Breds 18-0. That does not seem right.

I don't know if you were joking, but it hardly belongs in the MN Approach thread.

The Minnesota approach to youth hockey is a community-based approach where kids from mites through high school play within their school district. Yes, some transferring that occurs, although the high school league has made that difficult once a kid reaches 9th grade. Yes, there is some gaming of the system. And yes, there is elite club hockey--in the off season, not during October - February.

But by and large, the Minnesota approach fosters participation, which is why Minnesota has a lot of youth players. And not coincidentally, why we produce a large number of college recruits.

The Thoroughbreds is a MN-based club team. No disrespect intended, but I contend it is not the Minnesota Approach. It might have been the elite player's option before 1995, i.e. before varsity girls hockey. But nowadays, the top talent in the state play for their high school.

I agree with your later post. I would put our top 15 high school players against anyone's.

McMillen is, Brandt isn't. Hannah was on the Worlds' roster last spring.

Middle Dec. or thereabouts! Skippers and Red Knights! Now I have a solid reason to root for the Red Knights too!

Speaking of high school hockey vs. club, these two schools represent the best of both. Guess you are rooting for the club team as Red Knights have representation from many different school districts and get recruited hard $$ to play at this private school.

Actually, no. My reasons for rooting for BSM have nothing to do with what you're complaining about. Really...I hope this thread doesn't morph into the typical high school forum "whine about recruiting" thread. Don't care as it's the task of the MSHSL to care.

You see these kinds of ridiculous accusations whenever a private school does well in any sport. St. Thomas, Totino-Grace or Cretin-Derham Hall have strong traditions in football; Blake, Rochester Lourdes and BSM in girls soccer; BSM, Breck and Hill-Murray in boys and girls hockey, etc. etc. If you were to add up all of the scholarship money awarded to all of the needy athletes in all of the sports I would be willing to bet that it's a lot less than you would think. The vast majority of their athletes come from upper middle class to upper class families who get no money at all.

And as respects the BSM "club team" in girls hockey they've never been in a state championship game since opting up to Class AA a number of years ago, and in fact haven't even made it to the state tournament since 2007-08 (just checked). So maybe it's their turn this year?

Wow Brookyone, Star Tribune doesn't know much about hockey. Just read the articles and it has the dream team way wrong. What about Sydney Baldwin. Jaci Renke isn't on the U18 national team nor Cline or Halverson.
Who writes these things?

I know the guy who writes, and is responsible for much of the coverage. I don't believe he's allowed the time or dedication of resources (himself) to be as informed as many fans are.

If you're referring to the 20 Players to Watch...complaints and disagreement are commonplace. If your limiting a list to 20 then noteworthy players are going to be left out. I don't think it's intended as a definitive list of the 20 best. Who would agree on that?

Unless covering girls high school hockey is his only assignment, it would be virtually impossible for a single reporter to personally see and evaluate all of the teams and their players each season. So out of necessity he's forced to rely on input from the coaches, and which players stand out from the rest based on stats from previous seasons. In the process some deserving players will inevitably be left out while others may not live up to the hype.

But then again, even D1 college coaches - whose jobs depend on getting it right more often than not - are not immune from making an occasional mistake when evaluating the available talent and bringing in those who they believe will help them win.

So while we can all quibble about which players are highlighted and which ones were not included, I'd much rather have the paper continue to run the season full-page preview than not.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

I see a couple of former Gopher teammates were behind opposing benches recently with Wayzata squeeking out a 3-2 win over CDH.
