Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

I had read in the high school forum opinions that "the hit" was not accidental, contrary to the WBL coaches opinion. I would tend to support a suspension for a post of this nature on Facebook. A pretty clear example of poor sportsmanship and judgement IMO.

Apparently my company did TV for the game, I'll try to find it.

My co-workers did say it was behind the play.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

Tonight should be the most exciting night of the season at Aldrich. No other section, boys or girls, has 4 heavyweight top-ten type teams face-off like the Girls' 4AA semifinals.

Stillwater-Roseville: met last year in the semis, Roseville winning 4-0. Met in the finals in 2009, Stillwater winning in OT 3-2.
This season: the first game was at Roseville in December--hard fought, back and forth, very even and if anything Stillwater had the advantage as they poured it on late in the 3rd. But Roseville hung on to win 3-2.
The second game at the Blizzard was mostly dominated by Roseville, outshot the Ponies 2-1, but Stillwater survived pucks bouncing thru their crease and dinging crossbars to win 1-0. Like always when these two play, this is a toss-up and doesn't always go to the team that plays the best. Stillwater might have momentum after finishing the season with wins over Roseville, White Bear, and a short-handed win over Mounds View.

Hill Murray-White Bear: also met last year in the semis with HM winning 4-2. Two weeks ago the Bears were heavy favorites to win the section (according to me). Then they lost to Stillwater and lost their best player for the season. They haven't been the same team since, losing quietly to Roseville and struggling (for a while) to win their first round game vs. the Blades. HM fans believe that HB is Supergirl and capable of winning every game with little or no help. That might be true, but with her in the lineup HM is 1-5 against top-10 teams, plus Warroad. Not sure how many WBL girls are on this HM roster--at least a few.

I will guarantee this is the most fun you can have for $7 tonight.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

The 4AA games were as good as anticipated--typical SW-RV game, intense nailbiter to the end.
Super courageous performance by WBL's Crysta Lowell, who braced her injured knee and played. Looked to be about at 50% speed, but I'll bet it gave the Bears a lift.
Gopher fans should find video of HB's 3rd goal to get a preview of what they'll see from her in 2 years. On Friday night you can catch two of your 2012 recruits in one game with HB and Lee Stecklein from Roseville.

It doesn't seem like many Gopher fans attend these games to see the players of the future. I wonder why not?

The Section 5AA semis tonight at Roseville Square Gardens are almost as good as the 4AA. Two of next year's Gopher recruits face off in the 6:00 game, Meghan Lorence and Irondale vs. Rachel Bona and Coon Rapids. They would be my two favorites for Ms. Hockey also. And the 8:00 game is a dandy--a very even matchup with Anoka vs. Centennial.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

Expect the winner to be either Ramsey, Lorence or Bona. They are all Minnesota recruits and the Ms Hockey winner is always a MN recruit or is it the other way around? My bet would be on Ramsey.
There was a long string of Ms. Hockey winners attending the "U" that was broken by Thunstrom and Chute, but the last three have gone on to be Gophers. It is hard to compare the three Gopher commits that you mentioned, because Ramsey has the best supporting cast, Lorence plays on a less-talented team, and Bona's squad is about in the middle. If Ramsey was on a weaker team, would she adjust her game to carry more of the load offensively? Earlier in the year I thought that she was the favorite to win, but Bona and Coon Rapids have had a very strong campaign. As for the other two, Kuehl had an awesome year, but Mound-Westonka's schedule is down a notch from the others. Sylvester's team is so loaded offensively that it gets tough to say how valuable any one player may be. One of the more even groups of five finalists that I can remember.

Attended the Blake Breck game yesterday. Breck was clearly the better team last night

However it was one of the worst examples of poor officiating I have seen in a my 12 plus years of watching many youth, high school and college hockey games. Breck was extremely physical and numerous late hits, interferences and holdings went uncalled. In one case a Blake player skating up mid ice is tripped, falls to the ground with a Breck players stick stuck in her skate and yet no call. The refs should be embarassed.

I had very similar feelings watching the Roseville / Stillwater semi...but for ALL high school games I've ever watched, the officiating leaves much to be desired, IMO. I've pretty much come to expect questionable officiating in the high school game.

You are right about Chute and Thundstrom and I shouldn't use absolutes. But in 15 years of Ms Hockey, 13 have been Minnesota recruits. In regards to your question about Ramsey, I'm not sure that offensive adjustment is relevant since Ramsey is a D. I would hope that she is not judged on her offensive skills alone. I personally think Minnetonka is the number 1 team because of Ramsey and without her they would struggle to be in the top 10. I was picking Ramsey because of three factors. First and foremost she is as deserving as any on the list, second she is going to be a Gopher and third she is the daughter of Miracle on Ice's Mike Ramsey. A little name recognition never hurt anyone.

PS My personal favorite is Bona but my bet is Ramsey.

If I had a vote for the Ms. Hockey winner I'd have a very tough time deciding among these 5 finalists. The upside is you couldn't really go wrong no matter which finalist you cast your vote for.

I do think it's time...even overdue, for an award specific to senior defensemen...a Senior D of the Year.

The officials seemed to take turns favoring one team, then the other. I am thankful that they didn't call a penalty every time a Stillwater player fell and their fans howled -- I thought I was watching a game at the DECC. ;) While there were questionable calls in that game, Stillwater did have a great chance with a late 4-on-3 and even a few seconds of 5-on-3 to tie it up. IMO, not pulling the goalie sooner was a coaching gaffe. Sometimes, coaches get too consumed with hollering at the officials and forget to coach their team.

But in 15 years of Ms Hockey, 13 have been Minnesota recruits.
I think it is 12 with an asterisk. Annamarie Holmes went to Princeton, IIRC, and Winny Brodt played a year at UNH before transferring to Minnesota.

PS My personal favorite is Bona but my bet is Ramsey.
I'd like to see Bona win as well, but I'm biased because she had a monster game against a strong opponent in the only game that I saw her play this year. Of the three, Lorence may be the one to make the biggest impact next season.

The officials didn't cost Stillwater the game...but the Ponies clearly got jobbed out of 3-4 power plays that should have been. Despite that, Stillwater didn't take advantage of their domination in play as they should / could have. Roseville 'tender played well. Stillwater got away with a few clear infractions of their own as well. I think the officiating in high school hockey for the girls is largely substandard...while you have to appreciate those that do it. I'd guess compensation is minimal.
