Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

The Cloquet (CEC) girls are hitting their stride at the right time in Section 7AA. They beat Grand Rapids last Thursday 1-0, PHM (only PH after this year, Marshall is dropping out) 4-2 last night, and face Duluth again on Thursday, though they already beat them once. Making their case to get that 2nd seed behind the obvious #1 seed Elk River in 7AA. Both sophomore goaltenders are playing good, and still rotating every other game this late in the season.

It says something about the state of hockey in the Lake Superior Conf. when the 5th place team in a mediocre TC conference is the 'obvious #1 seed' in 7AA.

Its a problem with girls hockey in general but especially in the smaller communities. Grand Rapids was the runner-up in the Class AA State Tournament just 3 years ago when they lost to Eden Prairie but their talent level has taken a hit since. The same can be said about Duluth and PHM. People like to talk about the growth of girls high school hockey but for the most part growth has leveled off a few years ago. Only the big programs like Edina, Roseville, Stillwater, Minnetonka, and the privates with recruiting, can consistently put together a talented squad year after year. The rest of the schools pretty much bide their time until a good class rises up from the youth ranks.

While I would generally agree with all of what you're saying I would point out that Roseau and (especially) Warroad are still fielding comparitively strong teams, and these towns are quite a bit smaller than Grand Rapids, Cloquet and what the P/H/DM coop has to draw from. And of course there is no comparision in size to Duluth - Duluth is about 10 times as big, population wise, than Roseau or Warroad. Plus Duluth East on its own (without co-opting) has one of the best boys teams in the state, but for some reason girls hockey hasn't caught on there as much. To some extent it's the same on the Range - Hibbing and Virginia still have very good boys teams, but if anything the girls have fallen behind.

Just hope Section 7 doesn't continue to go in the same direction as we've been seeing lately.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

HATS OFF! Stillwater drops Roseville and White Bear in the same week - could be peaking at just the right time and be the Team to beat in 4AA.

Hill Murray could be the unknown dark horse? They just beat S. St Paul 5-2 Friday and N. St. Paul 7-2 last night - I saw the game last night and continue to marvel at the growth of Hannah Brandt's game (she scored before I could even get to my seat on her first shift). Hill is very young in a lot of key positions but liked the top three lines and 6 D I saw playing and McKeever and McGuire are a great senior duo in net! As always 4AA will be great playoff hockey!

Great bunch of players, congrats to all. As always, all are worthy of Ms. Hockey...tough to pick the winner among such a strong group.

Seedings for section 4AA. Should be some excellent games in this tough, competitive section.
Tough section to seed this year. As seems to occur nearly every year, the seeding meeting preceded the determination of the Suburban East champion.

White Bear's mid-season successes have propelled them to a current first place position and the number 1 seed but they must still play and win tonight at number 2 seed Roseville if they are to win the conference championship. Roseville can repeat as conference champions with a home victory.

Meanwhile number 3 seed Stillwater beat both of the top seeds last week and can finish either second or tied for second in the conference with a victory tonight at Mounds View.

Further, the number 1 seed may not be as good a deal this year as number 1 seeds usually hope for as number 4 seed Hill-Murray looks formidable and is sure to be a tough team to eliminate.

If all four advance it shapes up as a great night of semi-final action Tuesday, February 15 at Aldrich Arena.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

Results from Saturday night:

Roseville 4, White Bear Lake 1
Stillwater 5, Mounds View 4

Roseville wins the conference championship, White Bear Lake and Stillwater tie for second a single point behind.

Section tournament begins for all three teams (and for Hill-Murray) next weekend.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

I had read in the high school forum opinions that "the hit" was not accidental, contrary to the WBL coaches opinion. I would tend to support a suspension for a post of this nature on Facebook. A pretty clear example of poor sportsmanship and judgement IMO.

Yes and we all know everything on these forums and on Facebook are the Gods Honest Truth.
