Minnesota Cup

Re: Minnesota Cup

This may be true. However, the Minnesota Hockey Showcase was in addition to the WCHA Final Five. Now that the Final Five will be no more, I think we will see many of the fans that attended that tournament on a regular basis will be filling the seats for the new tournament. I could be wrong, but I am pretty convinced the parties involved will knock this out of the park.

You think SCSU, UMD, BSU and MSUM fans are going to come even when their teams don't play in the tourney? Look at the final five and most of the fans are either UND or Minnesota. yes SCSU and UMD have the next most fans, but they have a chance to be there every year in theory and they still don't have a large turnout. I have gone almost every year since it has been at the X. I won't be going if SCSU is not in it and I am sure I am not alone. For you to just say no matter what this is going to be some huge success with no way to basis for your opinion is silly. If it is done right it could work, but with five teams I don't think they can do it right.

I think the only way this is going to work is if they make it an event, instead of just a tournament. Garner publicity for it. Make it something that even the casual fan will want to go to. Something that you will buy tickets for even if your team isn't in it, just to be part of it. Televise the s**t out of it. Have things to do outside of the arena, make it worth going to besides just hockey. If they can do that, then I think this thing could turn into a huge success. But, if it's just for the diehard fans, I believe it will die out with few fans other than the Gophers showing up.

Re: Minnesota Cup

Hahaha.... Hockey rules at the U of M. Way more fan pressure for the hockey team to succeed.
I'm not sure I agree with this completely. I think there is more of an expectation that the hockey team succeed, but I suspect both within the athletic department and Minnesota's fan base there is a whole lot more pressure (financial and otherwise) to put a winning football program on the field.

Re: Minnesota Cup

Lets see..... If it is a year when BSU is not in it, more than likely they will have a series that weekend anyway. I know I would rather go to the series that BSU is playing in rather than to the X to watch four teams play that aren't BSU. I would venture to guess the same will be true for UMD, SCSU and MSU-M fans in their teams' "off" years.

From a financial standpoint, yes, but there is a lot more (both in amount and how vocal) complaining when the hockey team isn't doing well.

Either way, the premise of the discussion, that the hockey program is going to somehow get hurt by this, is a complete joke.

Re: Minnesota Cup

Just like the Gophers have never said they would never play any of the new WCHA teams again. EXACTLY comparable.

No but Gopher fans sure have made it sound like it is beneath Minnesota to go on the road for any games against former conference mates. Either that or Minnesota just can't afford to go on the road as they have to save the entire athletic department so they must play nearly all non-conference games at home. I might have missed it but UND fans haven't seemed to give off this vibe about going on the road. Other than Tech, no one like Houghton.

Re: Minnesota Cup

You have to remember who you are responding to. His track record on predictions (particularly on the "super conference") has been pretty laughable

Given President Kaler has gone out of his way to mention hockey as an important piece of the puzzle, it is one program we won't have to worry about lacking attention or support.
158 Comments in the Strib about Maturi's firing/reassignment and hardly a word about hockey...

I took this as the hockey program is winning. Not flamming, but you had talent before and wasted it. You are now finally winning and that's great. Still hate the Goofs though.

Oh, no doubt. I was just pointing out to the other guy that the reason there aren't a lot of comments from hockey fans on that Maturi article is because the team is winning right now.

I'm not sure what's more sad... the fact that you even needed to point this out or the fact that somebody apparently thinks a small number of anonymous commentators on a newspaper site is actually evidence of anything. :o
