Minnesota Cup

Re: Minnesota Cup

Well one things for sure... 20 home games, MN Cup at the X, playing all the other Minnesota teams in NC, now the TEN tourney at the X... When the Gophs make the NCAAs they'll be the most rested team with the smallest travelling budget. For the year they'll just ask each kids parent to throw in $15 for gas

Holy cow! I didn't even think it was possible to play all those teams. I never was good at math though.

This sounds like good fun, neat for you guys.

Of course I understand all of the focus on playing your other in-state schools every year. But ****...if the Gophers are locked into 6 non-conference games with other MN schools, plus this tourney, every year, we'll definitely never see them again, either in Colorado or at Mariucci. DU or CC. Shame really.

They'll only have, what, 4 games left per season to schedule? Presumably they'll try and schedule North Dakota occasionally. There's Notre Dame too. I don't see how you've got space for BC/BU. Plus, maybe they'll want to schedule a cupcake every now and then? There's a definite downside to committing to 8 or 9 in-state non-conference games every year.

EDIT: I know I won't make any friends saying this... I get how stuff like this is good for Minnesota. But it also makes me feel better about the NCHC. In this new conference world, scheduling Colorado schools was never going to be anybody's first non-conference choice. Especially the new Big 10 schools, who have other priorities. At least the NCHC provides us some scheduling regularity against quality opponents. Without it, we might not have ever had home games again.

Re: Minnesota Cup

The MN Cup must count as home games for them, or they could never schedule an away series against a MN School or another other school. Maybe they will discontinue the Holiday tourney.

Conference - 20 (10 H)
MN Cup - 2
3 MN Schools - 6 (4 H)
Holiday Classic - 2 (2 H)
1 NC Series - 2 (2 H)
1 Open game - 1 (1 H)

From what I understand the games will count towards Gophers 20 school-mandated home games, and the Mariucci Classic will cease to exist.

Or it could just be that they are changing their view on the home games in light of potential new revenue streams. Presumably, the Big Ten will provide additional revenue streams (otherwise the schools wouldn't have voted for it) and they can afford to lose a pair of home games. If the Minnesota Cup at least makes up for that revenue, they don't need the home games. I would assume the Big Ten conference tourney will end up making more money (half the teams to split the revenue with) as long as they draw half as many fans at the gate. And for MN, they can come out of this looking like the knight in shining armor if they can help the other MN schools thrive. As much as I've heard bad about the Big Ten, I think that it's going to be a win-win for the Gophers.

I would say the other MN school will qualify as "cupcakes":p;) lol

Here's one way they could do it....

Clearly the Gophers play in the Minnesota Cup every year.

UMD, MSU, BSU & SCSU rotate, with one school left out.

The school left out gets a two game home series with the Gophers which will help make up the money of not being in the Minnesota Cup.

The school that plays the Gophers in the 1st round doesn't play the Gophers in any other games that season.

The two schools in the other side of the bracket; one plays a home & home with the Gophers & the other visits Mariucci for a two game series.

Equals 8 nonconference games for the Gophers. Two at Xcel, three on the road & three at home.

Every school gets a two game Gopher visit every four years & a one game visit every four years. In other words they get a Gopher visit every other year.
I hate to quote myself because its so tacky, but Don & Joel must read USCHO....

Props to the Gophers for doing the right thing.

The Gophers will be in Minnesota's Beanpot -- a name for it has not been chosen -- every year. Their first-round opponent will be the one Minnesota team they do not have a series scheduled with that season.

Lucia said the Gophers will have a two-game nonconference series with the other three Minnesota teams, either at home or away. That ensures the Gophers will play all four of the other state teams every season.

Re: Minnesota Cup

I don't think so. In the case of MSU and SCSU, I think they are going to consist of a combination of home-and-home series and potentially a series that is is at the Mooch. The impression that I have been getting is that it will be home-and-homes for 3 years for every year it's at the Mooch. I don't know if that's changed, but that was the stance that MSU was taking previously.

As a SCSU fan that is good enough for me. I had heard that Motzko and Lucia had been talking about home and home series most years, but didn't know all the details. What you are saying makes sense.

I agree MN looks great in how they are handling this situation. John Marriucci and Herb Brooks would be very proud of the way they are handling all this. :)

Re: Minnesota Cup

4 games at Mariucci vs. MN teams
2 games at Xcel vs. MN teams
2 away games vs MN teams

That's what I would suspect it will look like for the Gophers. They will need to keep open two of their 4 NC travel games for the deals they make with schools such as Notre Dame or BU/BC types. That means 18 games at Mariucci, 2 at Xcel.
