Minnesota Cup

Re: Minnesota Cup

Were you a college hockey fan before SCSU joined the fray? Having been at the old Mariucci in the late 70s and 80s before the SCSU and Mankatos were around, the fan interest was very high. The only difference is they didn't have 10 different message boards to discuss things on.

I was a college hockey fan before I went to SCSU, but college hockey was not as popular and sure wasn't covered as much in the 80's. I use to usher Gopher games at the old arena and did gopher basketball as well in the late 80's. Hockey fans in our state have always liked college hockey, but with cable TV and internet things are a lot different now. That media presence really fueled the in state match ups and helped the sport grow.

Re: Minnesota Cup

I was thinking the same thing. Ever since I was a kid going to the mooch through the 70's and 80's the place was jam packed. I dont see that changing any time soon.

 I said they would always sell out every game..... My point was so many more people became college hockey fans and many of whom became huge college hockey fans that were not before. I guarantee over the years in places like St. Cloud and Mankato there are tons of locals and students who become big fans that never would have been if they didn't have D1 teams in the WCHA. Those people helped make the college hockey vibe in the state so much more than was in the past.

Re: Minnesota Cup

Weird stat that the Beanpot at 17k+ as the picture on the front page sure had a lot of empty seats.

From what I understand they split a certain amount of the seats between schools. So I am sure when a lot of people are only at the games where their team plays. One of the cool things about the final five is most of the people go to the night games even if their team is not playing..

Re: Minnesota Cup

Wow, was talking to some tUMD fans in Madison and at the time I was defending the Goofs for them saying they'd play everyone and the tUMD fans said they didn't believe it. Then when the comment said the tourney was the way they could keep playing everyone, I started to sweat my defense of them, but holy hell... Now here comes the question... Will people play the Gophers at Mariucci two out of three series? Still better than I would have expected a couplke years ago. Hats off to whoever pulled this off

Re: Minnesota Cup

Well I guess all the people who said the Gophers won't play the instate teams were wrong. I guess money doesn't mean everything...... Lucia deserve a lot of credit for all this and this shows a lot class. :)

Sounds like a certain UMD blogger needs to apologize. Ha. "I love it when a plan comes together."

Re: Minnesota Cup

Go ahead and stick your head in the sand. If your program isn't visible now, playing a single game *possibly* against the Gophers isn't going to change that. They sure as heck won't be visible in the years when they're playing the early game against MSUM or Bemidji (I'm going to assume the tournament won't be organized such that conference opponents would be scheduled to play each other on the first day, but that may be an unsafe assumption.)

I'm laughing my azz off at anyone who thinks schools are going to walk away with equal checks.

I love the Pavlovian response I get from certain posters. They see I've posted, don't bother to read what I've written, and start yapping like little rabid dogs. It's good to be the queen.

Queen of what? The attention whores? Every time you post the only thing that comes to my mind is that this individual needs to be slapped back to reality.

Re: Minnesota Cup

The Gophers will be in Minnesota's Beanpot -- a name for it has not been chosen -- every year. Their first-round opponent will be the one Minnesota team they do not have a series scheduled with that season.

Lucia said the Gophers will have a two-game nonconference series with the other three Minnesota teams, either at home or away. That ensures the Gophers will play all four of the other state teams every season.
I guess the other MN School fans will have to find something else to complain about now.

I don't think so. In the case of MSU and SCSU, I think they are going to consist of a combination of home-and-home series and potentially a series that is is at the Mooch. The impression that I have been getting is that it will be home-and-homes for 3 years for every year it's at the Mooch. I don't know if that's changed, but that was the stance that MSU was taking previously.
