Minnesota at North Dakota - Get Your Riot Gear

Re: Minnesota at North Dakota - Get Your Riot Gear

The reason why the gophers fan thinks its b.S. that the Sioux got a penalty out of the deal is because Malone committed a much more dangerous and deliberate blow. One that should have had an immediate ejection and one game suspension with the five minute major...

You want a guy suspended for a legal hit? The ref was right there and watched the hit. Just because someone gets hit hard doesn't mean it's a penalty.

Re: Minnesota at North Dakota - Get Your Riot Gear

The hit wasn't that bad. Look you can quote the boarding and charging rule and apply either one to every single hit that happens in a game. Every hit is not a major penalty. It's hockey and guys get hit hard. I actually felt bad for wehrs though, when he started bobbling that puck you just knew he was going to get wacked. Malone is probably the best forechecker in the WCHA there was no way he was not going to hit wehrs on that play.

That being said I don't really know how UND came out of it with a PP.

The gopher fans should be proud their team actually showed some life last night. It was a great game and should be again tonight.

I am thinking black jersey's tonight. UND can't be swept by MN in their own rink!

Re: Minnesota at North Dakota - Get Your Riot Gear

But it didn't occur after the horn. Take a look at the time in the screencap when initial contact was made. And if you watch the video, the horn sounds AFTER Wehrs is down on the ice.

Initial contact - 00.6 seconds on the clock

Honestly, the ref had a pretty good view of the hit.

Don't let facts get in the way. I thought the hit was clean but I would have been ok with a 2:00min boarding penalty, which would have defused the scrum. Thought the gophers played really well last night with good stick work knocking pucks away all night. Sioux looked a bit off, and two turnovers in their own zone ended up costing them 2 goals. Hopefully the game tonight is as good as last night, except with the sioux comming out on top!

Re: Minnesota at North Dakota - Get Your Riot Gear

If the NCAA wants to be serious about preventing head injuries, Malone will be sitting out tonight's game. If they want to send a message they'll tack on an additional game for it happening after the horn. Sheppard needs to be suspended as well, the big ice brawl could have been prevented if the officials immediately kicked Malone out of the game and added the five minute major. That was the right call, throwing a guy viciously head first into the boards after the horn had sounded is not only boarding, but roughing and clearly fits the conditions for escalating consequences. This is really isn't disputable, unless you want to let these two teams go free range assault against each other. If that's the case then I'm all for Sachetti going NHL 2K tomahawk on Kristo, Frattin giving Jacob Cepis a back breaker, or Helgeson/Genoway choke slamming anyone that goes near the net.

This is completely over the top and not even accurate. The hit did not come after the horn.

Re: Minnesota at North Dakota - Get Your Riot Gear

I hate UND, but that was not a "dirty" hit. 2:00 for boarding at the very most. If I were a Gophers fan, I'd be more concerned with Wehrs not having his head up to prepare for the hit.

Re: Minnesota at North Dakota - Get Your Riot Gear

Absolutly a dirty illegal hit[/QUOTE]

No it's not, even Ciskie say's it not so we are good...
By letter of the law, there's simply the question of whether Wehrs was "thrown violently into the boards."

Tough call, but given some of the things I've seen over the years, I have a hard time labeling this as either a dirty hit or an obvious penalty. It's neither of those things.

Of course, given Malone's reputation among some who follow this league, it's probably the worst thing ever done on a sheet of ice.

Re: Minnesota at North Dakota - Get Your Riot Gear

The Wehrs hit should have been called for sure!! Overall it was the best game I have watch in a long time as far as entertainment purposes, tonight should be a battle for sure. If the gophers can block shots and play a physical game they have a legitmate chance to win again tonight.

Re: Minnesota at North Dakota - Get Your Riot Gear

Great game last night, although I would have preferred a different outcome. I really didn't expect Minny to show up with a men's hockey team rather than the traveling ringette troupe they usually bring. And it's so funny to hear so many gopher posters hard-wired to call the Sioux a bunch of goons while crowing about a game where their team played the same physical style and won.

Can't wait for the puck to drop tonight.

Looks like a textbook boarding call to me. Look at Hansen applying a rear naked choke on Forbort. He was about to put him to sleep. I've seen a couple of Hansen's USHL fight videos. He's a tough kid.
