Minnesota at North Dakota - Get Your Riot Gear

Re: Minnesota at North Dakota - Get Your Riot Gear

We must have watched a different game. The Sioux played very well. The Gophers just played slightly better. Again, if you want to continue to trash your team, I'll let you, but I just saw a completely different game than you.
He's got more self loathing than anyone I've ever seen.

However, I do see his point - it's difficult to have a lot of confidence in the team when it's impossible to guess the type of effort/play they will demonstrate from week to week. After all, this is the team that: got swept at home by UNO, got swept on the road by Mankato, got one effing point at home against UW, and lost/tied against Union/Ferris State in the Mariucci classic. OTOH, they took 3 points against UMD, swept CC on the road, beat Michigan, and just took game one in Grand Forks against a team that is likely to finish top two in the league.

The Gophers have the potential to beat good teams and to become one themselves - but based on what I've seen so far, every time they take a step in the direction of becoming good, they falter / **** the bed. Plus there is no question their special teams need to improve significantly if they are to have any hope in winning enough games to get a sniff of the NCAA tourney in a couple months.

Re: Minnesota at North Dakota - Get Your Riot Gear

If the Gophers consistently play the way they did tonight they'll be very scary come March/April.

Scary? I don't think they'll be scary but they have potential to shock some teams. UND, especially Malone, had some awesome looks, put a lot of pucks on net, but couldn't bury the puck simply because Patterson was hot and the ultimate reason the Gophers won tonight. They outplayed the Gophers in the 2nd and a good part of the third. The Gopher D could not clear the zone, left guys open in front and streaking through the slot, created errant passes and turnovers in the D zone and took way too many penalties. That's a recipe for disaster and if they do it again tonight...the game will belong to UND.

What they did well was match UND's intensity for 60 minutes, got the early lead, kept it, played a good physical game and silenced the crowd a bit. If the Gophers get behind the eight ball they're usually in trouble. This is not a good comeback team. I suspect UND will be smelling Gopher blood all night and day tomorrow in preparation for the rematch. If UND takes the early lead, tonight's game will be a blowout for the Sioux.

Is this thing on YouTube yet? I wasnt able to watch, only heard Wally & Glen go on about it. of course Hakstol had paid the refs and was seen talking to some red guy with horns and a tail, but I'd like to see what happened on the ice.

Re: Minnesota at North Dakota - Get Your Riot Gear

Holy crap. Didn't see that coming. Let's see if they really shock me and put forth that kind of effort two days in a row.

Re: Minnesota at North Dakota - Get Your Riot Gear

Now that the Gopher Freshamen have learned how to beat the thug sue at their own game, maybe we will see a very chippy game tonight. Hopefully hextall can double his output, and get called for 6 penalties. and, if the refs were to read this:

Boarding
SECTION 3. A player shall not body check, cross-check, elbow, charge or
trip an opponent from the front or side in such a manner that causes the
opponent to be thrown violently into the boards (see 6-23).

Excellent analysis. I couldn't have said it better.

Is there a rule for tackling...because that's what I saw at the beginning of the second. It was the most lopsided reffing in a period that I've ever seen...and it really turned the game around. I absolutely cannot stand when the refs get in the way of a good game and ruin it...just glad MN was able to hang on.

That confirms it right there. Horrible call.

Thank you. Exactly right. Oh, and it's one point against Wisconsin with a 6-0 drubbing that I happened to attend. A game that I attended right after a friday night against SCSU who sucks this year that they lost 5-2 going down by 5 before they scored.

Hey if they manage to do something this year that would be awesome.

The Gophers deserve two wins for beating the Sioux and refs. It's amazing how the Gophers always have the refs against them. I mean how dare the refs call penalties on the Gophers and miss ones on the Sioux? That's just not fair!

The hit on Wehrs falls into this category the refs blew this easy call which is what led to the fisticuffs at the end of the period. Also how the Sue got a PP after all that is beyond belief grats to the Gophers for beating Sue and the refs.

Re: Minnesota at North Dakota - Get Your Riot Gear

I have no dog in this fight...thought the Malone hit on Wehrs was clean (get your head up Kevin). By the letter of the law, ya, it's boarding, but I don't think that *should* be a penalty.

Yes, it was terrible how the refs tried to cheat the Gophers at every turn! This never happens to teams except the Gophers! Why do the officials hate the Gophers? :(

Re: Minnesota at North Dakota - Get Your Riot Gear

It is so much easier to get a split on the road when you win on Friday night.

Re: Minnesota at North Dakota - Get Your Riot Gear

From an outsider's perspective with no rooting interest, this game last night was tremendous to watch. Gophers looked ready for a fight and the Sioux seemed to sleep for the first period. UND should smoke them next time I'd imagine.

If UND doesn't win by at least five goals tonight, it's an epic failure on their part, and they should promptly forfeit all remaining games and fold the program.

Re: Minnesota at North Dakota - Get Your Riot Gear

To the Gopher fans complaining about the Sioux coming out of the scrum with a powerplay, you can blame Jacob Cepis. He was given a Slashing penalty for holding his stick to MacWilliam's neck for a solid 10 seconds or so. At one point in the video you can see someone on the Sioux bench (trainer?) reach for the stick trying to pull it away from MacWilliam's neck and Cepis refuses to let go.

I'm fine with the Gophers standing up for themselves, but holding a stick to your opponent's neck and vigorously pulling back is a bit excessive. He's lucky he didn't injure him.

Re: Minnesota at North Dakota - Get Your Riot Gear

If the NCAA wants to be serious about preventing head injuries, Malone will be sitting out tonight's game. If they want to send a message they'll tack on an additional game for it happening after the horn. Sheppard needs to be suspended as well, the big ice brawl could have been prevented if the officials immediately kicked Malone out of the game and added the five minute major. That was the right call, throwing a guy viciously head first into the boards after the horn had sounded is not only boarding, but roughing and clearly fits the conditions for escalating consequences. This is really isn't disputable, unless you want to let these two teams go free range assault against each other. If that's the case then I'm all for Sachetti going NHL 2K tomahawk on Kristo, Frattin giving Jacob Cepis a back breaker, or Helgeson/Genoway choke slamming anyone that goes near the net.

That happens in every scrum. Every single one that occurs which makes it hardly excessive. The reason why the gophers fan thinks its b.S. that the Sioux got a penalty out of the deal is because Malone committed a much more dangerous and deliberate blow. One that should have had an immediate ejection and one game suspension with the five minute major. Not saying that Cepis was a hero and didn't deserve his time in the box, but to blame him is utter insanity. He stood up for a teammate, because the official didn't do his job. That's why the gophers blame the officials and have every right to do so. This is pure hogwash, Malone was luck Wehrs is a tough dude who is crazy stupid. If that guy ends up paralyzed, Malone gets arrested and kicked out of college hockey. Don't even pretend what Cepis did was any where near the foul committed by Malone, you just end up looking like a homer with no clue.
