Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

I want that win so bad on Senior night. It will also be the last CCHA game in Michigan history.

"GOALIE RECRUITING

Per a post by Michael Spath at The Wolverine on their message board, Michigan did not get a goalie commit coming off last weekend. Spath had mentioned before when Daniel Milne left that U-M might look overseas to fill the void and another poster in the same thread said, “Is it no commitment this weekend or are they unlikely to get a commitment at all from a goalie from Sweden?” so there’s your answer where they were targeting. I fully approve of more Swedes on the team.

Spath also said there’s a chance one of the goalies won’t be back next season (I think you can do the math on who that is)."

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

I'm not a believer yet. We still had 3 goals against in both games. While I liked seeing the puck possesion and crisp passes, how much of that was our offense vs. aOSU not playing good defense? We can't rely on the offense to get 4 or 5 goals against Miami or Notre Dame (should we get that far).

Get some points against Ferris, earn a home series and then I'll try to believe. It's great to see some wins, it's great to beat aOSU in any sport, it's great to get the road sweep, it's great to see what we all believe to be "Michigan hockey". But at this point, the question is how long can we keep the season going?

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

I'm with wT at the moment. It's great that we scored 11 goals this weekend, but after seeing the replay- the 6 we gave up were not so hot.

The goaltending has to be better on breakaways, and the D still shows signs of panic.

Better- certainly. Had we gotten this improvement in December, as we normally get- we'd be in much better shape. As it stands, after this weekend, we have to take 4 of 6 games and THEN win 2 in a row. We may have done it in '10, but each year is different.

At this stage, all four of the netminders could leave. Racine is an adequate back-up. Dwyer hasn't seen any time but has dressed and Janny/Rutledge have blown their repeated chances, IMO.

With everyone except Clare healthy on the blueline, the defense doesn't have room for excuses, either- even with a walk-on getting a regular shift.

Both of these areas provide huge questions next season.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

It feels like a month since I last walked into Yost. Oh...that's because it has been a month.

Questions for tonight/tomorrow:
Will all the students have already left for Spring Break?
Will we see the team that played last weekend at aOSU?
Will we go up 3 - 1 on Ferris only to let them tie the game? (Which was better than the 5-0 loss we had to them in the first game in Big Rapids.)
Has Ferris State decided if their school color is maroon or red?
Can anyone correctly pronounce "Ewigleben" and does anyone care?
And frighteningly: Will this be our last weekend playing at Yost for 2012-2013?

1. I would assume yes, since (I heard) these games were not part of the student ticket package. Don't know if that is true.

2. Hopefully we will see the same effort and offensive execution. Still too many mistakes defensively and goaltending is a game to game proposition. I think OSU, albeit with their top line still scoring, basically threw their sticks on the ice expecting Michigan to be an easy six points. Ferris won't allow Michigan the space through the neutral zone and will match our intensity. We basically manhandled the Buckeyes physically and to the puck and they hardly reacted.
Plus, their all-everything goaltender didn't show up.

3. Ferris doesn't quit, give them credit for coming back at home. I'd like to think we can protect a lead- but we didn't last weekend either. We simply outscore opponents, not necessarily defend our leads.

4. I would defer to our resident Bulldog, Hammer on that one.

5. Unless we have to go back to Gumbydome, I don't care.

6. I think our chances are brighter than this time last weekend. The destiny is mostly in our hands. Chances of sweeping Ferris are better at Yost, but I am thinking split. Can we get help from Notre Dame (BG) and NMU (LSSU)? maybe. Both of the teams ahead of us in the standings are on the road. A NMU sweep means that WE have to sweep also, though. We could end up tied with BG if they get swept and we split and NMU/LSSU splits. BUT, since they have the tiebreaker, that won't work either. We need help and need to help ourselves. I would rate the chance to host at about 50-50 right now. Let's see after friday's games. If we get swept, it won't matter what anyone else does.

Edit: And we can only blame ourselves if we do end up on the road. Losing home games to Miami (1), ND (2), Alaska (2), BG (1) and WMU (1) is the reason we are where we are. The WMU, Miami and ND games were hard fought losses that were decided by poor goaltending and poor defensive zone coverage. There was no excuse for losing to BG in the manner we did- most embarrassing loss of the season, and Alaska proved that they were just better that weekend. I'd say we wasted at least 6-9 points by playing uninspired, heartless hockey.

Edit II: Oh, and if that wasn't rosy enough, IF we earn home ice in the first round AND if we win that series, we have the prospect of going to 1. Miami as the 8th seed 2. ND/WMU as the 7th seed for the quarterfinal series.

Sorry I missed the game live, but we had our reason...

Anyway, they looked pretty good- scoring is getting more effective, and the D is getting *better*- but it's not where I think we will sweep our way into the tournament.

We've seen nights like that in the net- but this would be the first time we had it after two wins. Racine looked a lot more confident- it's good that he's getting into his own head.

Still had the few min where the D started to look desperate- but this time, Ferris didn't get any shots- so that's certainly better.

And I have to say, I like PDG's penalty at the end of the game- finally showing some emotion out there.

Positive, for sure.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

I noticed that our forecheck and backcheck is much better- more gap control between the defensemen. Racine was solid. I don't know about Trouba's two penalties, I think the officials are whistle happy when it comes to that kid. Otherwise, a disciplined game that kept the Ferris PP in check. It seems to be their x-factor when it comes to offense.

I thought we owned the first period, got lucky in the second and got stronger in the third.

Both teams still have incentive tomorrow. Ferris can tie OSU and owns the tiebreaker. We can win and hope BG loses to get a home ice spot. A Laker win, a BG loss and our own win can move us to 7th.

We own the tie breaker on LSSU, but lose it to BG and NMU, so any ties in the standings with the latter two will result in a lower seed.

Poor Sparty has to go to Alaska. :p

We don't completely own the tiebreaker with LSSU. If LSSU and Michigan tie at 35 points (Michigan tie SO loss, and LSSU wins, then LSSU owns the tiebreaker. They will have 11 CCHA wins, to Michigan 10 CCHA. If LSSU ties and wins the SO, and Michigan loses, then Michigan-LSSU would be tied. In that case, a Michigan-LSSU only tie would got to Michigan (GD). If BGSU is involved BGSU gets the top spot among the tied teams, then Michigan, the LSSU.

Michigan needs to win or win a shootout to assure home ice next weekend. Anything else and you are leaving too much up to other people.

If Michigan can nab the #7 seed they would play the NMU-LSSU loser, or shootout loser in AA. They played both teams in the UP the first meetings, so a home game would be big.

If Michigan gets the #8 seed they would play either the NMU-LSSU winner.

If Michigan gets the #9 seed they could play at BGSU or at the NMU-LSSU winner.

Michigan can't drop below the 9th seed.

We could end up in a second round series with any of the top 3 teams. First place is still a 3 team race with 1 night left. If ND wins, Miami loses, and WMU loses or goes to a SO, then ND wins the CCHA top spot. It is possible to have a 3 way tie atop the CCHA this season, and in that case ND, by virtue of wins, would win the CCHA title (17 wins, to 16 and 15 for Miami and WMU).

Miami could drop to #3 if ND and WMU both win and they lose to OSU.

The only things for certain about the CCHA playoffs are that MSU goes to Alaska in round 1, and Ferris will play OSU (site TBD) in round 2. Everything else comes down to the final regular season game.

Having watched the game on TV- I had thought the first one was clean, too- but the replay clearly showed Jacob raising his arm to meet the head- pretty easy eblow call. The second one was close, but, as you say, the officials are playing him pretty close. It's not as if he's not tried to lay a lot of people out over the season- he's just missed more often than hitting....

The first call was borderline. He never left his feet and raised his arm in anticipation of taking a stick in the chops. Size will do that. He also bolted cross ice to get into Pochmara's face and was barely held off by the linesman. He was ****ed- I'm sure Red told the team to stay out of the box- it is really one of the main reasons FSU produces any offense outside of their top line and defensive pairing. Sure enough it cost them, but just as lucky, Moffie took that xchecking call that would have put them up 5x3 anyway.

The second call on Trouba was b.s. and both players should have gone off for roughing.

What the cameras probably didn't show that we could see away from the puck was the constant effort by Ferris to obstruct, trip, hold etc. especially after whistles. Trouba skated away a couple of times from scrums in front of FSU's net when there were blatant attempts to get him to take a retalliatory shot back at a guy jabbing or grabbing at him. Most of this was after the game was settled, but still it wasn't the best game Pochmara has called- he almost lost control at the end. His partner is useless.

I think this is the area Jacob has improved the most- keeping his head, not compromising his partner to make a big hit and doing less pinching.

The two guys that nearly got "trapped" last night were Bennett and Merrill- causing odd man rushes that good backchecking broke up.

To chapmaja:

Thanks for the corrections. On your first point, the odds are minor that LSSU will retain a tiebreaker. I wasn't going into your detail, but it is a good point.

On your second point, I was making a giant assumption that Miami isn't going to crap the bed against the Buckeyes. They have played each other very tight this season, so I guess OSU matches up pretty well and Hjelle is back to his regular form. I also assumed WMU would sweep Sparty, especially with a chance to win their first ever CCHA regular season title. Rooting for ND to beat BGSU is like sucking lemons all night, but I'll do it, even if that means they sneak in and win the title. I didn't discount WMU/ND from that chance- I just didn't think Miami would get swept by OSU in Oxford.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

One other note: According to posters in the Ferris thread, the Wolverines will play the Bulldogs the next three seasons- next year at Yost, then in Big Rapids, then back at Yost.

Looks like Wolverine Trumpet will still have to pronounce Ewigleben.

Ya know, back in 2010 we were also the 7-seed. Just sayin'...
