Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Not the most satisfying win, well, except between the pipes. They looked pretty good, but so many chances that they could bury. Whew.

7th isn't bad when we were looking at 10th a few weeks ago.

I'm still not pleased with it, nothing but 1st is acceptable, however it could be worse. At least we're not sparty...

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

One other note: According to posters in the Ferris thread, the Wolverines will play the Bulldogs the next three seasons- next year at Yost, then in Big Rapids, then back at Yost.

Looks like Wolverine Trumpet will still have to pronounce Ewigleben.

Good,

I think Michigan should still try to play Ferris and WMU as much as possible the next few years. Michigan will play their B1G rivals the next few years, but I don't think wants to lose contact with the other schools in the state as well. It is good from a travel standpoint for Ferris, LSSU, WMU and NMU to play Michigan instead of going west or east for a NC series. There is also a rivalry factor that will continue in the future. the other Michigan schools will still have to look up at Michigan and MSU as the big in-state schools (even if not powers in hockey). Any chance to upstage the instate power is a good chance and must be taken.

The boys are pretty happy, believe me. No they could not sing (unless Red considers a SO win a real win/sweep) but they climbed as far out of the hole as they could. It's a new season: NMU (talking to Trouba after, he's real excited) and then hopefully on to shock ND in SB.

Racine was flat our stone cold unconscious tonight. Only a fluke goal beat him. And yes, many chances to score, spend too much time looking for the extra pass. Motte was really good too. Kevin Lynch was a beast.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

I have to say, I'm pretty happy about the change of play- with a night of thinking about it.

We almost had a big change a few weeks ago with a pair of wins over MSU, but I know I'm not the only one who noticed that the games were two games between bad teams. Reality struck against ND.

Then two weeks off, and a pair of games against OSU. I wish I saw them live, but we were on a big ship that weekend. Noting the scores- the D was better, Racine was better, and the offense was very good. Better than anything- with OSU scoring, the mental aspect of the game didn't collapse, and they kept playing.

Friday, you could see a big change- the passing became crisp, the offensive pressure became stonger, and the defense didn't collapse when they had in the past. And I think that Racine's mental state was in good shape thanks to the rest of the team. Not what we normally expect of our goalies, but so much better than we've seen all season.

Then we had last night. Can't say the D was hugely better, but they did good- passed the puck *better* than past. BUT- Racine was where we needed him to be. Sure, Ferris missed a lot of shots- but IMHO- that's a two way mental street- if a goalie is playing well, shooters over think. He seemed to really get under the head of Ferris shooters, as they missed some great chances. He really stood on his head.

So I said the D wasn't prefect- but they did move the puck really well. And the offense really was into the game- except the shooing. So *most* of the mental aspects were feeding off of each other. Pretty nice to see the TEAM play more like teams we've seen in the last 22 years.

The big question now- do they have at least 6 more wins in them, only allowing a loss in the first two weekends? Margin of error is thin. As have been pointed out, we've done it before. We got a BIG boost from what was a good MSU team in a free fall. Can we get that again? Going to be tough, but if they make it into the NCAA's- it will be epic.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Did everyone enjoy Ferris playing with 7 for the last 30 seconds of overtime (and it wasn't the only time they played with an extra player last night)? I almost my s---- and my wife had to contain me. I heard that Pi was in the house tonight to see that display and the reemed the officials after the game.

That explains the delayed penalty that was going to be called at the end of OT. (they didn't say anything on TV)

I was wondering why it was so hard to gain control at the end of OT? 7 skaters against 5 is the reason. Wonder if they had two guys jump over when Motte went to the bench?

Why didn't they call it? Having to put a skater that was on the ice in the box could have had an effect on the shoot-out for Ferris.

The game ended.

One of those interesting lack of impact of a penalty. BTW, the bench could have chosen anyone. But your point is correct- if it were a personal penalty, that person would still be able to shoot.

My men's league team won tonight. We thus play for the championship on Sunday at 6:30. Michigan had better not need to play in the Sunday game....

I would have to think about which game I would be at.

Lee Moffie (who was one of the d-men on the ice at the end of OT) said on twitter (in reference to The Michigan Daily's Matt Slovin's comments about Ferris playing with 7 guys for the last 30 seconds) 'oh, good that should make video on monday alot more explainable!' (I think Red will understand now, Lee.)

Great effort this weekend. Passing was off saturday, but Ferris really stepped up their game. Not that many quality chances. Seems like this was a game that we would lose in the last five minutes (like Notre Dame) and didn't because of our goaltending. All in all, regardless of the officiating, the outcome was fair. We got what we wanted and Ferris really pushed for the win. Too bad they got chippy, bad form IMO.

That's what I was told happened.

Count the number of players starting at 1:29...

Thanks for posting that. I went home to watch my recording and count for myself, only to find I had tried to record off a channel I don't get, instead of finding FSN Detroit to record off.

Oh well, we still finished 7th and the extra point or extra W wouldn't do anything, since our RPI doesn't matter. All it does is further prove the incompetence of certain CCHA officials.

Onwards to next weekend. Racine looked good and made some great saves and was in the right position to block some of those screened shots I doubt he saw. Hopefully he has found some confidence. As a team we allowed just two goals on the entire weekend. That's more than a goal under our 3.4 GAA (for a game).

I still don't think there will be more than a couple weekends of Michigan hockey left this season. But, it's nice to have this improvement and start seeing the team we knew was hiding somewhere.

It will be interesting to see just how much Piotrowski likes them when they apply for reffing jobs in the Big Ten! I believe Anastos doesn't like them nearly as much as MSU coach as he did as commish!

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

According to a story in the Michigan Daily, Pi said that the league would have disallowed the goal. Red said that the 7th player was on the ice at least 28 seconds.

I have my doubts about how the league would have handled it. Hindsight carries little pressure.

How would they have disallowed that goal after the fact?

Apparently the officiating crew "knew" after time expired that FSU had too many players on the ice. They would have huddled and waived it off and then proceeded to a shootout. At least that is the impression our beat reporter received. I am highly skeptical that it would have been that simple. Those clowns let the play continue a good :30 with 7 on the ice- and if "they knew" they should have blown it dead immediately, penalizing Ferris for the remaining time.

if they knew about it then the penalty should have been stopped right away. I dont see how they would have explained that they knew but let the play go on.
