Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

I just checked the CCHA standing going in to the final two weeks. I see M is 5 points behind the lakers for the last first round home ice slot. WIth the remaining game I don't see any way they can make up the difference meaning Blue will not be at home for their first round. Notice I said THEIR first round, not THE first round. I am curious but not to the point of spending the time it would take to find the last time THAT occurred. Can anyone answer that question?

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Have I mentioned my dislike of Ohio*?

Considering this morning's lovely weather, I'm glad to not be traveling to the games this weekend. Some friends had originally discussed going, but I saved most of my travel this year for CCHA teams we may no longer be visiting. There will still be plenty of chances to visit Columbus and East Lansing.

*please note, any reference by wT to "Ohio" is in reference to the entire state. She will use "Ohio University" if she means the Bobcats, and will not insult the Bobcats by calling that other "school" Ohio. Some variant of "aOSU" "tOSU" "*****eyes" will be used when referring to that other "school". Also, why does USCHO asterisk out * uckeyes?

Without looking, I would gander that it was around 1985-86 when the team went 12-26. Or possibly the next year when I think they only won 14 games. I'll check and revise.

Okay, here is the history, at least under Red- in the CCHA:

These are all years preceding the start of the NCAA tournament streak.
Keep in mind from 1984-1990 that the CCHA had only 9 teams, including Illinois-Chicago. No Alaska. Top 8 teams made the CCHA tournament. It was a best of 3 in quarters. The dominant teams were MSU, LSSU & BG.

1984-85 13-26-1, 11-20-1 CCHA (T 7th) Lost in CCHA Quarterfinals @ #2 LSSU 3-1, 7-6.

1985-86 12-26-0 10-22-0 CCHA (8th) Lost in CCHA Quarterfinals @ #1 MSU 4-3, 5-2. Brad Jones was 24-30-54 that season.

1986-87 14-25-1 11-20-1 CCHA (7th) Lost in CCHA Quarterfinals @ #2 MSU 8-7 (ot), 6-3 Brad Jones was 26-41-67 that season.

1987-88 22-19-0 17-15-0 CCHA (5th) Lost in CCHA Quarterfinals @ #2 WMU 5-4 (win), 4-3, 10-0. Warren Sharples was a freshman.

1988-89 22-15-4 17-11-4 CCHA (4th) Lost in CCHA Quarterfinals (Yost) #5 BGSU 6-4, 4-1 (win), 3-2 (3ot) Danny Felsner, Myles O'Connor, Todd Brost, Warren Sharples

1989-90 24-12-6 16-11-5 CCHA (4th) WON in CCHA Quarterfinals (Yost) 5-3, 8-2 vs. #5 WMU; Lost in Semi-finals to #1 MSU 4-3 (ot) Beat #3 BGSU in 3rd place game 5-4
Team had Mark Ouimet, David Roberts, Pat Neaton & Warren Sharples.

In the 1990-91 season, Michigan qualified for the NCAA tourney and beat Cornell in three games at home.

This season will mark the first time EVER since the expansion of the CCHA to more than nine teams, that Michigan will go on the road for the first round of the CCHA playoffs.

From 1990-91 to 1991-92 there were only 9 teams.

In 1992-93, Kent State, Notre Dame (WCHA) and Alaska (affiliate member) were added to make 12 teams, including Illinois-Chicago.

UAF did not participate as a conference member but was part of the CCHA tourney and lost to #6 seed FSU. The #1 & 2 seeds, if they won their first round games, got byes to the semifinals.

In 1993-94 Berenson won his first CCHA tourney championship under this format.

In 1994-95, Kent State dropped hockey. 11 teams participated in the tourney with UAF still an affiliate.

In 1995-96 UAF is granted membership. Still 11 teams. Red wins his first NC.

In 1996-97, Illinois-Chicago drops hockey. 10 teams participate in the tourney with a 1-10 2-9 format for first round games. Top two seeds advance to semi's. Michigan loses to BU in the National Semi-finals after being a unanimous #1 all season.

In 1997-98 Michigan wins the NC with 11 freshmen, even though MSU won the CCHA. NMU joins the CCHA from the WCHA increasing the CCHA to 11 teams.

In 1999-2000, UNO is granted membership to increase the league to 12 teams.

In 2010-11, UNO leaves to join the WCHA, dropping the league back to 11 teams.

Edit: With the introduction of UNO as the 12th team, the CCHA decided to change the playoff format from a 1-10, 2-9 etc. first round format which promoted the top four seeds automatically to the semi's and did not have the 11th team qualify. Instead, the top four seeds got byes to a second round home match-up, and the 5-12 seeds played in the first round. The winners advanced to the semi's. When UNO left, the format was changed to the current format where the top 5 teams get first round byes and host 2nd round match-ups with the winners moving on to the semi's.

For literally the first time this year we played Michigan Hockey tonight (5-3 win over ohio in cowlumbus). Well not quite for a complete 60 minutes but I'd say 55 minutes. However, the couple defensive break-downs had almost immediate answers. Giving up the shortie was not nice and yes I received the feeling "Oh no, here we go again." Thankfully Michigan answered a number of seconds later. But then ohio answered a few seconds after that, but again michigan responded (Granted empty net but still). It wasn't easy but it was a quality road win. Granted, it won't matter in terms of RPI (we're already guaranteed not to receive an at-large bid) but if we can take at least 3 of the last 4 games which are against quality competition another run similar to 2010 is not out of the quesyion. I'm hoping that the guys finally received the message. We'll see how they react tomorrow. If ohios goalie (Jhelle) did play so spectactular, this game could have been out of reach early.

Yeah, 55 minutes is about right. It looked like the boys were all over the bucks the first two periods. Surprised me, considering what is at stake for OSU in the standings. They got a break with Alaska losing to Sparty, but their loss also helped Ferris.

Goaltending is frustrating. So good in spurts, then the turnovers and goaltending lapses happen. Hopefully they can match OSU's intensity tonight since it is senior night. Would be nice to think we could sneak up into a first round playoff home series. I think a sweep would help- and then a chance at taking points at home next weekend from Ferris.

I wouldnt say they were all over the buckeyes in the first. The 1st was pretty even but the 2nd was all Michigan ohio state was lucky to be only down 2-0 after 2 periods. Congrats on your win as much as it pains me to say your team deserved to win last night. I expect a much better balanced game from the buckeyes tonight knowing they need to win this game to have a real chance at home ice in the 2nd round.

So by the way I read the year-by-year the answer to my original question would be 1987-88.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

You guys earned the win last night but we kind of helped by giving you 2 PP's that you scored on. I thought we played flat in the 2nd but you kept the D tight in front of your net in the 3rd denying us the goals we could have had.

You guys helped all weekend. Nothing like playing pond shinny. We'll take the six points, thank you very much.

Technically, that was the first round, true, with 9 teams then, but would be equivalent to the 2nd round now since there are 11 teams. Glad I could help.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Uh, where was that during the last 5 months? Not quite as dominating of a performance, actually kind of the opposite, but I'll take it.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

That wasn't "Michigan Hockey" style but **** I will take the 6 points any day of the week.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Congrats on your sweep.
How about one small favor, sweep Ferris next week as well, deal?
