Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

I never thought I'd live long enough to see the Wolverines hockey program be the doormat of the CCHA. Is it more than just goaltending. With their recruiting momentum and the pipeline down the street to the USA Hockey Development Program, I thought they's jst ekkp rollin' when Mel Pearson decided to leave. I love Red, but I have to wonder if a change of coaches is timely. I wouldn't want to force him to retire, but I wouldn't ant the program to stay in the dumper too many seasons. What is the rumor mill saying?

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

While I'm understandably happy with the outcome of the season series -- and the way the series has gone as often than not in the last 8 seasons -- I think it's unfortunate that this is the last time these two teams are scheduled to meet in a regular season game. Notre Dame and Michigan should probably be competing in whatever sports they can. Who knows what will happen in the coming seasons. Both teams will have a few extra non-conference slots to fill, but from what I know, nothing is on the board.

Until proven otherwise, only a fool would think your season is anything other than the inevitable blip on the radar. And only the same fool would be completely shocked if a B1G title happens next season. Good luck the rest of the way, and to all the great UM posters here I say farewell. For now anyway.

I think that Notre Dame and Michigan have some chilly relations right now, with the way that your Ath Dept terminated the football series at the last possible moment, without a face-to-face, so that Notre Dame would get the last home game. I would bet that Michigan teams are under an advisement to schedule ND only when necessary, at the moment.

I wouldn't say Michigan is the doormat of the CCHA, I think that under Red, for many years Michigan has always reloaded and been a strong contender every season with the exception of this season.
It's been so long since Michigan has had a genuine off year in hockey that you guys don't know quite how to deal with it and are in shock which is understandable.
Just take it in stride as best you can and good or bad stand by your team.
Ticket sales are strong for the Saturday game down here against us on the 23rd and we may have 10,000+ seats sold.

Sold or given away? Don't they just give hockey tickets away at the Kroger in attempts to make the arena look full? If sold, that's great to see hockey getting some support down there.

I'm not sure how I feel about the upcoming series with the *****eyes. Until now, all our B1G games have been against Sparty, so people showing records of B1G and how the conference standings would be shows Michigan doing pretty well. If only we could play all our games against State. Wait, no, I don't actually want that.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

I think this team needs a week off more than anything.

Just avoid the sweep next weekend and I'll be happy. Can you believe what this season has brought me to? Preseason expectations of winning the CCHA & Playoffs and making a run in the tournament to cheering for splits with the likes of OHIO and being happy about ties.

Just end the suffering already. If I didn't meet Denard this past weekend I may have shot someone from how depressing it was with basketball, hockey and lacrosse all going down.

The one thing we can still do even in our worst season in over 25 years is whip state's *** so there's that, I guess.

Sold. lol! We know that in hockey Sparty is your main rival but you have to admit when Ohio State and Michigan play each other it doesn't have to be football to feel all the love out there on the ice!
OSU fans always enjoy a rivalry with Michigan no matter what the sport and have usually sold well for hockey when you guys come to town.
We still hold the NCAA attendance record for a regular season indoor on campus game with a 17,500 sellout against Michigan in the inaugural season of our arena.
Hope a lot of Wolverines make it down in two weeks to help make it a fun series.

No, not the doormat... yet. We hope to not finish last this season. As for the past- it doesn't carry much weight now. But, going 22 years in a row to the NCAA tourney is pretty special. Only winning two titles during that time still gnaws at Red, but the fact is, after this season, some humility should set in to the program and its fans.

The future isn't dull- it just has some question marks. The talent coming in will have to contribute right away, and the talent that is carried over will have to improve: physically, mentally and emotionally. The biggest hole is between the pipes- still. It is no secret that the staff is seeking a late goaltending addition to the next class. Rutledge has been a complete flop and Racine/Janny are sufficient back-ups at best. If Merrill and Trouba return, the blue line should see some stability. (Moffie is graduating and is their only loss back there right now.) Bennett is the best of the rest, with Clare, Chiasson and Serville all struggling this season. Szuma wouldn't normally see the ice, either. There will be a couple of freshmen coming in that will challenge for time.

The forwards lack size and tenacity. Yes, there are a ton of low scoring grinders (T Lynch, DeBlois, Hyman, Selman, Sinelli, Copp etc.)but for the most part, this team lacks a nasty edge on the wings. Treais, Rohrkemper, Kevin Lynch and Sparks graduate, with Treais and Lynch the only impact players. Treais has all but disappeared since the holidays and Lynch has been steady with the occasional knucklehead penalty.

DiGiuseppe, Moffatt, Guptill and Nieves will be counted on heavily next season up front. I don't know if any of these are a flight risk yet. (Moffatt has been a complete dud) Incoming freshmen will again have to contribute offensively. Even this talent should win more than 13-15 games, but, like this season has shown, anything is possible. Probably the worst season under Red since his first three seasons (1984-87).

Here's another poster who does not think Red is in danger of losing his job.

I posted a long thread over on Rivals, but the essense of the probem is twofold, yet can be summed up in one word- personel.

Most people think that we've had great defenses over the 22 years, when, in fact, most of them were good enough. Where the D really shined was the ability for the offense to keep the puck out of the zone. Combine that with some rather odd passing problems, you end up with the D being shown that they really are not that good.

Looking back through the seasons, Turco and Shields had good enough D's to cover it up, but there were instances where Blackburn and Montoya showed this weakness. Came somewhat to head in the Sauer era, but Porter managed to fix that as captain. But now, we are very shaky up front, scorers are really not finsihing chances, and the D is being asked to play more of a system that doesn't fit the players we have.

And with hockey such a mental game, particularly with goalies- this weakness has burnt Rutledge pretty badly. I think he's still talneted, but the team is struggling to find a fix.

That being said- Red has shown that the system can work really well. And I think it still can. A better question is if the system is still relevant for NHL prospects. And that's a question that I can't answer- since I don't watch the NHL much.

The season sucks, but it happens.

Is it over yet????

BTW, a reminder for whoever starts next seasons thread, put an icon in the title so everyone can locate it quickly. I'm not starting next years thread, I did this year and look what happened. I'll never start another season thread for as long as I live (well, maybe I should start one for sparty every year?).

Wow................I hadto go deepp (page 3) to find this thread...........................have you guys given up on this season? How much of your problems have been goal tending?

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

A bye-week and a horrible season will do that. FYI, we gave up on the season a long time ago. We still support the team though. I will always love Blue Ice!

Hey, the way I look at it, we gave up zero goals against this weekend! Hooray!

Well, I guess that happens when you are on a bye week.

Given up? Not until March.

Goaltending has been a good deal of the issue, but here is a better examination from our local student rag:

I think it goes back much further than that, to the point in time where nd was invited to join the Big 10.
They said "No thank you" then signed that huge broadcast deal with NBC.
They wanted the broadcast revenue all to themselves without giving nor taking shared revenue.
Bo said it correctly then: "To HELL with notre dame!"
It's been chilly ever since.
