Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Agreed, unfortunately I don't think he will get anywhere near that much time in real games, but I do also agree with jsr, he can skate and hopefully he will continue to get better enough to be top 4 soon.

Like Red Berenson once said..."I can teach a kid how to play hockey, but i can't teach him how to skate". Let's hope Mel can develop him.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Obviously some of you know much more than I do about the inner workings of Tech hockey. A kid comes straight out of high school to DI and plays in all of 6 games and somehow it's decided that he needs to work on his maturity and hockey sense? How is it possible to even assess those characteristics at this point???

Aren't you aware that we're all experts on the internet?

I agree with oldish....the kid was an elite high school defenseman that was a standout at Muskegon's tryout and would have made the USHL team with room to spare. He was expected to be a work in progress at the D1 level. I don't think we saw enough of him to be voting him off the island this early. I do agree that he'll need to play quite a bit this year to keep a scholarship, but I'll be surprised if he doesn't come back bigger, stronger and faster. Let's not forget that he was a true freshman and much younger than most other players.

Scholarships are guaranteed year to year...no guarantee anyone gets to keep it for next season...

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

That was true in the Russell years. Pearson's policy may differ.
I don't think the actual wording of the contract can change. Pearson may have a personal policy to honor scholarship offers throughout the 4 years, but I doubt that there is anything binding about it.

Scholarships at one time by NCAA definition were one year contracts, renewable year to year. That has recently changed and many of the larger Div 1 schools are offering four years guaranteed now. Personal policy can always vary.

That's what i thought as well. I would definitely think that's the case for the full ride guys.

According to College Hockey, Inc., scholarships can be full or partial, are made any where for 1-5 years and almost always renew. Seems like the 2011 ruling really changed the landscape in that scholarships are now more difficult to reduce or not renew from year to year once granted. I wasn't aware of that change.

the legislation allows scholarships to be guaranteed for up to 5 years, no guarantee thats how Michigan Tech is doing it. It might be something of an advantage to get recruits to commit to a minimum over the course of their career, who knows how they are handling it...thats really an area of college hockey that is talked about very little...

I don't think anybody is voting him off the island just yet. just wondering what was the big hurry to bring him in straight outta high school when he clearly wasn't ready?? Was Mel afraid he might not to be able to recruit/land him after a year or two in juniors? That being said, i trust what Mel is doing and hope he can develop into a solid D-man.

The problem was Fillion not being able to play until 2nd Semester (maybe) and Labrecque choosing to change his mind and go to Clarkson instead of Michigan Tech after Russell resigned...

Is it just one island or an island chain? Can he be moved from the main island to a smaller one? Or is he on a smaller island already and hoping to move up to the main island instead of being pushed down to a smaller island or maybe its just and isle?
