Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

I'm a little surprised they haven't had a few more recruits on the blue line in the first couple of recruiting classes. Lots of forwards. Competition for playing time will be tough, as it should be.

Because the D wasn't all that talentless, it just lacked coaching and decent depth for competition and injuries. Just look at Brad Stebner progressing from the kind of average, hulking defenseman that Russell liked, to chipping in offensively and having the best +/- on the team in Pearson's first year. Some of that is development from his freshman season, but a lot of it is also coaching.

Stebner should be a solid #1, stay-at-home defenseman for this team for the next 2 years. I know I didn't expect that a year ago.

edit: I know I posted it a while ago, and Fade commented on it, but to remind everyone, Brad Stebner was +12 last year, and +15 in WCHA games.

The spirit shirts suck this year. Clearly they voted against anything witty this time around, lest it embarrass the Institution. Anyone who buys one of these is a moron.

If you think these are bad, you've forgotten last year. These are a triumph of art and humor in comparison. And these aren't for sale, they're for the freebies to hand out at games.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

and Im saying who cares, he doesn't appear to be very useful as he currently is, hopefully the offseason helped. Maybe it ends up like Schepke did, so what. Should we continue to give him some portion of a scholarship to ride the pine or should we let him go develop even if it means he goes elsewhere?

He'll be top four his junior and senior seasons; it'd be foolish to let him go.

Freebie or not that are bad. Only one with any hope is Huskies Gameday

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

we'll see but I don't see him top 6 this year or top 4 next year...
Neither do I. Next year I see him behind Fillion, Sova, Hyland, Stebner and Sweeney, and that's not even taking into account any Freshmen that jump up to grab playing time.

I think McPherson has a chance at top 4 by Davis' senior season...

he's a better skater than sova, stebner and sweeney
he's much bigger than fillion
hyland i'll judge after seeing him play
davis has all the tools; he shouldve went juniors but this year will be another year to get more comfortable, he'll have another off season to work out and I'll stand by my prediction.

I'll chime in for Davis, too. I think Davis was shell-shocked when he first hit D1 ice and had a tough time adjusting. I think his main problem was confidence and I agree he had the skills to do more than he did. However, I'd bet both he and Mel have a pretty specific program for his development over the summer and Davis knows exactly what he needs to do to earn ice time. As Mel's first pick, you can bet Mel will give him a chance this year to show if he's progressed. From what I understand, Davis is a pretty mature and motivated kid who's probably taking the offseason seriously. Unless he's thrown in the towel, I expect him to vie seriously for a third line D position this year, as it's essentially his last chance. If he rides the pine all this season, I'd look for him to go D3 for his Jr. year.

they're losing their top two this year and will have six returning defenseman including davis. there would be no point in leaving when he will have his best opportunity. if tech wants to improve, they need to develop guys like davis who have the skills and skating to make difference; he needs experience so hopefully pearson finds a way to provide him some. injuries can also have a way of providing guys with opportunities that weren't planned for.

totally agree. no way is Davis a top 4 guy next year. healthy scratch again this year.

you forgot one important tool. hockey sense. of which he has very little.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

He needs to PLAY at least half the games this year to have a chance at top 4 next year.

Agreed, unfortunately I don't think he will get anywhere near that much time in real games, but I do also agree with jsr, he can skate and hopefully he will continue to get better enough to be top 4 soon.
