Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

It looks like flooding is underway, but the right camera is all messed up so you can only see half the arena

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Anyone know much about this Michael Neville kid that tweeted today that he committed to Tech? Twitter profile says he's playing for Lincoln/USHL, but he wasn't there last year, and hockeydb says he played in the OJHL the last 3 years.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

I'm curious what people think of Tech's goalie options for 2012/13.

Between Copley and Phillips, I think Phillips looks the strongest. He had a really good run in the BCHL where he was among the league's elite goalies, earning him a ranking by NHL Central Scouting and getting him drafted.

Copley seems like a solid USHL netminder who played for weaker teams, but still posted fairly good numbers. However, he didn't stand out among other elite goalies the way Phillips did. One can debate whether the USHL and BCHL have parity, but for goalies, I think the difference is minimal.

The question in my mind is whether Genoe can keep the #1 spot against Phillips. Genoe and Robinson appeared very similar to me until last year, when Robinson seemed to really develop. I never got a good sense of whether Genoe was progressing after Pearson stopped playing him.

If I had to guess, I'd pick Phillips to play most of the games this year after a short shaking out period in which the pecking order will be established.

See http://www.lincolnstarsblog.com/2012/07/congrats-to-michael-neville.html

Appears to be a mid-level OJHL player who made the World Junior team for Canada East, then really lit up the Lincoln Stars USHL tryout camp this June and made the team as a walk-on. Seems like more of a playmaker than a scorer.

Looks like he'll be playing for Lincoln this year and hoping to head to Houghton for 2013.

Oddly enough, Eliteprospects shows him committed to Brown....maybe a typo.

Played for last year's Canada East squad at U18s, and helped them win the silver. Otherwise, average looking numbers for a guy who spent a lot of time on the St. Michael's Buzzer's top PP unit, but this article describes him as "an influential leader".

I'm the author of the blog article linked above.

Came out of nowhere at Lincoln's tryout camp and performed very, very well. Two-way forward. Wasn't afraid to throw his body around, but had good, soft hands around the net. His play had scouts sitting near me "ooing" and "aahing." Committed to Brown a few years ago, but then decommitted last year.

Excited to see him in Lincoln next season. I believe he was the captain on his St. Mike's OJHL team last season.

Hard to say how much Genoe improved last year after having a year of Shields coaching, but I expect all of them to be pretty close with Genoe getting the early nod and the others getting playing time as the season goes along, especially if Genoe falters. Good problem to have if you're Mel.

To me this is a great example of finding guys during the summer and guys who are kind of under the radar. There's a lot of players that develop a little slower but who have good potential, Add this to Mel's ability to develop players and this could be a good find. Glad to see we are starting to get the next classes filled up.

WOW flooding and paint, faster then I thought. Will have to check it this weekend.

It sure did happen fast. I checked this morning around 8 30 and not much was happening.

It's not just developing slower, it's just missing the player. Catching a bad game, seeing him in system that does not work. If the pros in any sport can miss players like Pavel and Zetterberg till later rounds, Tom Brady, Tony Romo (not drafted) how do you expect colleges with limited recruiting budgets to find them. In my opinion there are many players out there capable, question is whether the staff can develop them, and are they happy where they are at.

7:30 and icing the paint down while I type. Does they ice look clearer or an optical illusion?

Well said, and looks clearer to me too.

Datsyuk and Zetterberg are bad examples. Detroit found teenaged Datsyuk playing Dyanmo League hockey in some Siberian shithole in the late 90s, before other teams spent a lot of time and money scouring every corner of Europe for talent, and back when Detroit was still loathed in some NHL circles simply for importing "commies" in the first place. I doubt he would be missed by 29 other teams today.

Better examples from the terrible 1999 Entry Draft would be Ryan Malone, Ryan Miller, and Radim Vrbata. They all waited until at least the 4th round to get the call - in fact, Vrbata (who played in the OHL) didn't go until the 7th.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

I think they'll probably just air the championship game and that's it, which is what they've been doing for a couple of years now.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Ran into Jamie in Houghton today. He looked great, tanned, fit and rested. Excited about the upcoming season. Classy dude all the way!
