Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Sorry for the double post.
It seems to me that we have not seen anywhere near what the coach intends just yet. I think his definition of up tempo is much more so than what we saw last year and to me this might mean that the type of recruit we get is noticeably different from what we have been used to. I think guys like eick will be more the norm. I think we will see a lot of potential skill guys who can skate like the wind.

I agree with this. Pearson did great things with last year's squad, considering that many of them were groomed for a different style of play. I suspect that he is at least another year away from implementing everything he envisions.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Where do you all think Tech can finish this year in the last year of the mighty WCHA.

A: Top 3
B: Top 5
C: Home Ice
D: Bottom Half

I think the team is targeting a top 5 finish.
Goaltending will be key especially early in the season.
I am looking forward to seeing how good the the team can be this year.

I see Tech finishing in the top 5 this year. Maybe I have rose colored glasses on, but I see a few things in Tech's favor:

Last year's team was deep in mid-level offensive talent with 8 players in the scoring race...only two left and three are coming in that will probably be in the scoring race this year (Khaira, Petan, Gould).
Last year's returning scorers are likely to improve on their numbers, particularly B. Pietila, Gordic and the Johnstones....someone might really catch fire.
Defense will be more mature than last year with three strong lines....I think Stebner has really developed as well.
The new goalies are big, solid guys who looked good in Jr A, and Phillips is our first drafted goalie since Weninger. With Shields in charge, I think they'll really develop.
Schedule is a bit harder, but I think some of the tougher programs have lost key players and won't be quite as daunting.
Mel and the coaches have their systems in place know the players better.

Also, with Florek and Gron gone, I expect that we'll sweep Northern, which will be a big boost.

As scary as the thought is, I am going with "C" because this season is the 20TH ANNIVERSARY of Tech's last post season home ice (1992-93) when yours truely was but an ignorant MTU frosh that expected MTU hockey to host playoffs every season... No time like this year to break that streak.

too hot and summery to even think hockey. NOT! BLC membership check in the mail and season tickets ordered!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Remember the olden days when some of us wanted Tech to hire Pearson and others wanted Cary Eades? that was fun.

Pearson was obviously the correct choice, but I don't think Eades would have been a bad choice. I still think he'd make a helluva NCAA head coach. Just because Pearson has been a success up until this point, doesn't mean that Eades also wouldn't have been a success.

puzzling why UND let him go; they obviously weren't happy about something.

I can see top 5:

Yep!

Yepper!! - and hard, fast ice to skate on.

Oh I know. I would have been elated to get Eades myself, although Mel was my first choice of the two. I wasn't saying it would've been a failure, but just reminiscing about all the uncertainty we had to deal with back then.
And who was it who told us that getting either one was a "pipe dream"? I forgot to rub it in.

Michigan Tech has apparently offered Notre Dame (Green Bay) defenseman Luke Davison a scholarship
He's also had visits to UMD, NMU according to twitter.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

I think definitely has home ice potential. The biggest question will be in goal. Can Genoe get it done? Can the freshmen step up and win some games for the Huskies?

He'd be quite a catch. A high USHL draft that was invited to the USNDTP tryouts. Looks like Wisconsin's also interested in him, as his brother is committed there.
It might be hard to keep him away from the Badgers, particularly if his brother makes the team. Eaves likes to recruit WI boys.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Depends - with his visits to smaller schools, maybe he's looking for a chance to play big minutes early on. He describes himself as more of a defensive defenseman who takes care of his own end first (in contrast to his brother, who is more of a scorer), while scouts say he hits and skates well, and has a good 'hockey IQ'.
