Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Interesting. I was told by Flag Guy that it was $35 total for the MN @ Tech series. Unless he's eating the cost, or we're getting a special deal, I dunno.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Biggest change is that SRO will only be sold once the reserved seating is sold out.
I guess I'm cool with it as long as the extra funds are going to pay for our trip to UAH when they become members of the WCHA. Hint Hint.
I think the University also needs to be careful about pricing families out of the building. Now $60 for tickets for a family of four and that "crazy high" $5 for parking as well. Add in four hot dogs and four sodas and I'm sure you're closing in on $100. At that price level families won't be attending every night. Unless you can plan on 2000 students attending, I think you want to count on your typical community fan to attend about 40-50% of the games if you want to pack the Mac on a regular basis.

Another nice jesture would be to make the four sections at the corners of the rink $10 per seat and make them "family sections" on the "adult side" of the ice. Hook 'em when they're young and they will want to still attend when they have a choice in what they can do on a Fri and Sat night.

The pricing structure is what it is. The only way Tech will get families to commit to spending that kind of money is by putting a winning product on the ice. What the administration has to focus on is making home hockey games THE athletic event of the week to students, whether they are lucky enough to snag the Experience Tech tickets, or are willing to pay to see at least one game regardless.

It all hangs on Pearson & Co. building a winner.

Holy crap, the Detroit media even remembers that he took the Tech job? Slow news day... :p

Though of course, the lack of research is clear, since it was Russell who originally sewed up Kharia. Whether or not Pearson made him stick with us rather than head to the Everett Silvertips is just speculation.

Not to mention, who's to say whether Red would have gotten 4 years had Mel been sniffing around the door?

Winning always changes everything.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Where do you all think Tech can finish this year in the last year of the mighty WCHA.

A: Top 3
B: Top 5
C: Home Ice
D: Bottom Half

I think the team is targeting a top 5 finish.
Goaltending will be key especially early in the season.
I am looking forward to seeing how good the the team can be this year.

Can? Well in that case, I never doubt Tech's ability to finish in the bottom half.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Last year, the team aimed high and did better than anyone expected. I have no reason to think they won't set the bar high again, but I'm seeing another .500-ish finish (give or take a few games), unless one of the goalies really emerges. Here's why:

1. Other than a single home series with UAA, I don't see any "easy" () games on the schedule this year, whereas last year we opened with AIC and played a floundering Anchorage team four times.

2. The 2012-2013 schedule will give them a good test right away - h/h with LSSU, home for MN, @DU, home for UNO. LSSU still has their all-world goalie, the Gophers will be the Gophers, and Denver and Omaha should be in the home ice hunt. If we hope to join that hunt, I think Tech has to show it by going 5-3 or at least 4-4 in this stretch. I know that teams get hot in the second half, but in terms of Tech's confidence in meeting their goals, they're going to have to do some winning right out of the gate.

3. I also believe that Olson graduating is a big loss, and with the influx of young talent, I feel this is a younger and less mature team than last season. Whereas last summer I felt great about Brett as captain and Jordan as his assistant, this year I'm not so sure about our leadership, so I have to trust the players for now. Hopefully Carl proves to be the right guy for the 'C'.

Overall, I think one of the last two home ice spots is achievable, but it remains to be seen if Tech can get there.

Robo had a hell of a year, I think he gets a lot of credit for the season. A finish like last year I believe is realistic, maybe a step up for a home playoff series. Otherwise:

WINNING!!!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Sorry for the double post.
It seems to me that we have not seen anywhere near what the coach intends just yet. I think his definition of up tempo is much more so than what we saw last year and to me this might mean that the type of recruit we get is noticeably different from what we have been used to. I think guys like eick will be more the norm. I think we will see a lot of potential skill guys who can skate like the wind.
I also think that this type of game will put so much pressure on the defense that there will be some crooked numbers on the board.

Also most recruits are pretty close to the same as they come out of the ushl. so I think the staffs ability to develop players will play a huge role going forward, and guys we though of as average will turn out to be well above. Witness the playoffs vs denver last year. There was really nothing to choose from between the two teams even though denver certainly had the edge in the traditional view talent wise. So while I agree with fade, the first part of the season is critical, I think the second half will be a lot more interesting and I think we will surprise people all year.

It should all be interesting, but "surprise people" not sure about that.
