MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

So if I have this correct, the WCHA, by unanimous vote of it's member institutions, attempted to pull a greasy deal and poach Miami and Notre Dame from the CCHA. Now the other half of that unanimous vote is upset because their greasy deal got greased by a greasier deal, right?
Its very hard to compare poaching from another conference to abandoning conference members for your own gains. Im sure the smaller wcha schools were voting in attempts to appease the big boys.

Sir, does this mean that Ann-Margete isn't coming??

I have no clue what you're talking about, so here's Phil Collins in a sombrero.

Its from the movie "Full Metal Jacket". It's right after the Vietcong launch the Tet offensive. Earlier Joker and the cameraman were assigned to cover the USO tour of Ann-Margaret.

I hope Tech - way like yesterday - sent someone to Grand Forks to pick up the trophy.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

Thankfully we have Mel Pearson giving his input on the future direction of Michigan Tech hockey. I can't say I would of been too happy with our current braintrust making decisions without his input. Not slamming those who make decisions, but I think we certainly needed an outside winner to give guidance. This situation is ugly from most if not all angles, but what may come out of it is Tech holding the keys to the future kingdom and driving the WCHA(lite). This week of terror was coming for some time, at least Pearson is at the wheel directing us out of the storm.

I am assuming the trophy won't be coming back to Houghton until after next seasons end.

That is not quite correct, though it could be interpreted that way. I don't think the schools involved is accurate and I don't think the WCHA asked anyone to join though they did say membership had opened to schools that might show interest. Who showed interest is an open question, but these two is inaccurate regardless of the MO.

The Alaska Anchorage AD state the the WCHA voted unanimously to extend invitations to Miami and Notre Dame. Here's the quote from UAA AD Steve Cobb in the Anchorage Daily News and a link to the article.

"At our meeting in April we voted to extend an invitation to Miami and Notre Dame," Cobb said, referring to a pair of CCHA teams. "That passed with 100 percent of the vote. Nobody said they were unhappy. We left the April meeting and basically some of them contacted Notre Dame and Miami and said, 'Don't take the WCHA invitation, we're going to invite you to join our super league.'

"I blame everybody for being less than honest with their own league members. It's a really sneaky back-door deal."

So pulling a back door deal on a member of your own conference is bad, but doing it to another conference is perfectly acceptable? And let's face it, any time you hear anyone mention the "best interests of college hockey," they are full of back end bovine byproduct. Right now it's every school and every conference for themselves. You can bet if there isn't a merger of the remaining WCHA and CCHA teams, that more poaching will occur, possibly involving schools like NMU, Fairbanks, Mercyhurst, Robert Morris, Niagara, etc. We could still see some more moves.

“I don't know what these five schools are gaining by leaving the WCHA. What is better for them in a new league?” McLeod told the Duluth News Tribune Friday. “From a common sense standpoint, I don't know why you would want to do this. Why would they want to give up good conference relationships that they've formed?

“I haven't heard from any one of the schools about why they're leaving. With Minnesota and Wisconsin leaving, you can't be what you were as a league, but we would've still had a good, solid league. I just wish people would've stopped, taken a deep breath, taken a step back and thought about what they were giving up. What was the rush? These (five) teams can't blame WCHA (inefficiency) for their actions. This is in their lap. The WCHA has a good track record.”

Extending an invitation to someone to join your league isn't what I would consider a backdoor deal. It appears they were very open about it.

How does it appear that way? Did McLeod call the CCHA office before the vote and give them a heads up? That's as likely as North Dakota calling Tech before jumping. ANd Miami and Notre Dame to seem to be any more honorable here than North Dakota and Denver.

If recent events are any indication, McLeod probably wasn't even aware the WCHA was considering adding schools from the CCHA.
